The Golden Years: Good Health in Mind, Body and Spirit | YCousar's ...

Beginning at age 50 (mid-life), through age 65, and beyond (the golden years) is considered to be the start of a moment in time when our work is done; and we begin to have thoughts of moving toward that long awaited lifestyle change from a that of a working stiff to that of a person of leisure; a period of time when we could stop punching that clock and enjoy the fruits of our labor. Some of us, however, who neglected our health issues along the way, are now seeing that neglect come back to haunt us. The weariness, fatigue, malaise, aches and pains are the new house guests that came to dinner and never left.

I have watched family members and friends give up on life, long before it was over. I had a brother who spent a lifetime working hard, and then when it was time to retire; he spent the last three or four years of his life sitting in a recliner watching television with a remote in one hand and a cigarette in the other. The fire had gone out long before he left and there was nothing anyone could do to turn this situation around for him. His passion for life had gone; his dreams had all dried up. I could see no trace of who he was in the eyes that had clouded over; and the heart that slowed; and the memory that faded; no sign at all, for he had left a long time ago.

As I watched him slowly fade away, I vowed that I would fight for my life with every part of my being. So I faced the question that so many of us will eventually have to face; do we pay now or do we pay later. That has always been the question but somehow now, there is a sense of urgency.

Here are a few other questions you may want to address while you?re at it.? Have you put off starting any kind of daily exercise plan? And I?m not taking about ?going to the gym? type of exercise.? A brisk walk in your neighborhood; yoga classes or dance lessons at your local community center are also excellent. Be creative but be consistent. Don?t let the only exercise you get during the day consist of pushing the buttons on your remote control.? And by the way, how was your breakfast?? You know that cup of coffee and a donut you had is not the best way to start your morning, now don?t you?

Let?s not wait to find out next year, or the year after that, that the price we must pay for our neglected health is due and payable now, and the price is more than we thought it would be.

More than ever, people over 50, both men and women, begin to regret their over indulgence in things that do not promote good health and fitness, and their neglect of those things that do, for example (1) a good healthy diet; (2) less fast foods; (3) daily exercise; and last but not least, (4) the focus of energy on a positive, spiritual path to inner strength, and a less stressful lifestyle. Now there is nothing in the rule books that say we have to be dogmatic about a healthy lifestyle change.? Rigidity in anything is not a good thing. Being easy and comfortable in the things you do will also promote a healthy balance between your mind and body.

I?m a firm believer that there is no time like the present to start fresh. Make your solemn oath to begin now taking care of your temple, the place where your spirit resides, you will not regret it.
