Canadians overwhelmingly believe in climate change

Regina, August 15, 2012 Only two per cent of Canadians believe climate change is not occurring, a new important survey released today by IPAC-CO2 Research Inc. concluded.

The survey comes on the heels of Alberta Premier Alison Redford's recent push for a National Energy Strategy, which would address the future of Canada's oil and gas industries, and its approach to carbon management.

"Our survey indicates that Canadians from coast to coast overwhelmingly believe climate change is real and is occurring, at least in part due to human activity" explained Dr. Carmen Dybwad, CEO of the environmental non-government organization. "These findings have been consistent from 2011 and 2012. Canadians care about issues like extreme weather, drought and climate change."

Opinions about the cause of climate change and how to combat it are, however, sharply divided among the provinces and by region.

"Canadians most commonly (54%) believe that climate change is occurring partially due to human activity and partially due to natural climate variation," said Briana Brownell of Insightrix Research, who conducted the survey for IPAC-CO2.

"Residents of Quebec (44 %), Atlantic Canada (34%) and British Columbia (32 %) are more likely to believe climate change is occurring due to human activity than those on the Prairies (Alberta and Saskatchewan 21 %, Manitoba 24 %)."

Canadians are also divided on what they believe should be the priorities to fight climate change.

A total of 35% of Canadians believe the priority should be to promote cleaner cars running on electricity or low-carbon fuels while only 13% favored a tax on carbon dioxide emissions from the whole economy. Support for a carbon tax is lowest in B.C. (6%) and highest in Quebec (24%).

A key solution cited by Canadians is Carbon Capture and Storage, or CCS, which involves capturing carbon dioxide from an industrial source of greenhouse gases, transporting it, and storing it deep in the Earth's subsurface.

A majority of Canadians agree that capturing and storing carbon dioxide should be compulsory when building a new coal (59%) or natural gas (57%) power plant, though Canadians are concerned about the risks associated with CCS.

Quebec residents (71%) would be the most concerned if carbon dioxide was stored underground within 1.5 kilometres to 3 kilometres from their home, while Saskatchewan residents (43%) were the least worried.

Residents of B.C. (60%) are most likely to believe that the storage of carbon dioxide represents a safety risk in the future. Again, Saskatchewan residents (48%) are significantly less likely to hold this belief.

"CCS is not the "magic bullet" solution to combat climate change, but the development of CCS technology represents a necessary step in reducing Canada's emissions," said Dr. Dybwad.

For a second consecutive year, IPAC-CO2 contracted Insightrix Research, Inc. to conduct an online survey of Canadian residents. Survey responses were collected from 1,550 Canadians between May 29 and June 11.

The percentage of Canadians who are unsure whether or not they would benefit from CCS has increased notably from 42% in 2011 to 48% in 2012.

Residents of Ontario are more likely to believe that it would (33%) benefit them, while in Quebec the reverse is true, where 30% believe they would not benefit from the technology.

The proportion of Canadians who are unsure of the effectiveness of carbon capture and storage has increased notably from one quarter (24%) in 2011 to one third (35%) in 2012.

Despite the concerns many Canadians have about the technology, Dr. Dybwad remained optimistic about the future of CCS and its impact on Canada's environment.

"Canadians are concerned about the risks and benefits involved with CCS, but IPAC-CO2 exists to ensure that carbon dioxide is stored safely and permanently in the ground by providing risk and performance assessments of carbon dioxide storage projects."

Video: Palace on damage control after Harry parties in Vegas

>>> a lot of internet users this week have gotten a glimpse of what you might call the softer side of british royal families , specifically prince harry as we've never seen him before on vacation in vegas but in this case it didn't stay in vegas. the prince, who, let's remember, is a young, single man with a military background and a better than average benefits package, was playing nude billiards with a young woman and that's not a euphemism. but because of the customs governing british media for the most part the pictures haven't been displayed back home yet. our report tonight from nbc's stephanie gosk.

>> reporter: a prince with a well known penchant for trouble in a city notorious for creating it. did anyone really think harry in las vegas wasn't going to create a few headlines? it started with an innocent pool side party but got a lot racier. the now famous photos were secretly taken late at night in his hotel room probably on a cell phone . it had been going so well for the royal family -- the wedding, the diamond jubilee , the olympics. but before the glow of the torch could fade a royal scandal. prince harry just wanted some fun but it's not that simple for the man third in line to the throne.

>> you are a member of the royal family whether you like it or not you carry certain responsibilities. in addition, he also represents the british army .

>> reporter: back at home now the military helicopter pilot who may soon be deployed to afghanistan could get a reprimand from his commanders. but on the streets of london today --

>> i think it's really cool.

>> yeah. he's funny.

>> just having a good time.

>> having a good time with his mates. why not.

>> reporter: do you think people are making too big a deal about it?

>> yeah. people are too stuffy. he should be able to do what he wants.

>> reporter: even with some popular support the palace has gone on damage control. the pictures they say are an invasion of privacy. with the phone hacking scandal at the news of the world paper still unraveling the british media have shown uncharacteristic restraint. the photos were not in today's british press, not in the papers or on tv. "the sun" printed this slightly strange recreation on its front page . late today the paper said it would have the actual photo tomorrow. it all leads to a burning question on people's minds here, why didn't harry's security detail take cameras away from his guests?

>> it's not up to the protection officer or the body guard to worry or be concerned about the private antics of their charge but you are responsible for the security. in this case nothing happened to him.

>> no physical harm, that is, but prince harry may want to keep his next vacation a bit more under wraps. stephanie gosk, nbc news, london.

Univison scores forums with Obama, Romney

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Univision won't get the presidential debate it wanted, but President Obama and Mitt Romney have agreed to "Meet the Candidate" forums hosted by the network and Facebook, in which they will address issues important to Latino voters.

After the presidential debate moderators were announced August 15, Univision president and CEO Randy Falco criticized the lack of a Hispanic moderator, telling the Commission on Presidential Debates that Hispanics "do not have a voice in the debates."

He suggested another debate hosted by Univision's own Jorge Ramos or Maria Elena Salinas, co-anchors of "Noticiero Univision."

That isn't happening. But the candidates have agreed to appear separately, Univision said, with Ramos and Salinas moderating.

The events, held in front of a live audience, will focus on education and the future of the Hispanic community. Univision will engage audiences on Facebook ahead of time at the Univision Noticias Facebook page.

Facebook's election hub, the U.S. Politics on Facebook page, will also highlight the events.

Details of the events will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

Tips on scoring home loan finance - Finance, Advice

South African single women account for approximately 9 percent of residential property buying while single men account for 8 percent, says FNB.

Clinton Martle, sales strategist at FNB Home Loans explains that although they do not have gender specific statistics on home loan applications, they are able to reveal that 9 percent of home buyers are single women, 8 percent single men with the balance made up of couples.

Clinton Martle, sales strategist at FNB Home Loans, explains that although they do not have gender specific statistics on home loan applications, they are able to reveal that 9 percent of home buyers are single women, 8 percent single men with the balance made up of couples.

Martle emphasises the point that whether men or women, all home loan applications are assessed on merit of income and security.

He says this is largely driven on the back of combined incomes affording more suitable larger type homes.

?By combining incomes, would-be buyers are able to buy properties better suited to their needs.?

Factors such as net disposable income and existing debt exposure coupled with living expenses all play a part in securing finance, he says.

Martle points out that since the implementation of the National Credit Act living expenses have become important aspects of assessing credit and often joint incomes are required to offset living expenses.

?Deposit requirements are also not driven on the back of gender and rather on the dynamics of the application assessed,? he says.

Factors such as supply and demand, upkeep and maintenance, credit profile and payment history are factors that will drive deposit requirements.

In the past two weeks, we have looked at ways of saving money and not relying on a man, and we also looked at ways of taking control of our money.

Now that these plans are firmly in place, it?s probably time to think about buying a home instead of renting one, provided you can afford it of course.

Low interest rates?are making it easier for home buyers to enter the property market and banks have are also reportedly loosening their purse strings.

However, there are some reasons why banks reject home loan applications and Martle provides an easy guideline on what to do to prepare for that big purchase ? your dream home.

He explains that the Property Leader program assists would-be buyers with the buying process upfront by pre-qualifying buyers and removing the uncertainty of ?how much can I afford? or ?I hope they approve the amount I need?

While this article is mainly aimed at women (it being Women?s Month), home buying and home loan applications apply to anyone wanting to buy and own property.

Tips on scoring a home loan

1. Keep the amount of debt or short term spending commitments to a minimum

Clothing accounts, personal loans, overdrafts, credit cards and vehicle finance can erode the amount you could qualify for and it would be best to limit these, says Martle.

Having a credit facility available but not closing it still means that the credit is available and this would need to be considered when the person is applying for a home loan.

It is best to cancel or close unnecessary accounts if not being used.

Do not merely accept the annual limit increases on store accounts or credit cards due to being a good client as they can detract from the home loan amount you qualify for, he says.

2. Pay your monthly accounts on the due date

Try not to skip payments from month to month.

If an account is due on the 25th of the month, do not pay the account late as this will affect your credit rating, pay on time always.

If the minimum amount required is R500 pay the amount in full, not R300 or less as this will also reflect as part payment and detract from your overall credit score.

3. Watch out for the number of credit checks done on your profile

Martle says while it is important to shop around and make sure one is getting the best deal upfront, make sure you are aware of the number of credit checks done on your profile.

It is important to shop around for the most suitable property in your price range and don?t be pressured into buying ?just outside? of what you feel you can afford.

This indicates a need for credit and detracts from your overall credit score.

4. Avoid standing surety for others? debt commitments

As far as possible avoid standing surety for others debt commitments as this is considered when raising finance on your side and will affect the amount you qualify for.

5. You salary and credit scoring

Pay your salary into an account monthly to build up a credit score with your bank.

Try not to use everything all the time and run your account on the minimum balance monthly.

This too is an indication that cash flow is tight and extra expenses could be a problem, he says.

5. Don?t overdraw your cheque account

Constant overdrawing of your account shows insufficient cash flow, which could raise the question about how you plan on servicing new debt if you can?t manage what is already there.

6. Open a savings account

Having a savings account is a good thing as it shows there is extra money available every month to use and also indicates a prudent savings habit.

7. Save for a deposit

Try to save up for a deposit of 5 percent (more is always a plus) before shopping for a home, he says.

It is a good indication that there is commitment to the asset and a responsible approach to buying a home.

8. Additional home costs savings

Make allowance for the additional costs of registration and all the fees linked to buying a home.

Depending on the purchase price the fees can be as much as 8 percent of the purchase price and this excludes the deposit on the property.

9. Shop around

It is important to shop around for the most suitable property in your price range and don?t be pressured into buying ?just outside? of what you feel you can afford.

Martle explains that whether one is buying an existing property or a new development, the deposit requirements will be determined by the applicant?s individual credit assessment and not only the property they are buying.

Stick to what?s affordable to you.

10. Employment

Being in stable employment and not ?job hopping? helps establish credibility and indicates stability.

11. Property location

Make sure the area you are considering is well maintained and an area where the demand to live in is good.

Drive around and look at the other properties in the area. Maintenance and upkeep of their properties is also important when trying to sell again.

Work with reputable agents and agencies. They are successful for a reason.

Do not only look at the home you want to buy, look at the safety aspects of the area, the amenities available, such as shopping centres, schools, hospitals, etc.

Resale must always be a consideration and things like this add value to the area.

Deposit and home loan application requirements

One of the frequently asked question is how much deposit can one expect to pay when applying for a home loan of say a property priced at R500k.

Martle explains that whether one is buying an existing property or a new development, the deposit requirements will be determined by the?applicant's individual credit assessment and not only the property they are buying.

Factors that influence deposit requirements include the maintenance and upkeep of the property, supply and demand in the area they are looking to buy into and the would-be buyer?s credit history and profile.

He says once one has gone through all the steps above and feels confident of buying that dream home - it is time to approach the bank for financing.

If an account is due on the 25th of the month, do not pay the account late as this will affect your credit rating - pay on time always.

Information required, however, varies but the basic requirements include:

- latest proof of income

- copy of ID

- proof of residence

- a completed application form

- an offer to purchase

?This does vary from one applicant to another depending on the individual circumstances.?

Martle points out that while this seems like a simple exercise, no two home loan applications are the same - the factors considered when assessing an application for finance are specific to the applicant.

It is best to get the advice from the specialists in the industry and it is?because of this that FNB Home Loans has recognised the fact that buying a property can be an intimidating process.

?From the time one decides to 'shop' until the loan applied for has been approved, can be a stressful period.

?It is because of this that we have introduced a first to the industry in the form of Property Leader.?

He explains that the Property Leader program assists would-be buyers with the buying process upfront by pre-qualifying buyers and removing the uncertainty of ?how much can I afford? or ?I hope they approve the amount I need?

Do not only look at the home you want to buy, look at the safety aspects of the area, the amenities available, such as shopping centres, schools, hospitals, etc.

By going through the property leader program, FNB will issue an upfront certificate giving the applicant peace of mind knowing that the finance is largely secured, albeit subject to conditions such as the valuers? assessment of the property one decides to buy, he says.

He says the shopping experience once you know that the finance is already largely taken care of, is so much more meaningful.

?We recognise the emotional roller coaster that applicants go through when looking for their dream home and we are able to help ease the load by removing some of the obstacles upfront.?

Over and above the upfront certificate, FNB also offers the applicant a network of recognised area specialists? -?estate agents?who can help buyers shop for the house they are looking for.

?We educate would-be buyers about the home buying process to remove any concerns they may have about the financing of the properties.?

The bank also supplies in-depth information about the areas they are looking to purchase into in the form of area reports.

Area reports contain information such as the demographics of the area, average house prices, sizes of the erven, soil conditions, sales that have been registered in the area, points of interest and much more.

These are all available through the Property Leader program designed to assist with the buying and selling process, he adds. ? Denise Mhlanga

South Korea to return Japan s protest letter

South Korea: South Korea said Thursday it would return a protest letter from Japan's prime minister without answering it, amid a bitter row over disputed islands in the Sea of Japan (East Sea).

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's letter will be returned because it could be used by Tokyo to strengthen its territorial claim over the islands, the foreign ministry said.
The letter addressed to South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak has been kept at the South's embassy in Japan.

"Our embassy in Japan will contact the Japanese side today to return Prime Minister Noda's letter," said ministry spokesman Cho Tai-Young.

Relations have sharply worsened since Lee paid a surprise visit on August 10 to the Seoul-controlled islands known as Dokdo in Korean and Takeshima in Japan.

He said his trip, the first by a South Korean president, was intended to press Japan to settle grievances left over from its colonial rule over Korea from 1910-45.

Lee further angered Japan by saying later that Emperor Akihito would have to sincerely apologise for past excesses should he wish to visit South Korea.

Noda in his letter expressed regret at the islands visit and at Lee's remarks on Akihito, Yonhap news agency said.

The visit infuriated Japan, which recalled its ambassador from Seoul. Tokyo also cancelled a finance ministers' meeting scheduled for this month and said it would review a foreign exchange swap agreement with Seoul.

South Korea has rejected Japan's proposal that the two countries ask the International Court of Justice to settle the dispute.

Antarctic ice sheet quakes shed light on ice movement and earthquakes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Analysis of small, repeating earthquakes in an Antarctic ice sheet may not only lead to an understanding of glacial movement, but may also shed light on stick slip earthquakes like those on the San Andreas fault or in Haiti, according to Penn State geoscientists.

"No one has ever seen anything with such regularity," said Lucas K. Zoet, recent Penn State Ph. D. recipient, now a postdoctoral fellow at Iowa State University. "An earthquake every 25 minutes for a year."

The researchers looked at seismic activity recorded during the Transantarctic Mountains Seismic Experiment from 2002 to 2003 on the David Glacier in Antarctica, coupled with data from the Global Seismic Network station Vanda. They found that the local earthquakes on the David Glacier, about 20,000 identified, were predominantly the same and occurred every 25 minutes give or take five minutes.

The researchers note in the current Nature Geoscience that, "The remarkable similarity of the waveforms ? indicates that they share the same source location and source mechanisms." They suggest that "the same subglacial asperity repeatedly ruptures in response to steady loading from the overlying ice, which is modulated by stress from the tide at the glacier front."

"Our leading idea is that part of the bedrock is poking through the ductile till layer beneath the glacier," said Zoet.

The researchers have determined that the asperity -- or hill -- is about a half mile in diameter.

The glacier, passing over the hill, creates a stick slip situation much like that on the San Andreas fault. The ice sticks on the hill and stress gradually builds until the energy behind the obstruction is high enough to move the ice forward. The ice moves in a step-by-step manner rather than smoothly.

But motion toward the sea is not the only thing acting on the ice streaming from David glacier. Like most glaciers near oceans, the edge of the ice floats out over the water and the floating ice is subject to the action of tides.

"When the tide comes in it pushes back on the ice, making the time between slips slightly longer," said Sridhar Anandakrishnan, professor of geoscience. "When the tide goes out, the time between slips decreases."

However, the researchers note that the tides are acting at the ground line, a long way from the location of the asperity and therefore the effects that shorten or lengthen the stick slip cycle are delayed.

"This was something we didn't expect to see," said Richard B. Alley, Evan Pugh Professor of Geosciences. "Seeing it is making us reevaluate the basics."

He also noted that these glacial earthquakes, besides helping glaciologists understand the way ice moves, can provide a simple model for the stick slip earthquakes that occur between landmasses.

"We have not completely explained how ice sheets flow unless we can reproduce this effect," said Alley. "We can use this as a probe and look into the physics so we better understand how glaciers move."

Before 2002, this area of the David glacier flowed smoothly, but then for nearly a year the 20-minute earthquake intervals occurred and then stopped. Something occurred at the base of the ice to start and then stop these earthquakes.

"The best idea we have is that during those 300 days, a dirty patch of ice was in contact with the mount, changing the way stress was transferred," said Zoet. "The glacier is experiencing earthquakes again, although at a different rate. It would be nice to study that."

Unfortunately, the seismographic instruments that were on the glacier in 2002 no longer exist, and information is coming from only one source at the moment.

I?ve been thinking about love and relationships? for a while.? In this next set of blogs I will talk about:

* How the process of love works in the beginning of our relationships,

*? How we get side tracked in our relationships (fall out of love), and most ? ? ? ? importantly,

* We find (create) love in our relationships,

I often hear girlfriends and boyfriends, wives and husbands say I?ve ?fallen out of love with him / her? or ?I love him / her, but I?m not in love with him / her.? Many folks say this because they don?t understand about how love really works.? In the beginning we meet some one and there is something about them and we fall in love with them. We believe from movies, books, television that love is something you feel and that?s how it works;? we have that ?loving feeling?. In both my professional and personal experience I have found that love works very differently from what we have been taught.? There are three factors that influence us to connect with a person in the beginning of our relationship which I will cover next under the heading of ? How the Process of ?Love? works in the beginning of our relationships?.

?

How the Process of ?Love? works in the beginning of our relationships

?

Part one of this process is that in the beginning of a relationship we find someone who we are attracted to and that grows to a physical sexual connection; part two,?of this relationship is that there is a certain social pressure to be ?coupled? for people to be together in pairs; part three, is that we don?t want to feel isolated we want to feel connected to another person.? So these three forces come together and we fall in love with someone and become a couple (this refers to both serious relationships and marriages) it is important to realize that there is a big difference between starting a relationship and being in it for the long run.

The next blog will focus on the differences between relationships in the beginning and how they unfold over time,? and how closeness and love can deteriorate.
