Stand up against the Senate Transportation Bill | Outdoor Gear and ...

Posted by Jim Darroch on 07, February 2012 with

Last week I wrote about the House of Representatives? Energy and Infrastructure Act and the threats it poses to crucial funding for cycling infrastructure and trails programs. This week it?s the Senate?s turn to vote on the Senate Transportation Bill and the call for action is stronger than ever.

The Kennebec River Rail Trail in Augusta, Maine is a great example of what's at risk if the Senate Transportation Bill passes.

Why is Eastern Mountain Sports getting involved with politics?

Because we love to bike, hike and walk as much as you do and it pains us to think of a future where our nation?s roadways aren?t safe for human-powered transportation, recreational trails are expendable and children who live beyond bus routes have no one looking out for them. With rumors of $5/gallon gasoline firing up again, we need to be PLANNING the future of alternative transportation, not cutting it.

That?s why Eastern Mountain Sports is getting involved in the process of shaping the Transportation Bill and we?re glad to say that we?re not alone. Last week more than 60 organizations from across the country (including the American Hiking Society, the Rails to Trails Conservancy, America?s State Parks, American Heart Association, Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, and the International Mountain Bike Association)?pledged their support to the Petri Ammendment that sought to restore crucial funding to the House?s Bill. Unfortunately, that Amendment failed by two vote which intensifies the need to make our voices heard by the Senate.

How can you get involved?

Find your Senator?s contact information and let him or her know that you believe that funding spent on trails, bike lanes, and safety infrastructure is an investment in our nation?s physical heath and economic future. More people on bikes and sidewalks means fewer cars on the road, less pollution and less congestion. As someone who likes to bike, hike or walk you know the importance of getting off your butt and making things happen. This is one time where your actions will benefit?not only yourself, but the entire country.

Thanks for reading and look for more updates about this important bill here and on our Facebook page.
