Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: Plastic Surgeons

New 'Miracle' Skin Healing Cream Now Available to the Public

The wait is finally over as five of the UK's leading plastic surgeons launch HEAL: a revolutionary new healing gel originally created to soothe and reduce inflammation of the skin following surgery (thereby shortening recovery times), but which has also proven to effectively treat everyday injuries such as sprains, sunburn, bruises and scars, making it the ideal medical product to have in the home for all the family to use. The innovative preparation, now available for purchase online, has been developed by The Firm, a specialist skincare group formed by some of the best-known names in plastic and cosmetic surgery including Peter Butler, Martin Kelly, Patrick Mallucci, Simon Withey and Norman Waterhouse of London Plastic Surgery Associates (LPSA). Together, they combine their specialist knowledge in skin anti-ageing, healing and nanotechnology to bring products to the public that actually work.

Each surgeon at The Firm has specific expertise in skin healing: Peter Butler carried out his experimental research on skin ageing and transplantation in the United States (Harvard). Martin Kelly has an MD in antioxidant skin therapy, Patrick Mallucci wrote a thesis on nanotechnology delivery systems and both Simon Withey and Norman Waterhouse have published widely on skin repair in plastic surgery. With a combined clinical experience of over fifty years in treating skin wounds after surgical procedures, they are well equipped to understand the healing process of the skin. In addition, The Firm drafted top French chemist Colette Haydon to perfect the formula in order to achieve the optimal effect, which offers a triple method of action: anti-inflammatory, bruise-solving and scar maturation.

According to Mr Butler, who leads the UK Facial Transplantation team and whose skincare research is internationally acclaimed;

"HEAL was created because no single product existed that combines all the elements of reducing bruising and inflammation as well as accelerating the healing process. This unique gel combines all of this and is completely different to any other 'off the shelf' products that claim to have healing effects on the skin, as they do not contain enough of the active ingredients needed to have an effect. The difference with HEAL is that the key ingredients are present in the right formulations to ensure they penetrate the skin's surface and actually have a dramatic effect on the end result".

Mr Mallucci added; "Over the last three years with the help and expertise of leading French chemist Colette Haydon we have developed HEAL which has a unique combination of active ingredients Arnica Montana and Madecassoside, for the first time ever packaged in a liposomal system, which delivers the agents to where they are needed most - to the deeper layers of the skin. The nanotechnology is designed to deliver the products of HEAL with maximum efficiency to the damaged area".

HEAL combines a triple method of action which works to soothe the closed wound - using Arnica, Haloxyl and Glistin, to reduce heat sensation and discomfort; repair the damage - using Collaxyl protein fractions to promote cellular repair and optimise scar healing with Silicone. For the past two years The Firm have tested HEAL in their clinical practice, London Plastic Surgery Associates where every year hundreds of patients have undergone facelift, rhinoplasty and breast surgery. The feedback from their patients has been overwhelming, with:

- 94% of patients reporting that HEAL was very soothing to bruised areas
- 82% of patients reporting that HEAL reduced swelling after surgery
- 85% of patients reporting that HEAL highly effectively reduced post-surgery bruising
- 97% of patients would continue to use HEAL in the future and recommend the product to others

Fiona Kent, a 37-year-old Executive Personal Assistant - who had a Rhinoplasty and Chin Augmentation last year - says;

"I was amazed at how soothing and comforting the product felt on my tender skin after my operation and it reduced bruising within days. It smells divine and has a consistency that sinks into the skin. HEAL is truly amazing and is certainly a product that I will always have in the home."

HEAL is available online at http://www.healgel.com and costs ?28 for a 30 ml jar.

Craigslist adds maps to Portland, Bay Area listings

1 day

Craigslist?has just started integrating maps into some of its listings, but instead of going with Google or Microsoft, the site?went with the crowdsourced OpenStreetMap. The changes are live right now if you're in Portland, Oregon or the San Francisco Bay Area.

Craigslist is famous for never updating its look and feel, meaning things are quick and clean if?a bit stark. But with apartment listings especially, mapping the location is such a standard action that people looking for a new place would be opening dozens of browser?tabs for Google Maps.

In fact, the process of looking at Craigslist ads by location became both so popular and so difficult that a site called PadMapper started up as a way to let people do it more easily. Craigslist actually asked them to stop in June, but clearly they also took the point that maps are now critical information for apartment searches.

But using something like Google Maps institutionally (as opposed to individually) would come with significant cost ? so Craigslist decided to use OpenStreetMap, a system that, like Wikipedia, is created from publicly available information and the?contributions of users.

The good news is that it's free. The bad news is that unlike Google and Microsoft, OpenStreetMap doesn't have millions of dollars to spend on mapping small towns and rural areas, or for checking the accuracy of existing maps. Their community is constantly revising and adding to the database, but their information simply isn't as complete as the bigger, more well-funded services.

That doesn't mean it isn't a perfectly good map of much of the world ? but it doesn't have bells and whistles like driving directions or Street View. It's certainly good enough for Craigslist's purposes, but for now the company is only rolling it out to Portland and the Bay Area, since those areas are well-mapped and have plenty of housing?listings with which?to test the service.

There's no indication of when the integrated maps will come to other areas (or perhaps be rolled out universally), but if they're well-received it seems likely they'll soon be activated for any areas Craigslist feels are represented accurately by the maps. If you're in a big, tech-savvy city like New York or Los Angeles, that will likely be soon, but for smaller towns, it could be a while. In the meantime, you can test it out by browsing housing in either of the areas currently covered.

Lunar 'hit-and-run': New research eclipses existing theories on formation of the moon

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? The Moon is believed to have formed from a collision, 4.5 billion years ago, between Earth and an impactor the size of Mars, known as "Theia." Over the past decades scientists have simulated this process and reproduced many of the properties of the Earth-Moon system; however, these simulations have also given rise to a problem known as the Lunar Paradox: the Moon appears to be made up of material that would not be expected if the current collision theory is correct.

A recent study published in Icarus proposes a new perspective on the theory in answer to the paradox.

If current theories are to be believed, analyses of the various simulations of the Earth-Theia collision predict that the Moon is mostly made up of material from Theia. However, studying materials from both Earth and the Moon, shows remarkable similarities. In fact, elements found on the Moon show identical isotopic properties to those found on Earth.

Given it is very unlikely that both Theia and Earth had identical isotopic compositions (as all other known solar system bodies, except the Moon, appear to be different) this paradox casts doubt over the dominant theory for the Moon formation. Moreover, for some elements, like Silicon, the isotopic composition is the result of internal processes, related to the size of the parent body. Given Theia was smaller than Earth, its Silicon isotope composition should have definitely been different from that of Earth's mantle.

A group of researchers from the University of Bern, Switzerland, have now made a significant breakthrough in the story of the formation of the Moon, suggesting an answer to this Lunar Paradox. They explored a different geometry of collisions than previously simulated, also considering new impacts configurations such as the so-called, "hit-and-run collisions," where a significant amount of material is lost into space on orbits unbound to Earth..

"Our model considers new impact parameters, which were never tested before. Besides the implications for the Earth-Moon system itself, the considerably higher impact velocity opens up new possibilities for the origin of the impactor and therefore also for models of terrestrial planet formation," explains lead author of the study, Andreas Reufer.

"While none of the simulations presented in their research provides a perfect match for the constraints from the actual Earth-Moon-system, several do come close," adds Alessandro Morbidelli, one of the Icarus' Editors. "This work, therefore, suggests that a future exhaustive exploration of the vast collisional parameter space may finally lead to the long-searched solution of the lunar paradox."

Hot Rod City in Performance Magazine!

Michael Dezer is a renowned New York City and Miami real estate developer and has been a collector of cool cars since the 1970s.

His collection is eclectic. He loves micro-cars from the 1950s and ?60s; he loves ?dream? cars; he loves television and motion picture cars from Hollywood; and all sorts of motorcycles and scooters, including a huge contingent of Vespa motor scooters and other Eastern European brands.

?

A Growing Collection

Dezer?s passion is collecting these ?works of art,? as he calls them, and it?s what he spends his time at when he?s not developing real estate properties.

He?s accumulated hundreds of them, along with thousands of pieces of memorabilia, many of which are on display at The Dezer Collection, a car museum in South Florida.

Over the years, Dezer not only filled, but outgrew an 18,000-square-foot museum at the Trump resort in Miami Beach. He moved to a bigger 250,000-square-foot place and outgrew that too. So now, some of it is spilling over far to the west in Las Vegas at a place called Hot Rod City.

Hot Rod City came about when, a few years back, Dezer decided to develop some real estate in Las Vegas and purchased a property in the industrial area west of I-15 just off Tropicana. It?s in the shadow of a few well-known hotels and casinos on the Las Vegas Strip, and as new developments go it had a lot of promise as a destination resort, Vegas-style, for a new museum displaying Dezer?s continually growing collection of cars and motorcycles.

Then the bottom fell out of the market.

The upside is that for the past few years, Dezer has had more time for his real passion: the occupation of car collecting. And sitting on the property already was a big industrial complex with storefront areas, office space and warehouse space.

So, to make the most of the property without razing it, Dezer contacted Steve Levesque, a Los Angeles-based classic car aficionado and collector of vintage Vespas. Levesque operates a public relations firm called Luck Media & Marketing and its Las Vegas-based spinoff, Luck Media & Motors, dealing in classic cars, motorcycles, scooters and hot rods.

Together, they came up with the concept of Hot Rod City as a showroom and museum anchoring an automotive complex?geared?toward automotive-related businesses.

?

All Things Automotive

?It?s growing steadily and becoming a synergy between tenants,? says Levesque. ?It?s like a one-stop shop for your car where you can find everything from tires to upholstery to mechanical work to a paint job. And, it?s a community of businesses that support each other.?

Additionally, Dezer has the West Coast version of his car and motorcycle collection at Hot Rod City, which includes famous television and motion picture vehicles.

It?s an interesting place to come in and see cars, and for Dezer, more convenient to sort and display the vehicles he gets from west of the Mississippi.

Vegas is a great place for this, he explains, because the city hosts several auto-related events including the Barret-Jackson Auction, the SEMA/AAPEX Shows, NASCAR racing, many other car and motorcycle auctions and ongoing events at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

?In all it?s an automotive-friendly, car collector-type of town,? says Levesque.

Ultimately, Dezer has multiple goals for Hot Rod City. One is to showcase the vehicles, most of which he believes are works of art that the public should have the opportunity to see.

But he also hopes to make the most of the property. Hot Rod City is a brand concept that helps all the tenants and adds value.

Levesque says tenants are excited about the concept.

?First-time tenants in an industrial center like this have been coordinating and working with other tenants. It?s like a big family.?

On a Saturday in May, Levesque, the honorary ?mayor? of Hot Rod City, presided over a Grand Opening celebration that featured a cool car and bike show, food, drinks, a live broadcast from KOOL 102.3 FM, biker babes, hot rod chicks, ?Elvis? and a surprise visit from retired UFC champion Randy Couture.

Of course, a lot of the cars from the museum were on display.

Levesque says that after the success of May?s grand opening, a number of events are in the works, like more live radio broadcasts, Saturday car clubs, swap meets, tail-dragger meets, body restoration clinics, BBQs, music and a lot of car shows.

?

A Good Community

William ?Willy? Salzmann and his son ?JR? (Willy Junior) have been operating MCR Corvettes, a performance parts and service shop that?s been in the same location since 1975. JR says overall there?s been a positive change since Dezer moved in with Hot Rod City and gave the area a cosmetic facelift.

?There are more cars here, for sure, and nothing gets messed with any more since they cleaned up the place,? he says. ?And we did get a couple of jobs from Hot Rod City, when customers who bought Corvettes from them asked for the neighborhood Corvette mechanic to look them over.?

Marc Brattin, the owner/operator of Las Vegas Choppers and Las Vegas Tattoo Parlor, agrees.

?It?s definitely a nice touch and a good group of businesses collected here,? Brattin says.

Carl Roberson?s shop, Carl?s Cool Cars, repairs and restores all types of automobiles. He?s been located in the area since 2009. He says he spent six weeks looking around for a suitable location after moving down from Alaska.

?I?ve developed relationships with other shops and we help each other out,? Roberson says. ?If someone gets something in that they can?t or don?t want to work on, there are a lot of resources here. It?s a good community.?

Roberson says it?s an excellent location for his kind of service operation. ?The complex is not razzle-dazzle; it?s older, but clean, painted and well-maintained.?

Other new tenants are coming in because of Hot Rod City, and are attracting even more business opportunities.

Dillon Cox moved in with his growing scooter dealership and repair business, DRC Scooters, last winter. Like Roberson, he spent a significant amount of time looking for a suitable location, and was attracted to the atmosphere and the other auto-related businesses in the area.

?We talked to the people here, and found the same mentality,? he says. ?We like to have fun. We stick to ourselves and hang out and it?s a good bunch of people around here. This is probably the best location I could find for my business in Vegas. It?s a great location, the cost is great and we get no hassle from people. That?s why we moved in here.?

Plus, he says, business has actually been picking up quite a bit recently.

?

City Planning

With Hot Rod City?s plans to promote the complex and host more activities, more customers are bound to find it. As things progress, Levesque says other tenants will also be displaying their work.

It?s growing by word of mouth and Dezer?s collection is definitely a draw to the car enthusiasts. It?s a synergistic atmosphere, which is valuable to the tenants, as well as Dezer.

?I knew Las Vegas would be a great place to house a portion of my collection,? Dezer says, ?but I am truly overwhelmed with gratitude for the people there who have made Hot Rod City so successful this past year. Their strong initial reaction to the collection reminds me of how great a car town Vegas is. They?ve also provided me with a great excuse to visit my cars and enjoy the city more than ever before.?

Li Na marriage boosted by new man in her life

China superstar Li Na has a new man in her life and her husband couldn't be happier.

Ever since Li linked up with Justine Henin's former coach, Carlos Rodriguez, earlier this summer, her career has been reinvigorated with a runner-up spot in Montreal followed by a title in Cincinnati.

It's a success that meant an end to her on-off coaching relationship with husband Jiang Shan, but Li insisted on Monday that her marriage, as well as her career, have both benefitted.

"After I got a new coach I think for both me and my husband it's much easier," said 30-year-old Li after reaching the US Open second round.

"Love is love; coach is coach. You have to separate. After I changed the coach, I didn't say my husband didn't do a good job. I think he's still doing good job.

"But for both sometimes it's too much, you know. Like it's really tough to find a balance between coaching and husband."

Li's triumph in Cincinnati was her first title since her landmark 2011 French Open victory, and her good form continued on Monday when she eased past 20-year-old Briton Heather Watson 6-2, 6-3 to make the second round at the US Open.

It was her first win at Flushing Meadows since her tournament-best performance of a quarter-final run in 2009.

Ninth-seeded Li, who goes on to tackle Australia's Casey Dellacqua for a place in the last 32, believes her win over the 2009 US Open junior champion Watson, was also a victory for mind over matter.

"I am 10 years older than her, so I got more experience on the court. She played very good, but sometimes I had to show her how good I am," explained Li, whose dominance was illustrated by 28 winners to Watson's 10.

"So maybe I was putting a little more pressure onto her. If she looks at me (she knows) I have always been there, so maybe that's a little bit tough for her.

"I should use that against all the young players because they just come to the tournament and maybe they think, 'Oh, she's tough'. Also some girls, they give up in the mind."

Heavy rain scuppered Li's plans for a quickfire win when a downpour sent the players off Court 17 for more than two and a half hours with the Chinese star 5-3 up in the second set.

But she needed just three minutes on the resumption to move into the second round when Watson, the world 71, netted a backhand.

Li's compatriot Zheng Jie, the 28th seed, also made the second round when French opponent Virginie Razzano retired injured with the score level at a set apiece.

Ask beats Answers with $300M bid for About.com

(AP) ? The New York Times Co. is selling its troubled online information service, About.com, to the parent company of Ask.com for $300 million in cash.

That offer trumped a $270 million bid from Answers.com that was reported three weeks ago.

The Times and IAC/InterActiveCorp announced the deal late Sunday. IAC, which also operates the dating site Match.com, is controlled by media mogul Barry Diller.

About provides information on a wide variety of topics and also operates ConsumerSearch.com and CalorieCount.com. Content is written by paid experts known as guides. Ask is a search engine that has tried to set itself apart from competitors by focusing on finding answers to search requests posed in the form of a question. Ask still ranks far below Google and Microsoft's Bing in terms of use.

IAC said Ask and About will continue to operate as separate sites and will complement each other. The Ask search engine can draw on content from About in answering those search queries, and Ask can boost traffic to About by directing more users there.

The Times purchased About in 2005 for some $410 million. About has suffered in the past year because a change in the way Google handles search results made About content harder to find.

In the April-June quarter, the Times took a $126 million after-tax charge against earnings to reflect the declining value of the About business.

In that quarter, revenue from About fell 9 percent from a year ago to $25.4 million. Its adjusted operating profit fell 30 percent to $10.2 million.

Although the Times had been upbeat over About's prospects, Times Chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said the sale allows the company to focus on its core brands, which include such newspapers as The New York Times, the International Herald Tribune and The Boston Globe.

Times' stock fell 3 cents to $9.20 in midday trading Monday. The shares are close to the 52-week high of $9.57 hit last week.

Shares of IAC, also based in New York, rose 55 cents, or 1.1 percent, to $52.05. They hit a 52-week high of $54.20 a month ago.

College Students See Skyrocketing Costs for Health Insurance ...

Thanks to Obamacare, college students are seeing the cost of health insurance policies skyrocket. It?s no wonder when you look at the chart above. President Obama is trying his best to capitalize off of the youth vote this time around, so this is news he probably doesn?t want getting out there.

Guilford College has been forced to raise their student premiums?76 percent, yet this administrator still insists on calling it the Affordable Care Act.

Seems a bit ironic, to say the least.

Guilford joins a long list of colleges raising their premiums. Virtually all current student insurance plans do not meet ObamaCare?s mandates, and?Forbesreportscolleges have been forced to drop their plans or?raise their premiums rates as much as 1,112%?(and no, that?s not a typo).

Most students like their current healthcare, but they can?t keep it.

In the email to Guilford students (available in full here), the VP of Finance lays out exactly why they were forced to hike costs:

?As a result, all collegiate student health plans with an effective date of July 1, 2012 or after must provide a minimum benefit of at least $100,000 per policy year, have no limits on benefits deemed essential by the Act, and provide a preventative care benefit with no deductible, co-pays or co-insurance.? In compliance with these mandates, (emphasis added) the following changes have been made to the College?s student health insurance policy.

?For the 2012-13 academic year, the annual cost of the student health insurance is increasing from $668 to $1,179.?

Read the whole thing, this isn?t just happening at Guilford College. Some colleges are dropping coverage altogether.

Why The Sun may see Prince Harry photo fallout (+video)

The British tabloid The Sun became the country's first newspaper to print nude photos of Prince Harry.

By Arthur Bright,?Staff writer / August 24, 2012

A souvenir shop displays a facemask of Britain's Prince Harry in London, August 24. The Sun tabloid on Friday published photographs of Prince Harry naked in Las Vegas, becoming the first British publication to defy a request from the royal family's lawyers.

The photographs of Prince Harry's naked shenanigans in Las Vegas have been widely published in the US press and abroad. As a result, they can be seen anywhere there's an Internet connection.?

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

But that still may not keep The Sun out of legal hot water, after the British tabloid printed the photos in its own pages last night.

When the photographs were first published earlier this week by Los Angeles-based gossip website TMZ.com, the royal palace quickly confirmed that the pictures did indeed show Prince Harry. But they also warned the Press Complaints Commission that they would consider any publication of the pictures an intrusion upon the prince's privacy.? As a result, Fleet Street and England's broadcasters ? even while writing up the Las Vegas escapade with typical royal-watching bemusement and enthusiasm ? have toed the line and not shown the photos themselves.?

But The Sun broke ranks today, running one of the candids under the headline "Heir it is!", arguing that the publication of the photos was a matter of public interest in England. "By yesterday, the photographs were indisputably in the public domain everywhere in the world," The Sun's editors explained in an article accompanying the photos.

That generated a legitimate public debate about the behaviour of the man who is third in line to the throne and increasingly taking on official duties, as he did most recently at the Olympics? closing ceremony. ...

But there is a clear public interest in publishing the Harry pictures, in order for the debate around them to be fully informed. The photos have potential implications for the Prince?s image representing Britain around the world.

There are questions over his security during the Las Vegas holiday. Questions as to whether his position in the Army might be affected.

The Guardian reports that Louise Mensch, a Conservative member of Parliament, made a similar argument, saying that "There is a clear, demonstrable public interest: the royal family receives money from the civil list; Prince Harry in inviting people to his room [had] the expectation of privacy so there's questions of judgment and questions of security."

But media lawyer Mark Stephens told the BBC that such arguments don't fly. "There?s absolutely no public interest" in seeing the photo itself.

Under English law, Mr. Stephens said, there is clear legal precedent that "if I can explain to you that there is a picture of the prince bare buck naked in a Las Vegas hotel room... unless there is some compelling reason for you to actually see that picture ... the media cannot publish the picture."

The problem, he said, is that the photos are both very intrusive to the prince's privacy and they convey no additional information needed to understand the situation.

"We know that he is bare buck naked, what more do you want to know?" he asked rhetorically. "You don?t need to see the picture."

When the BBC interviewer suggested that the photos raised issues of the royals' public funding and security, Mr. Stephens replied that "You can deal with all of those things, if indeed they are public interest ? by telling me what you?ve just told me," meaning that Harry appeared in the photo naked. "You don?t need to see the picture."

Such reasoning suggests that the palace's prompt acknowledgement that the photos pictured Harry was a way to remove them quickly from the public's view. Had Harry's identity been up for debate, the press would have a strong legal argument that the public needed to see the photos to determine whether the prince was indeed pictured.? By acknowledging that it was Harry, the palace headed off such arguments.

Some argue that the ubiquity of the photographs abroad and online may make the royals' efforts to dissuade their publication seem silly. The Sun's managing editor David Dinsmore called the situation "ludicrous," and Dominic Ponsford of the Press Gazette, a British journalistic trade magazine, wrote that "whether the pictures can now be considered private after being viewed so widely is debateable."

But in a legal sense, the photos' ready availability elsewhere is not likely to affect whether their publication is an invasion of Harry's privacy. Rather, it would likely only affect what damages that The Sun might be required to pay if found liable. By publishing photos already so widely seen, The Sun could argue that their publication's relative harm to the prince was minimal.

'Cyborg': Growing artificial tissues with embedded nanoscale sensors

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? A multi-institutional research team has developed a method for embedding networks of biocompatible nanoscale wires within engineered tissues. These networks -- which mark the first time that electronics and tissue have been truly merged in 3D -- allow direct tissue sensing and potentially stimulation, a potential boon for development of engineered tissues that incorporate capabilities for monitoring and stimulation, and of devices for screening new drugs.

The researcher team -- led by Daniel Kohane, MD, PhD, in the Department of Anesthesia at Boston Children's Hospital; Charles M. Lieber, PhD, at Harvard University; and Robert Langer, ScD, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology -- reported their work online on August 26 in Nature Materials.

One of the major challenges in developing bioengineered tissues is creating systems to sense what is going on (e.g., chemically, electrically) within a tissue after it has been grown and/or implanted. Similarly, researchers have struggled to develop methods to directly stimulate engineered tissues and measure cellular reactions.

"In the body, the autonomic nervous system keeps track of pH, chemistry, oxygen and other factors, and triggers responses as needed," Kohane explained. "We need to be able to mimic the kind of intrinsic feedback loops the body has evolved in order to maintain fine control at the cellular and tissue level."

With the autonomic nervous system as inspiration, a postdoctoral fellow in the Kohane lab, Bozhi Tian, PhD, and his collaborators built mesh-like networks of nanoscale silicon wires -- about 80 nm in diameter -- shaped like flat planes or in a "cotton-candy"-like reticular conformation. The networks were porous enough to allow the team to seed them with cells and encourage those cells to grow in 3D cultures.

"Previous efforts to create bioengineered sensing networks have focused on 2D layouts, where culture cells grow on top of electronic components, or on conformal layouts where probes are placed on tissue surfaces," said Tian. "It is desirable to have an accurate picture of cellular behavior within the 3D structure of a tissue, and it is also important to have nanoscale probes to avoid disruption of either cellular or tissue architecture."

"The current methods we have for monitoring or interacting with living systems are limited," said Lieber. "We can use electrodes to measure activity in cells or tissue, but that damages them. With this technology, for the first time, we can work at the same scale as the unit of biological system without interrupting it. Ultimately, this is about merging tissue with electronics in a way that it becomes difficult to determine where the tissue ends and the electronics begin."

"Thus far, this is the closest we've come to incorporating into engineered tissues electronic components near the size of structures of the extracellular matrix that surrounds cells within tissues," Kohane added.

Using heart and nerve cells as their source material and a selection of biocompatible coatings, the team successfully engineered tissues containing embedded nanoscale networks without affecting the cells' viability or activity. Via the networks, the researchers could detect electrical signals generated by cells deep within the engineered tissues, as well as measure changes in those signals in response to cardio- or neurostimulating drugs.

Lastly, the team demonstrated that they could construct bioengineered blood vessels with embedded networks and use those networks to measure pH changes within and outside the vessels -- as would be seen in response to inflammation, ischemia and other biochemical or cellular environments.

"This technology could turn some basic principles of bioengineering on their head," Kohane said. "Most of the time, for instance, your goal is to create scaffolds on which to grow tissues and then have those scaffolds degrade and dissolve away. Here, the scaffold stays, and actually plays an active role."

The team members see multiple future applications for this technology, from hybrid bioengineered "cyborg" tissues that sense changes within the body and trigger responses (e.g., drug release, electrical stimulation) from other implanted therapeutic or diagnostic devices, to development of "lab-on-a-chip" systems that would use engineered tissues for screening of drug libraries.

How to be effective during Business Presentation

Delicious Digg Facebook LinkedIn reddit StumbleUpon Twitter Bit.ly Email PDFmyURL

The key purpose of any presentation be it written, oral or visual, is communication. To communicate effectively, one must state your facts in a simple, concise and interesting manner. It is well proven that the people learn and retain more information when learning is supported by visualization. Effective presentations entertain, inform, excite and even shock the audience by the proper integration of visual images with the exchange of information.

?

How to be effective during Business Presentation
?

The building-blocks of Effective Business Presentations are ?

?

1.) Subject is the Spine

Though an obvious point, it is vital that you research every nuance of your subject. Read reports and gatherlatest information on the subject is important. It becomes all the more important especially when giving a design presentation or proposal since you are ?selling? your ideas to the audience. When the subject is examined in detail, new ideas and alternative ways of thinking often strike. The ability to present a subject with confidence directly affects your audience?s impressions and will help keep their attention.

?

2.) The Audience Connect

A little research into the makeup of your audience will reap large benefits on presentation day.

For example, if you were speaking on behalf of a new construction project you would tailor vastly different presentations to an audience of engineers and a city council. Using terms which the audience can relate to, can do wonders.

?

3.) Structure your Script

The script does not necessarily have to be a work of literary excellence. The important part is it should convey the meaningful information correctly. The form of the script also depends on the formality of the presentation, the makeup of the audience and the presenter.Any presentation script, regardless of complexity is like any other business correspondence. It should consist of the same four basic parts, an opening, body, summary and closing.

?

4.) Rehearse ? Rehearse ? Rehearse

One cannot afford to go wrong during the presentation and on ?the-day? you would not like to lose grip on things. The final script and outline permit you to rehearse your presentation even before the visuals are completed. This assures that when your final images are prepared and ready, you will be as well.

If you?d like to really test your mettle, drag out the camcorder and tape your rehearsal. Just keep in mind, no one expects you to be Winston Churchill.

?

5.) Select your Weapons Wisely

Once the script is developed and the audience research is completed, this step should be simple. A five minute presentation to a three person audience is probably best made with handout material alone. For a large set of audience, using few simple overhead transparencies should be sufficient. If PowerPoint and similar charting and presentation software is a bit rich for your budget, you may find the free, open-source office suite, Open Office fits your bill perfectly.

Searching for deals: How are hotel prices determined?

A consumer alert for all of us who book vacations online: Are the prices at hotels fixed so you pay more and don't get a deal? TODAY National Investigative Correspondent Jeff Rossen looked into it.

    1. Police: At least 10 shot, 2 dead in NYC shooting

Police say at least 10 people were shot and 2 people, including the shooter, are dead after an incident outside the Empire...

We all want a great deal. So when you're booking a trip, you go online and shop around for the best price: Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz. But now, big accusations of price-fixing ? that the travel websites and hotel chains are scheming together so you don't get a deal, no matter how hard you look.

Have an idea for Rossen Reports? Email us by clicking here!

The commercials are convincing: Use our website and you'll get the best deal out there. From the Travelocity guarantee to Expedia's "best price" and the Orbitz "hot hotel deals."

But a new lawsuit claims you're wasting your time, accusing the biggest travel sites of conspiring with the nation's most popular hotel chains to fix the prices of rooms so you can't get a lower rate online. Attorney Steve Berman filed the suit on behalf of customers.

"This is the industry's dirty little secret," Berman said. "They're not offering the lowest price or the best price, they're offering a fixed higher price."

Story: Rossen Reports: Are you getting what you pay for at the pump?

The lawsuit claims it's an "anti-competitive scheme": Instead of these sites having price wars, which is good for the consumer, they've all agreed to sell rooms at the same price. That way, the sites don't undercut each other, and they all profit.

"The winner here are the Internet travel companies, and the losers are consumers," Berman said.

Story: Rossen Reports: Are top websites in business with counterfeiters?

To see for ourselves, we looked up rates for a refundable king room at a San Diego hotel. On five different sites ? Expedia, Travelocity, Orbitz, Booking.com and Hotels.com ? we got the same price: $189.
