Fast forward to 2004, and I found myself in the United States! I joined a gym and tried to find somewhere that I could take some mat work classes. Easier said than done. It became apparent to me that much of what was being taught in gyms and fitness centers was a far cry from what I had learned from my past instructors. No corrections, very little reference to how to correctly engage the core and on proper alignment.
I began my training to become certified in mat work and Standing Pilates through the PhysicalMind Institute in 2010. I was determined to continually improve my knowledge and teaching ability ? not only for my benefit, but for the benefit of my students who pay good money to learn Pilates. Many of my students are seniors and I continue to educate myself about working with this population and addressing their needs on issues such as osteoporosis and arthritis.
Any internet search on how to become a Pilates Instructor will yield a wide variety of results. Quality programs, such as those offered by the PhysicalMind Institute are interspersed with those offered online and via home study. I believe that there is a place for home study and online study but I firmly believe that nothing can compare with the invaluable learning experience given by working professionals at a studio. I am very glad that whilst PhysicalMind Institute offers online study programs, there is also a studio portion.
Just because you may feel like your personal practice is very good, does not mean that you can teach someone else. For me it was invaluable to practice teach with others, to look closely at other bodies and to be able to get that invaluable hands on experience whilst learning.
For example, in my own practice, dealing with a senior population, I need to know contraindications for those who may have osteoporosis. I need to have been properly educated to know that an exercises such as rolling like a ball, open leg rocker, jack-knife, boomerang and seal to name a few are all unsuitable for this client. Sure, I could find this information out if I looked it up online, but I am thankful for my training from the PhysicalMind Institute that I had proper information given to me on why these exercises are unsuitable and how to modify and offer alternative exercises to these clients. It frightens me that one could get an online certification and potentially cause injury to someone unintentionally through lack of education.
Of course, continuing education in Pilates is also extremely important. Once you become certified in Pilates, it is important to continually review what you have learnt. Can you remember everything you were taught two years ago if you did not refresh your memory on it? It is also crucial to remain up to date with the latest findings and research. This is not only going to enhance your own professional knowledge but it is also going to benefit your clients in terms of what you can share with them and teach them. Don?t forget that with the wealth of information now available to consumers via the internet, our clients are more educated than ever themselves and will be able to spot someone who is not trained properly.
Whilst the principals of Pilates are the same today as they were during Joseph Pilates? day, there are some very knowledgeable minds in today?s Pilates world that it is good to learn from. Today?s Pilates clients have much different issues with their bodies today than a hundred years ago which is why we need to continually educate ourselves on how best to help them.
Education does not end when you receive your certification ? I believe that then, it only begins. Continuing to learn is invaluable and there are so many opportunities out there it is our duty as professionals to take full advantage to learn from the wealth of information out there.

Supermassive black holes are cannibals, new research suggests
Astronomers have found black holes and supermassive black holes. But the discovery of a mid-size black hole could support the idea that supermassive black holes grow by eating others.
In a galaxy 290 million light-years away, a cosmic fugitive has emerged from hiding, bearing clues about how galaxies and the supermassive black holes at their centers evolve.

For three years, an international team of astronomers has had the elusive black hole under surveillance. The researchers now say they've found the strongest candidate yet for the mid-sized black hole, which may have been at the core of a dwarf galaxy that collided with a larger galaxy less than 200 million years ago.
If the analysis holds up, it would strengthen the notion that the black holes at the center of galaxies grow through collisions and mergers involving their host galaxies, just as the galaxies themselves are thought to grow. In the case of the fugitive, dubbed ESO 243-49 HLX-1, it's expected to eventually merge with the supermassive black hole at the center of its host galaxy.
A black hole is an object with gravity so strong that nothing can escape its grip, even when traveling at the speed of light. Astronomers have found convincing evidence that black holes, which form from the collapse of individual stars, exist. They've also found convincing evidence that supermassive black holes exist in the hearts of galaxies.
But questions remain about whether?intermediate-mass black holes exist, let alone about how they formed, notes Mathieu Servillat, an astrophysicist and member of the team reporting the results in the journal Astrophysical Review Letters.
Although the team has been studying HLX-1 as if it were an intermediate-mass black hole, astronomers have yet to agree on any candidate as the real deal. In the past eight years, two other groups have each identified a candidate. But the evidence for each failed to convince other researchers.
?If intermediate black holes exist, they would have an impact at different stages of the evolution of the universe,? says?Dr. Servillat, a researcher at France's National Center for Space Studies. ?At the very beginning, you have to form intermediate-mass black holes. Is this a giant star that is collapsing? Is this a number of stellar-mass black holes accumulating to become an intermediate black hole??
For now, the team's work may shed light on how a midsized black hole contributes to the growth of a supermassive black hole.
HLX-1 was discovered in 2009 by Sean Farrell, a researcher at the University of Sydney in Australia, and leader of the team reporting these latest results. It betrayed its presence through x-ray emissions that were extraordinarily bright. The emissions come from heating of dust and gas as it spirals in toward the black hole's point of no return.
HLX-1 was too bright to be a black hole formed from the collapse of a single star. The best match between what Dr. Farrell observed and theorists' models of black-hole behavior suggested a black hole with about 20,000 times the mass of the sun. Stellar black holes are thought to range from three to 80 solar masses. Supermassive black holes range from 1 million to more than 1 billion solar masses.
In addition, over the three years the team has monitored the object, it has brightened and dimmed roughly once a year. This suggests that a star may be swinging around the black hole in an elliptical orbit, losing matter to the black hole with each closest approach and causing it to flare.

California Seismologist Testifies against Scientists in Italy Quake Manslaughter Trial
The courthouse in L?Aquila, Italy, on February 15 hosted a highly anticipated hearing in the trial of six seismologists and one government official indicted for manslaughter over their reassurances to the public ahead of a deadly earthquake in 2009 (see?"Scientists face trial over earthquake deaths" and "Scientists on trial: At fault?"). During the hearing, the former head of the Italian Department of Civil Protection turned from key witness into defendant, and a seismologist from California criticized Italy?s top earthquake experts.
All those indicted took part in a meeting held in L?Aquila on March 30, 2009, during which they were asked to assess the risk of a major earthquake in view of the many shocks that had hit the city in the previous months. After the meeting, Bernardo De Bernardinis, deputy head of the Department of Civil Protection, said to the press: "The scientific community tells me there is no danger because there is an ongoing discharge of energy," a statement that most seismologists consider to be scientifically incorrect. On April 6, 2009, a magnitude-6.3 quake hit the city, killing 309 people. De Bernardinis and the six members of the scientific panel have been indicted for manslaughter because their false reassurances prompted many people not to evacuate.
Guido Bertolaso, former head of the Department of Civil Protection and De Bernardinis?s direct superior, had not been indicted and was originally expected to appear as a witness. But a few weeks ago a?wiretap revealed?that he had apparently set up the meeting to convey a reassuring message, regardless of the scientists' opinion. He also seemed to be the source of the "discharge of energy" statement. He thus found himself under investigation and, at the beginning of the hearing, he was officially notified that he too may soon be formally indicted for manslaughter.
Bertolaso was asked by the prosecutor to explain that telephone conversation. He defended himself by saying that by defining the meeting as a "media move," he was not trying to downplay risks but rather to put some order into the contradictory information that was reaching the citizens in those days. In particular, he referred to Giampaolo Giuliani?a laboratory technician and amateur seismologist who was alarming the population with claims that a major shock was coming?and to a newspaper article that had misquoted some Civil Protection experts and stated that the shocks would soon be over. The meeting, he said, was meant to make clear that both were wrong and that no deterministic prediction could be made.
As for the idea that the smaller tremors reduce the risk by releasing energy, Bertolaso insisted that he had heard it from scientists at the Italian National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), and that he had used the same phrase in the past without being corrected by any of his seismology consultants. Enzo Boschi, former INGV president and one of the defendants, has denied this. The issue will be clarified when Boschi takes the stand.
The hearing also included some true scientific debate when Lalliana Mualchin, former chief seismologist for the Department of Transportation in California, testified as an expert witness for the prosecution. In 2010, when news about the indictment broke, Mualchin was among the few experts who openly criticized?and refused to sign?a letter supporting the indicted seismologists signed by about 5,000 international scientists.

The Lost Subject: Personal Finance | Enemy of Debt: Where ...
The latest report from the Federal Reserve shows that consumers are still using their credit cards in a big way; revolving credit, which is made up primarily of credit card debt rose to $801.0 billion. It?s obvious the cycle continues as millions of Americans rack up debt and make financial mistakes.
Achieving financial success is a goal for many of us, but unlike learning to do fractions, geography, and English literature we aren?t given the tools necessary for success in school. Instead, we are forced to learn from our mistakes and often after it is too late. Since most of us never received a formal personal financial education and (coincidently) most of us have experienced financial troubles at some point in our lives, our education begins instead when we hit rock bottom and are forced to seek debt help and take a crash course in personal finance.
Trial & Error
A subject I am very passionate about is teaching our future generations the importance of personal finance education. By making good financial choices early on in our adult lives our preparedness for our future will be so much greater and rock bottom won?t ever become an issue.
If you are like me you earned your financial grades from trial and error. By making financial mistakes in early adulthood, I learned that there was a better way to purchase a coveted item (NOT with a credit card), a better way to budget (spend less than you earn) and a better way to save for my future (actually saving moneyJ ).
Think back to your high school graduation and subsequent college years. You most likely started working a part-time job, didn?t save a penny, and maybe even opened up your first credit card. (I did all three.) When your small income wasn?t enough to put gas in the car, pay for books, pizza and get that new outfit, you opted to charge it?not realizing the consequences. The bill came, you couldn?t pay it, so the credit card company added a fee and raised your interest rate. That innocent outfit went from costing you $50 to $350 and so it begins?the vicious cycle of debt. Without having the necessary financial education you made some bad choices, choices that may still be affecting your finances today.
Early Intervention
If only we would have known the basics of personal finance from the beginning. Our schools do a pretty good job of letting students know the dangers of drugs and teen sex, but not the dangers of debt. Imagine if you were warned about the evils of credit card misuse or the consequences of not establishing a budget? Do you think you may have thought twice before taking out a car loan, or opening a credit card? Do you think you would have rented the chic apartment that was $300 more a month than you could really afford?
For some spending money is like a drug?it gives you a rush a feeling of power; I can buy this my friends will be jealous, I don?t have to wait I can have it now. If we teach our children about some of the emotions associated with spending perhaps we could prevent the early money mistakes they make when they venture out on their own.
No one tells students the dangers of debt and how it can affect your entire life. The debate rages on as to whether or not it?s the schools job to provide financial education to our younger generations but the good news is that in some states the battle is being won.
In the meantime as parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends we can do our future generation a favor and share personal financial lessons that will last a lifetime.
Personal Financial Education 101
While we wait for someone to make a change to financial education in schools we can take a few minutes to teach our future generations some basic financial principles. These 7 tips will help you get the conversation started. Be sure to add your own personal experiences with each tip.
- Determine your goals. Have them ask the question, ?What do you really want to do and how much money do you think you need to do it.?
- Set up a realistic budget. After you have them determine their goals help them figure out what they will need to achieve them. Be sure to have them budget for everyday, monthly and annual expenses. To help you show how to set up a budget check out this resource guide.
- Set up your emergency fund. Stress the importance of having at least six months of bills set aside; every little bit helps and having this fund can help prevent a total financial disaster.
- Pay off debt. Pay off credit cards and other high interest debt asap. Hopefully you can instill the importance of using credit wisely and not relying on credit.
- Check your credit. Have them find out where they stand with the credit reporting agencies. Many young people are shocked to find they are turned down for a loan and don?t understand how credit scores are calculated?a valuable lesson of cause and effect.
- Saving is a financial cornerstone. Teach savings strategies early and often, Use automation, a piggy bank whatever makes them comfortable.
- Foster an entrepreneurial spirit. With unemployment stats today, relying solely on your employer for income can be a devastating financial mistake for today?s youth. Teach that starting a business or getting a side job, can keep you afloat in times of unemployment. Not to mention bolster your savings!
We may have made mistakes, we may still be making them out of habit, but our younger generations don?t have to. Make a commitment to share you personal finance knowledge with someone?make a difference!

Texas Congressmen Press NASA for Documents on Shuttle Display Venues (ContributorNetwork)
According to the Houston Chronicle, a group of Texas congressmen are still unhappy the Obama administration snubbed the home of the Johnson Spaceflight Center when it came to displaying a space shuttle orbiter.
The congressmen, led by Pete Olson, are demanding answers.
Why are the Texas congressmen unhappy?
The problem started in April, when NASA Administrator Charles Bolden announced the selection of the final resting places of the space shuttle orbiter fleet. Discovery went to the Smithsonian in Washington. Atlantis went to Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Endeavour went to the California Space Center. Enterprise, the drop test article that was never launched into space, went to the Intrepid Air and Space Museum in New York.
Houston, where the control center of all American space flights has resided since 1965, was snubbed, according to Texas politicians. Space Center Houston had planned to display a space shuttle orbiter next to the Saturn V, with a climate controlled enclosure.
A NASA Inspector General Report that failed to find undue political influence has not assuaged the outrage of Texans. Bolden changed the criteria for displaying a shuttle from the principle one being a historical relationship with the shuttle program to the location being a high-traffic area for tourists.
The New York Relocation
To add fuel to the fire, in September, New York officials decided to change the venue for the display of the Enterprise. Instead of an enclosure at a pier next to the Intrepid Air and Space Museum, Enterprise would be parked in a building to be built in a parking lot across the West Side Highway from the Intrepid on 12th Avenue. This move had the Texans crying bait and switch.
What do the Texas congressmen want?
The Texas congressmen are demanding documents. Along with members from Utah, Mississippi and Ohio, the congressmen want the Intrepid Museum's original design proposal, the minutes of a meeting that took place in April in which various display plans were discussed, and a report whether moving Enterprise to New York would cause damage to the shuttle's structure.
NASA's official position is it has no plans to re-evaluate the decision to display Enterprise in New York. NASA maintains New York's decision to display the shuttle across the highway from the Intrepid Museum is in compliance with obligations to the space agency.

Italian borrowing costs ease (AP)
MILAN ? Italy saw its borrowing costs drop as it raised nearly euro6 billion ($7.8 billion) in bonds Tuesday.
In a sign that market pressure is continuing to ease on Italian debt, the country paid rates of 3.41 percent on euro4 billion in three-year bonds, down from 4.8 percent a month earlier. The sale was 1.4 times oversubscribed.
The country has seen its borrowing costs ease in recent weeks, after yields on benchmark 10-year bonds were pushed to the perilous 7 percent level last year. The Italian government has been trying to regain investor confidence by cutting public spending and reforming a sluggish economy.
Italy also sold euro1.9 billion in bonds maturing in November 2015 and February 2017, well within the range offered.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Even as he greets China's vice president in the Oval Office on Tuesday, President Barack Obama is quietly overhauling U.S. economic policy toward Beijing, looking for new ways to extract results on issues such as market access and currency manipulation that have bedeviled him and his predecessors.
Obama's need to boost U.S. exports and show he can be firm with China, and his simultaneous hopes for a smooth start with Vice President Xi Jinping, who is due to become China's leader in 13 months, illustrate the conflicting tugs on Washington's China policy.
Making the calculus even more complicated, Xi arrives in the middle of a U.S. election year, in which Obama's dealings with Beijing are a popular punching bag for Republican presidential candidates aiming to challenge the Democratic incumbent.
Xi is getting the full Washington tour: visits to the State Department, Pentagon and Capitol Hill, as well as meetings with U.S. and Chinese business leaders.
But he won't be offered the complete red-carpet treatment. For all his power within the Chinese system, Xi is still for now No. 2, leader-in-waiting behind outgoing President Hu Jintao.
Obama's aides say the visit will produce few, if any, formal agreements. Rather they expect the president and Xi to size one another up. There will be firm talk from Obama on U.S. gripes, and perhaps from Xi as well.

Its trade and currency policies are blamed for job losses in the U.S. manufacturing sector that hit important election battleground states such as Ohio especially hard. Beating up on Beijing is an easy way for candidates from both parties to score political points.
Obama knows that, and he set the stage for tough talk at the Asia-Pacific summit in Hawaii in November, telling China to act like a "grown-up" by reforming trade and currency practices viewed as detrimental to the U.S. economy.
U.S. leverage over Beijing is limited, since China holds hundreds of billions of dollars of U.S. debt.
Still, the policy review, described by an official who recently left the Obama administration, is aimed at finding new ways of getting results on limits to U.S. market access, China's use of state-owned corporations, the valuation of its yuan currency, which U.S. officials see as artificially low, and related issues.
In his State of the Union address last month, Obama announced a new enforcement unit that will investigate unfair trade practices. China will likely be a major target.
Republicans do not see a lot that is working. Mitt Romney, the apparent front-runner in the race for the Republican presidential nomination, has said Obama is not being tough enough. He promised to label China a currency manipulator - something the Obama administration has declined to do.
In a speech to technology executives on Friday, Romney slammed China's "autocratic model" of capitalism, and said that China's rise could ultimately threaten U.S. freedom.
Such criticism has gained traction on the campaign trail.
"China is just a drop in the bucket in terms of things the Obama administration is doing wrong," said Chrystalline Lauryl, 35, who was attending a conservative conference in Washington where the Republican candidates were speaking.
"There's friendly and there's buttering up," she said with regard to China policy. Obama, she said, was doing the latter.
The president's political advisers are aware that Xi's visit could trigger more attacks on the president's record, and they are ready with a string of comebacks about Romney's own record on the subject.
They point out, for example, that in his book "No Apology" Romney criticized Obama for being protectionist after putting tariffs on Chinese tires, while as a presidential candidate Romney said he would apply tariffs to goods after declaring the country a currency manipulator.
"That just gives us another opportunity to talk about a flip flop," a senior Obama campaign official said.
CALCULUS
Obama may not address Romney's critiques directly while Xi is in Washington, but the pressure of the election will influence his positioning.
"The way that China's been broached in the Republican primaries has been one of the things that has contributed to Obama having to take a tougher public stance on some of the China economic issues in particular," said Andrew Small, a China expert at the German Marshall Fund, who said U.S. officials would still be cognizant of China's sensitivity to protocol.
"For this trip itself, the calculus will probably net out in favor of laying on a good show for him," he said.
One senior administration official said the protocol would be appropriate to Xi's current position as vice president.
Making Xi's visit smooth is also important to Obama, who has an interest in establishing good relations with the man expected to lead the world's second-largest economy and most populous nation for the next 10 years.
"The hope of this administration is that (Obama is) going to be returned to power for another four years, and they want to establish a rapport between these two individuals," said Bonnie Glaser, a China expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Pomp and circumstance aside, the White House has signaled in advance it will not shy away from touchy subjects, many of which are important to U.S. voters.
Biden, who traveled to China to meet with Xi in August, called the country's one-child policy "God-awful" earlier this week and later met with a group of human rights advocates.
"We consider it an important visit - make no mistake -- because the relationship is important and his role as the future leader is important, so we're not going to in any way seek to diminish that importance because it's an election year," White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
"But we're also going to be pretty candid, as we have been in the past, about where we have differences."
