2-Latest_400x225

FOND DU LAC (AP) ? Prosecutors in Fond du Lac County are considering charges against a man who had 68 Siberian huskies removed from his property earlier this year.

District attorney Dan Kaminsky says the sheriff?s department recommended 226 charges. The counts would include mistreatment of animals and failure to provide food and water.

Authorities visited the man?s property in May while looking for a stray calf wandering in the area. Officers who visited the dog-breeding and hobby farm in Van Dyne reported some dead animals and dozens of others in various stages of starvation.

Kaminsky says his office is still reviewing the case.

Three dogs had to be euthanized. The rest were taken to the Fond du Lac Humane Society. Almost all have been adopted.?

Mothers travel in search for Central America migrants

Even before the tour bus comes to a stop, the women rise from their seats and wait in the aisle to exit. In their arms rest rolled-up flags of the Central American countries they come from. Large laminated photographs of missing loved ones hang by lanyards from their necks.

They descend the stairs to a gaggle of waiting press photographers. This is their moment of hope, stirring once again the possibility of putting to rest years of uncertainty and desperation.

Maybe someone has seen a missing son or father making his way to the United States in search of work. Maybe someone knows a daughter is OK.

"The goal is to come to look for them," said Virginia Olcot, 42, of Chimaltenango, Guatemala, who last heard from her husband in September 2009 when he arrived at the U.S. border in Sonora. "This is our intention: to not get tired, to persevere and get the government to help us."

It was her third trip with this caravan of women, which for six consecutive years has traveled from Central America to points all over Mexico looking for relatives who have gone missing on their way north. Even if they don't find their loved ones, at the very least they hope to bring attention to the plight of migrants who have disappeared in Mexico.

The group sponsoring the trip estimates that some 70,000 Central American migrants have disappeared in the past six years based on reports from nonprofit groups. Some of them have been found in the most brutal of circumstances: Hundreds of would-be migrants were discovered murdered in the community of San Fernando in the border state of Tamaulipas: first 72, most of them Central Americans, massacred on a farm in 2010, and nearly 200 people, some Mexicans, discovered in clandestine graves about six months later.

Deadly crossing: Death toll rises among those desperate for the American Dream

Extortion of migrants' families is common since the smuggling business has been taken over by organized crime in recent years. The Zetas cartel in particular is known for holding migrants in houses near the U.S. border and threatening that their loved ones will be killed if their families don't pay more money. Other migrants are believed to have been forced to work for the Zetas or other cartels or were killed if they refused.

This year, 38 women, mostly from Honduras, as well as El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua, will cover 2,800 miles (4,500 kilometers) and 14 Mexican states, traveling from Mexico's border with Guatemala to Reynosa, a major entry point on the Texas border to the United States.

Along the way, they stop at festivals and Catholic Masses and meet with organizations that advocate for human rights and the missing. They visit migrant shelters, show photos of their missing relatives to people who may have seen them and patiently give interviews, recounting the sad details in each new city.

It worked for Olga Marina Hernandez, 52, of Progreso, Honduras, who came last year looking for her 31-year-old son, Gabriel Salmeron Hernandez, whom she hadn't heard from since he left five years earlier.

Salmeron's girlfriend saw the photograph the mother was carrying when it was published in the local press and contacted the caravan's organizers. Within weeks of returning to Honduras, Hernandez received a call from her son, who's a recovering drug addict training to be an evangelical preacher in General Escobedo, a working-class suburb of Monterrey.

"Now I'm happy because now I'm not going to continue thinking about where he is, whether he was killed," she said.

In all, five families will be reunited on this year's caravan, adding to some 100 who have been brought back together during similar trips through Mexico over six years.

Last year, the German nonprofit organization Medico International began funding the caravan, which has allowed it to cover more ground and include a trip to the spot in San Fernando where the migrants' bodies were found. The caravan now has two buses draped with banners carrying full police escorts.

The caravans aim not only to help reunite families but also pressure governments to adjust their immigration policies, said Martha Sanchez Soler, coordinator of the Movimiento Migrante Mesoamericano, which organizes the tours.

"The war against drug trafficking, it hasn't worked and it's turned the migrants into merchandise for the organized crime," Sanchez said. "Actually, what the governments of the United States and Mexico did was to turn over the administration of the migration flows to the organized crime."

Though the mothers were from Central America, the pain of the missing has resonated with Mexicans, many of whom have also been searching for missing loved ones. Later Friday, the mothers met with families from northern Nuevo Leon state.

"We know your pain. We speak the same language," said Irma Leticia Hidalgo, a mother from a Monterrey suburb whose son was kidnapped last year. "Your missing are our missing."

Hidalgo said her 18-year-old son was taken from their home in the middle of the night by about 10 men, half of them wearing police vests from a nearby town, who went on to steal everything of value in the house. Although she paid a ransom and was told she'd have her son back in a few hours, he never returned.

She ultimately retired from her teaching job to look for him.

This year is the second caravan trip for Clementina Murcia Gonzalez, who long dreamed of traveling with her family to Mexico, but the woman from San Pedro Sula, Honduras, had a happier journey in mind.

Murcia, 68, is searching for two sons who disappeared while on their way to the United States to find work. Without the caravan's help, she wouldn't have been able to pay for the trip to Mexico, she said.

Her eldest son, Jorge Orlando Funez Murcia, was 17 when he left home in 1987. Like his father and brother, Funez was a mechanic, but couldn't make a living back home.

His mother tried to investigate his whereabouts as best she could from Honduras, eventually hearing from friends that her son was killed in a rail yard in Guadalajara. "They haven't brought me a body or anything, that's why I decided to look for him," she said.

Fifteen years later, Murcia's younger son, Almagro Orlando Funez Murcia, sneaked away without her permission. He was 23. After five years without a word he called her from southern Mexico to ask for money, which she didn't have.

The next call came from a Mexican man who said her son was at the U.S. border, but he couldn't continue without more money. Murcia asked to speak to her son, but the man said he was bathing. She told the man to have her son call back, but she never heard from him again.

After her son Gabriel Salmeron disappeared, Hernandez also received extortion calls. The last Hernandez had heard from Salmeron he was in Nuevo Laredo, and then nothing. But at one point during the five-year void, she started getting calls from someone who said they had Salmeron in Houston. She sent them $200, but they kept asking for more. They refused to put him on the phone, so she doesn't think they ever had him.

Salmeron said he didn't make it beyond Nuevo Laredo. He lost himself in drugs and wound up in Monterrey, wandering the streets looking for his next fix until he ran into members of an evangelical church that specializes in outreach to addicts. Now he's training to be a pastor.

The church's leader at first opposed the reunion between Hernandez and her son, fearing his promising young preacher would return to Honduras. But by Friday, the church had turned the reunion into a giant event. Members wore "Adictos a Cristo" (Addicted to Christ) T-shirts and inside a high-ceilinged auditorium, Christian rock thundered from a stage complete with a light show and smoke machine.

Salmeron entered with flowers for his mother. They clutched each other in a long embrace surrounded by cameras, before the son, wearing a gray suit and purple tie, launched into a sermon about his journey.

"My mother was in search of a miracle and this miracle became real," he said from the stage. Later, he said it was the happiest day of his life.

Watching the reunion of Hernandez with her son, Murcia and several other mothers wiped away tears.

"I was thinking in that moment that one day it will be my turn," Murcia said later. "It will be my turn to find him, whichever of the two."

NJIT Research Professor Reginald Farrow and NJIT Professor Gordon Thomas will be the recipients Nov. 8, 2012 in the Liberty Science Center of an Edison Patent Award from the Research & Development Council of New Jersey. The event, which kicks off the Council's 50th Anniversary celebration, will honor more than 30 inventors and 13 New Jersey companies and universities.

The award will honor a medical device invented by both professors and graduate student Sheng Liu: "No Clog Shunt Using a Compact Fluid Drag Path" (U.S. Patent 8,088,091). The device enables the implantable, wireless monitoring of both the extremely slow flow of the cerebrospinal fluid as well as tiny changes in the pressure in a ventriculo-pertoneal (VP) shunt that drains fluid out of the brain.

VP shunts are commonly used by patients suffering from severe excess pressure in the brain due to hydrocephalus or brain injury.

"We are thrilled to honor such significant and interesting patent work for the Council's 50th Anniversary," says Ian Shankland, (vice president and chief technology officer of Honeywell Specialty Materials) and chairman of the R & D Council of New Jersey. "When you think of the tremendous history that New Jersey has in innovation, dating back to Edison in the late 1800s, the Council is fairly young at 50 years, but we have accomplished a lot during this time and we are excited to celebrate this milestone."

Council President Anthony Cicatiello says, "For decades now, the Council has made it a priority to recognize the researchers from academia, industry and government laboratories that New Jersey can boast of and this year is in keeping with that tradition. Both individuals and inventors who are being honored are changing the world and we want to make sure that everyone in New Jersey recognizes the significance of their work and shares in their pride. The Patent Awards Ceremony is the Council's way of showing our appreciation and recognition of these talented individuals and the organizations that support them."

Farrow's research explores the interface between nanotechnology and biophysics and biomedical engineering. His focus is to develop a method to investigate the fundamental properties of biological cells at the nanoscale using an array of carbon nanotube probes. His goal has been to understand how cells communicate both internally and with other cells. This communication drives the individual and collective cell functions at the most basic level.

Farrow and his team have used the same carbon nanotube array platform to fabricate the world's smallest biofuel cell which may be used in the future to power in vivo versions of the nanoprobe array and other biomedical devices. Three patents have been awarded based on Farrow's research at NJIT and others are pending. Farrow was the recent recipient of NJIT's highest research award: the NJIT Overseer's Research Medal and Award.

Thomas is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) and was elected to chair the Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics (FIAP), the largest section of the APS, to chair the Nominating Committee of FIAP, and to serve on the Keithley Prize Committee of the APS. He has published over 150 papers on basic physics, applied physics and biophysics and holds or has pending over 15 patents. He has received an Edison Award for a patent on flexible sensors and the 2011 Innovator Award from the NJ Inventors' Hall of Fame for the body of his inventions and research.

Thomas has served NJIT academically as a teacher and in various committees that work to help students, and has guided five students through their doctoral work. In addition, he has trained high school students and undergraduates from New Jersey in his lab at NJIT both during the summer and the academic year. He has worked to bring a biophysics degree program to NJIT and has developed new courses in biophysics.

Thomas received his PhD in physics from the University of Rochester and has carried out research at Bell Labs, Harvard, MIT and the University of Tokyo.

Profits Will Soar Using These Online Marketing Ideas | Cop 15 Post

As long as you?re operating an online business, then you should be trying a few internet promotion techniques to bring people to your virtual doorstep. There are more ways than ever to bring in new customers and keep them engaged. This article can help you to take advantage of the many opportunities that Affiliate marketing presents.

TIP! Nothing sells quite like a product that the customer feels an attachment to, so it?s up to you to propagate that attachment. Encourage your reader to visualize their life and how much easier it would be when they use your product.

Reaching out to your customers is a way to personalize their experience, and show them you are paying attention. Have them leave a review or answer a survey a few days after purchasing.

Put words that people are going to appreciate such as ?simple? and ?easy? to put them at ease. Most people prefer products that are simple, so by using these keywords you can entice visitors to try your product. This will drum up business.

TIP! You could also bundle the merchandise with similar products and sell it at a discounted price. Make sure that the terms are stated clearly in all of your marketing literature.

When you are creating your website, you need to make it very content related and comprehensive. You need to give your customers the information they need so that they can make informed decisions about their purchases. Do not repeat yourself, fresh content is the key.

TIP! Are you searching for a way to do Internet marketing? Allow several opportunities for visitors to leave their email address and other information. This is called an opt-in feature, and it allows your visitors to sign up for free newsletters or offers in exchange for their email.

Tailor your banner ads to deviate from what people would expect a normal banner ad to look like. If you can make your banner ads look different from the norm, you will find that more people will click on it.

Web marketing will be similar to people familiar with other markets in some ways, but it also has a lot about it that?s entirely unique. As an example, the way search engines focus on title tags could be changed at any time. You may, for example, need to refocus your efforts on creating viral videos or other word-of-mouth content.

TIP! Make your advertising more personal. In advertisements, include your real name and post a photo of yourself on the website.

If you plan on having a flashy website then you need to make sure that it is easy to navigate as well. When someone comes to your website you have about five seconds to capture their attention and make them want to stay. They will leave your site if it takes any longer than that.

Viral videos can be a quick way to gain a lot of viewers. With just a little creativity and the ability to stretch your imagination, you can put together a video that spans the globe and draws a plethora of visitors. If you manage to make a viral video, it?s one of the best ways to boost sales.

TIP! Customers will order their products faster if you give them incentives to do so. This includes things like faster or free shipping, complimentary gift wrap and gift card enclosures.

Try to make people on your mailing list feel as though they are getting a thoughtful, personal email from you. Many people are weary of getting endless impersonal email messages. Consider your own experience; when was the last time you were excited to see a bulk email show up in your inbox? Targeted, personalized emails will make your business stand out from the rest.

One of the things that you can do when marketing online to encourage your visitors to buy from you is to give them discounted prices. You can display the new, discounted price right beside the regular price, or simply offer a set discount on the entire order. For quicker sales, offer the special prices and discounts for a limited time.

TIP! Facebook and Twitter are important tools to incorporate for marketing purposes. You can communicate quickly on social media websites, giving your customers messages about sales and promotions.

Offer advertising space on your site to major, credible companies to add to your own credibility and validate your business standing. Being associated with these companies increases your own credibility tenfold. This move will help you to drive traffic to your site and establish your site as a good one to go to for credible information and goods.

We have already seen how marketing through the Internet offers a way to contact new customers. It is also very useful to keep those customers engaged and connected. It helps interaction between customers and businesses that were impossible before. If you utilize the ideas and tips in the article, you will be able to connect with your customers and successfully utilize the power of Affiliate marketing.

Enough is Enough | The White Coat Investor- Investing And ...

I?m writing this post as much for my benefit as for yours.? Although the opposite malady is far more common in our society, there are some of us that are compulsive savers.? Like most things in life, there is a spectrum ranging from the spendthrift to the hoarder, and we?re all on it somewhere.? By virtue of the fact that you actually spend time on a blog like this one, you?re probably closer to the hoarder side of the equation.? Don?t feel too badly, so is the editor of this fine site.? But the diagnosis must precede successful treatment.

The Compulsive Saver

A recent post on the Bogleheads forum (a well-known internet destination for the thrifty/frugal/compulsive saver) linked to a chapter in a book called Money Madness which says this about the compulsive saver:

The compulsive saver carries the idea of thrift to an illogical extreme?saving becomes an end in itself?savings is not done for some future reward; saving is its own reward?

The compulsive saver must put a certain percentage of every paycheck in the bank before paying bills or taking care of other financial obligations?paying full price for anything is a painful experience?satisfaction from spending money does not derive satisfaction from pleasure in the item purchased but from the fact that it was purchased at substantial savings.? The obsessive preoccupation with money overshadows everything else so that the only aspect of any object or event that registers in the mind of the compulsive saver is the cost.? A show or ball game is not seen as an evening?s recreation but as the expenditure of a ten dollar bill. A vacation cannot be enjoyed as an opportunity for a change of pace and a chance to unwind and relax.? Instead it is an experience of mixed emotions, with the pleasure ultimately measured by the amount of money painfully extracted from the purse or wallet.

I?m sure a few of us can relate.? Here are two recent examples from my life that have made me wonder if I?m slipping too far toward the compulsive saver side of the spectrum.

Savings Limits Increased

I hate paying taxes.? I do my best to pay as little as legally possible.? The best way for me to lower my tax bill is to max out my retirement and similar savings accounts.? Not only do these contributions lower my tax bill, but unlike other ways to lower it, like paying mortgage interest or donating money to charity, I get both the tax break and I get to keep the money.

So I?ve tried to do that ever since I?ve been a resident, and for the most part, have been extraordinarily successful at it.? But ?the bill? seems to go up every year.? When I was in the military all I had to do was put $17K into the 401K and $5K into each of our Roths.? $27K and I was done.? I could spend the rest ?guilt-free.?? I put a little toward the kids? college, saved a bit more in a taxable account (especially in late 2008 when stocks were on sale), and paid down the mortgage a bit, but for the most part just spent or gave away the rest my income.

Since I?ve gotten out, my opportunities for tax-advantaged saving have gone through the roof.? I can put up to $50K into our 401K/profit sharing plan.? I can still do $10K a year into Roth IRAs, via the backdoor route.? This year I became eligible to use our defined benefit/cash balance plan, another $15k.? I just switched to a high deductible health insurance plan, so now I can do an HSA (stealth IRA) for another $6250.? I?m now in a state where I get a tax deduction for 529 contributions, up to $10K a year.? The grand total I need to save now in order to minimize my taxes is a whopping $92,250.? Despite my increased income in private practice, that total still represents far more than the savings rate I recommend to readers of this site (20%.)

You can imagine my dismay to recently learn that due to inflation the IRS is going to allow me to save EVEN MORE next year.? A regular 401K contribution is going up from $17K to $17.5K, IRAs are going up to $5.5K each, and a profit-sharing plan limit is going up from $50K to $51K.? Even the 529s are going to allow me a slightly bigger deduction next year.? And I?m not even 50.? If I were I?d be able to put another $1000 into each IRA and another $5500 into the profit-sharing plan.? This increase feels an awful lot like an expense or a tax bill to me right now.

Now I?ve run the numbers and I don?t need to save $100K a year toward retirement in order to meet my retirement goals.? But I find myself inching out on the spectrum toward the compulsive saver in order to take advantage of these opportunities.? In fact, there are two other good investing opportunities only available to me in a taxable account right now: buying shares in my hospital and shares of the real estate our partnership uses for our business office.? But I hate to give up a guaranteed tax break to use these opportunities, and I really don?t want to limit my spending any more.

My Recent Shopping Trip

I enjoy spending time outside enjoying hobbies.? In the last year I?ve spent significant amounts of time downhill skiing, backcountry skiing, rock climbing, mountaineering, hiking, canyoneering, mountain biking, road biking, boating, water skiing, wakeboarding, camping, disc golfing, playing ice hockey and running.? Unfortunately, I have so many hobbies I?ve never been able to afford the best gear for all of them, especially now that my kids are getting into many of them.? The more I spend on a bike the less I can spend on skis.? If I fix up the boat, I can?t buy a new rope.? So I love opportunities to get quality gear on the cheap.? We woke up early this weekend to go to a ski swap well-known for great deals on nice gear.? After a couple of hours I?d picked up two pairs of skis, bindings, and poles, a couple of jackets, some boots, an avalanche probe, and a backpack, all used and severely discounted.? In fact my wife was mad when I bought the same pack for $25 that she had just purchased for me as a $200 Christmas present.? It was nice to finally get some of the stuff I?ve been wanting to buy for a while, but I have to admit that part of the pleasure of the experience was scoring ?the deal.?? And I?ve definitely experienced a painful sensation in the past when spending money unnecessarily while eating out or on vacation.? So I think I?ve definitely got a tendency toward a compulsive savings habit.? I suspect at? least a few of you do too.

Treating The Compulsion

So here are some tips if you find yourself forgetting ?moderation in all things.?

1) Grow Income-? If you?re like me, and want to max everything out, you can still do that AND have more money to spend if you make more.? You can increase your income by working more hours, by increasing your income per hour worked by making your practice more efficient, or by developing a side income.? It?s always easier to save $50K when you make $250K than when you make $200K.

2) Stop saving once you hit your goal- Run the numbers and figure out how much you really need to save each year.? Then when you hit it, stop saving.? If you?re not sure how much you need, I suggest putting 20% of your income toward retirement.

3) Remember that all stages of life are different- There are times in your life when saving should be a priority- such as your late 30s and your 40s.? A dollar saved in your 30s is 8 times as valuable as a dollar saved in your 60s.? Other stages, like med school and residency, and in retirement, are the time to spend.? Remembering your priority for your given stage will help you make the transition to spending your money.

4) Learn to enjoy spending as well as saving- Spending money is fun.? Saving money can also be fun.? Learn to enjoy both.? You save now to spend later, not to accumulate some huge stash of cash to die with.

5) Use a credit card-? If you?re unable to save enough money, I?ve recommended you get rid of your credit cards.? Credit cards have been shown to cause you to spend more money than if you spend cash, because it is more psychologically painful to part with the green stuff.? The reverse is also true.? If it?s painful for you to spend money, use a credit card.? A compulsive saver is unlikely to get into credit card trouble, so you might as well take advantage of the convenience.

6) Let your significant other buy stuff for you-? Many couples are composed of a saver and a spender.? If it?s painful for you to spend, have your S.O. go do it for you.? Then you get to enjoy some nice stuff without having to feel the psychological pain of buying it.

Hormone boost lets mice live longer without fasting

Talk about having your cake and eating it. Fasting might not be the only route to a longer life ? a hormone seems to work just as well, for mice at least.

We know that some animals can extend their lifespan by consuming fewer calories. Engineered mice can get the same effect by simply pumping out high levels of a hormone normally produced during a fast, according to Steven Kliewer and David Mangelsdorf at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Their team found that mice engineered to make higher levels of the hormone, FGF21, increased their lifespan on average by over a third.

"What we are seeing is the benefit of caloric restriction without having to diet," he says.

Humans have the hormone too, and Kliewer believes FGF21 has the potential to extend the human "health-span" ? the time we live healthy lives.

The researchers believe FGF21 may act to prolong life by affecting pathways such as the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) pathway implicated in ageing.

"It blocks growth hormones promoting pathways which are associated with diseases, including cancers and metabolic diseases, and as a consequence these animals live longer," says Kliewer.

The results are intriguing as FGF21 is already being tried in clinical trials for treating metabolic disease, he says. "So it's potentially a pharmaceutical that will be out there and people will have access to it."

'Art of Ink Painting,' the Latest Book from Self-Taught Russian Artist Valentina Battler, Brings a Musical Sensibility to the Field of Visual Arts

Classically trained pianist applies a distinct and multi-faceted approach to ancient Chinese Ink Painting tradition

NEW YORK, Oct. 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Many have grown to appreciate and admire the works of concert pianist and now visual artist Valentina Battler. From her varied styles to the unique culminations they form, Battler displays her unique talent in her latest book, 'Art of Ink Painting'.

Synopsis:

This book presents the works of Valentina Battler, which span across a wide field of artistic culture: Fine Art, Poetry and Art Criticism. Her oeuvre attains high creative achievements in each of these spheres, and united together, it represents a significant and unique phenomenon.

"Battler explores the extent of human emotion through artistic representation of figure and form, combining Classical and Contemporary Chinese Ink Painting techniques. Her works on Xuan paper are rooted in the Yin Yang philosophy's principle of complementary contradiction, says Dr. Grant Pooke, Senior Lecturer at the University of Kent.

He continues, "Battler's background as a classically trained pianist, instructor and graduate of the St Petersburg State Conservatory is in evidence in various ways throughout the selection of images. Her aesthetic explores some of the nuanced and complex interactions between painting and music."

Her works on Yupo paper reflect an impressionistic style. Contrasting figure and fantasy with abstraction, she invites the viewers to experience the world re-interpreted through her own perspective as seen through the metaphorical 'looking glass.'

Forms and subjects are employed as representations of emotional expression; from contemplation, passion and aggression to expectation and disappointment. While subjects vary from dueling beasts and Samurai warriors to tranquil landscapes and delicate figures, these stylized and skillfully executed compositions radiate a dynamic energy through deliberate brush strokes and the softer abstract backgrounds into which the forms melt.

Dr. Pooke went on to add, "For Battler, these images 'lend themselves - technically and emotionally.' In these works, tempo and cultural influence are determined not just by the expressiveness of the subject matter but through the choice of material - whether Xuan or Yupo paper:

"Chinese painting is very classical 'music' for me - with its phrases,
articulation, accentuation, legato, staccato..., but painting on Yupo
looks like Jazz with theme and expression in it," she said.

"It is perhaps then, through the cadence and rhythms of a musical score; from fugue to caprice, from freeform jazz to fantasia. But while these images convey the impressionistic and the improvised, they also speak to a profound and deliberate cultural identity - and distinctness."

Overall, Valentina Battler's work represents how a concert pianist is expanding her work in music to encompass other art forms. Says Valentina, "It is really true -- I surprised myself. More over, the Chinese painting that I met at the top of my professional career, changed my destiny: I found 'silent music' in it and stopped playing piano, being changed playing piano to playing on Ink. I simply hear music as it is the image."

Did bacteria spark evolution of multicellular life?

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Bacteria have a bad rap as agents of disease, but scientists are increasingly discovering their many benefits, such as maintaining a healthy gut.

A new study now suggests that bacteria may also have helped kick off one of the key events in evolution: the leap from one-celled organisms to many-celled organisms, a development that eventually led to all animals, including humans.

Published this month in the inaugural edition of the new online journal eLife, the study by University of California, Berkeley, and Harvard Medical School scientists involves choanoflagellates (aka "choanos"), the closest living relatives of animals. These microscopic, one-celled organisms sport a long tail or flagellum, tentacles for grabbing food and are members of the ocean's plankton community. As our closest living relative, choanos offer critical insights into the biology of their last common ancestor with animals, a unicellular or colonial organism that lived and died over 650 million years ago.

"Choanoflagellates evolved not long before the origin of animals and may help reveal how animals first evolved," said senior author Nicole King, UC Berkeley associate professor of molecular and cell biology.

Since first starting to study choanoflagellates as a post-doc, King has been trying to figure out why some choanoflagellates live their lives as single cells, while others form colonies. After years of dead ends, King and undergraduate researcher Richard Zuzow discovered accidentally that a previously unknown species of bacteria stimulates one choanoflagellate, Salpingoeca rosetta, to form colonies. Because bacteria were abundant in the oceans when animals first evolved, the finding that bacteria influence choano colony formation means it is plausible that bacteria also helped to stimulate multicellularity in the ancestors of animals.

"I would be surprised if bacteria did not influence animal origins, since most animals rely on signals from bacteria for some part of their biology," King said. "The interaction between bacteria and choanos that we discovered is interesting for evolutionary reasons, for understanding how bacteria interact with other organisms in the oceans, and potentially for discovering mechanisms by which our commensal bacteria are signaling to us."

No one is sure why choanoflagellates form colonies, said one of the study's lead authors, UC Berkeley post-doctoral fellow Rosanna Alegado. It may be an effective way of exploiting an abundant food source: instead of individual choanoflagellates rocketing around in search of bacteria to eat, they can form an efficient bacteria-eating "Death Star" that sits in the middle of its food source and chows down.

Whatever the reasons, colonies of unicellular organisms may have led the way to more permanent multicellular conglomerations, and eventually organisms composed of different cell types specialized for specific functions.

Sequencing the choanoflagellate genome

King's 12-year search for the trigger of choanoflagellate colony development was reignited in 2005 when she started to prime cultures of the choanoflagellate S. rosetta for a genome sequencing project. The sequencing of another choanoflagellate, the one-celled Monosiga brevicollis, gave some clues into animal origins, but she needed to compare its genome to that of a colony-forming choanoflagellate.

Surprisingly, when Zuzow tried to isolate the colony-forming choanoflagellate by adding antibiotics to the culture dish to kill off residual bacteria, strange things happened, said King.

"When he treated the culture with one cocktail of antibiotics, he saw a bloom of rosette colony formation," she said, referring to the rose petal-shaped colonies that were floating in the culture media. "When he treated with a different cocktail of antibiotics, that got rid of colony formation altogether."

That "rather mundane but serendipitous observation" led Zuzow and Alegado to investigate further and discover that only one specific bacterial species in the culture was stimulating colony formation. When other bacteria outnumbered it, or when antibiotics wiped it out, colony formation stopped. Alegado identified the colony-inducing bacteria as the new species, Algoriphagus machipongonensis. While she found that other bacteria in the Algoriphagus genus can also stimulate colony formation, other bacteria like E. coli, common in the human gut, cannot.

Working with Jon Clardy of Harvard Medical School, a natural products chemist, the two labs identified a molecule -- a fatty acid combined with a lipid that they called RIF-1 -- that sits on the surface of bacteria and is the colony development cue produced by the bacteria.

"This molecule may be betraying the presence of bacteria," Alegado said. "Bacteria just sit around blebbing off little membrane bubbles, and if one of them has this molecule, the choanoflagellates all of a sudden say, 'Aha, there are some bacteria around here.'"

The signal sets off a predetermined program in the choanoflagellate that leads to cell division and the development of rosettes, she said. The molecule RIF-1 is remarkably potent; choanos detect and respond to it at densities that are about one billionth that of the lowest concentration of sugar that humans can taste in water.

"We are investigating this molecule from many sides. How and why do bacteria make it? How do choanoflagellates respond to it, and why?" King said. She and her team also are analyzing the genome of the colony-forming choanoflagellate and the colony-inducing bacteria for clues to their interaction.

King hopes that this unexpected signaling between choanoflagellates and bacteria can yield insights into other ways in which bacteria influence biology, particularly the biology of the gut.

Coauthors with King, Alegado and Clardy are Zuzow, now a graduate student at Stanford University; Laura Brown, now a faculty member at Indiana University; Shugeng Cao and Renee Dermenjian of Harvard Medical School; and Stephen Fairclough of UC Berkeley. Dermenjian is now at Merck.

Willoughby Heating Question: What is Blower Door Testing? | Apple ...

It is frustrating to pay money to operate your Willoughby heating and cooling system only to receive an underwhelming performance. The problem, though, may not lie with your heating and air conditioning systems. Your home itself may not be well sealed, allowing the air that?you?ve?paid to heat or cool to escape through cracks in your home?s envelope or window and door frames. Air stripping doors and shrink wrapping windows can help reduce the amount of energy wasted in your home, but for harder to find leaks a blower door test may be the best identification option. It can help you pinpoint leaks in your home envelope and see exactly where repairs are needed to boost efficiency and reduce energy costs.

To perform this test, a your Willoughby?heating?contractor will install the blower door, which is a powerful fan, in the frame of an external door in your home. This fan pulls air out of your house, which in turn lowers indoor air pressure. This means that the air pressure outside is higher, and that air will naturally try to force its way into your home. The points at which it is able to do this are leaky spots that can allow energy to escape your home. This test gauges the air infiltration rate of your home.

There are calibrated and uncalibrated blower doors that can be used when testing your home. While an uncalibrated blower door can detect leaks in your home, it will not be able to provide the data you need to know just how much air is escaping or how tightly sealed your home really is. The gauges on a calibrated blower door allow this data to be determined and considered when air-sealing your home.

Before you have a blower door test performed you must do a few things to prepare your home. All interior doors should be opened, and windows must be closed. Your thermostats for heaters and water heaters should be lowered, and fireplace dampers, doors and any air intakes should be closed. Because air pressure in your home is going to be adjusted during the test you may want to cover any ashes in your fireplace or wood stove with damp newspapers or towels to avoid a mess.

Once you have the information from your blower door test you?ll know everything you need to in order to heat your home more efficiently. If you?re interested in scheduling a blower door test or have any further questions about its performance or operation, call the energy efficiency experts at Apple Heating & Cooling. We have the answers you need to make the best decision for your home and energy efficiency.

U.S. Army Maj. Nidal Hasan in an undated handout photo.

By Kari Huus, NBC News

The man charged in the 2009 Fort Hood, Texas, shootings, that?killed 13 and wounded more than two dozen has been granted a stay of his court-martial proceedings to appeal a?ruling that he must appear in court clean-shaven, Fort Hood announced on Monday.

Former Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Hasan, 42, was clean-shaven when he was serving in the military. Since he has been in jail, he has grown a beard. He has said that as a Muslim shaving his beard now would be a sin, because he believes he is close to death, the Los Angeles Times reported.

If convicted of?the Nov. 5, 2009, attack, Hasan faces the death penalty or life in prison without parole.

Military court requires that defendants be clean-shaven, and the court has found Hasan to be in contempt and fined him $1,000 each time he has appeared in court with the beard.

A military appeals court in Virginia on Thursday upheld a judge?s ruling that Hasan can be forcibly shaved for the court-martial.

But on Monday, the?U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces issued another stay to accommodate an appeal. The court did not say how long the stay would remain in place.

Hasan's court-martial was initially scheduled for August.
