Social media dispute resolution stumps some companies

(Reuters) - If HBO cuts out on you in the middle of the latest "Girls" episode, and you have Charter Communications Inc as your cable provider, don't try tweeting your dismay to their customer service department. Nobody will hear your lament.

Charter, the fourth largest cable provider in the U.S. with 5.2 million customers across 25 states, closed up its social-media based customer service team in December. "Umatter2Charter," as it was known, had been taking customer complaints over Twitter and Facebook and trying to resolve them, but the company says it is now done with working out customer service issues in social media forums.

The move, which might seem to conflict with the growth of social media, highlights the difficulty some businesses are having with free-flowing, round-the-clock social media, its public nature and the expectation of immediate responses.

With Facebook users numbering about a billion and Twitter drawing 200 million, it might be hard to believe that any retail enterprise would drop out of the fray, but Charter isn't the only major company to announce such a move. Also in December, the largest single grocery store in New England - the Wegmans in Northborough, Massachusetts - shuttered its Facebook page despite having some 8,000 fans.

"It's a tough sport," says J.D. Peterson, vice president of product marketing for San Francisco-based Zendesk, which helps companies manage customer service. "The real-time nature of it - at times the volume that can come from it - it's very new and different for businesses."

While Peterson's company recommends going where the customers are - and a big chunk are clearly on social media - Peterson says not all businesses share the same philosophy or have the ability to engage those consumers in these open forums. But any company that has a significant online presence doesn't really have a choice, he says, working with consumers through social media is expected of them.

Advocates for the use social media say the challenge actually presents an opportunity for businesses - showing they are responsive to complaints and care about their customers can bring in revenue.

"I have seen this time and time again, and the end result is that the interaction often turns an irate customer into an advocate for the brand. And that is worth it's weight in gold," says Mike Rowan, chief marketing office for Atlanta-based Swarm, which manages social media for companies.

That's certainly the way retailer Lands' End, a division of Sears Holdings Corp, sees it.

"When we started using social media tools like Facebook and Twitter in early 2009, it gave us a new opportunity to do what we've done for 50 years, which is connect with our customers," says Michele Casper, Lands' End's senior director of public relations. "Whether it is through social media, our call centers or online, we offer the same level of customer service through each channel."

DIVERTING COURSE

Charter says it is not walking away completely from social media - just the idea of providing customer service via Twitter. The company says it has ample other avenues for consumers to get help - including telephone, customer service counters and live chat on its web page.

"We communicate with thousands of customers each day on the phone and in person, and that's where we'll focus our efforts," says Charter spokeswoman Anita Lamont. "While social media is a method some consumers choose to seek help, Charter offers phone and web-based contact solutions where all customers can access resources to provide assistance."

The abandonment of the Facebook page at the Massachusetts Wegmans store, which caused a great fuss among the store's "fans," was, in large part, due to the inability to respond quickly enough to consumers. Store personnel couldn't break off enough time from their other roles to constantly monitor the page, Wegmans spokeswoman Jo Natale says, allowing comments to sit unanswered - a no-no in the world of social media.

"Our top priority has always been, and will continue to be, providing incredible service to customers who shop in our stores," she says. "And it isn't as though there aren't other avenues for folks to connect with us if they have a question or concern."

As much as customers expressed surprise and dissatisfaction at the decision, Natale says, it came down to a decision that if the store couldn't serve the Facebook page at a level it felt was expected that it shouldn't do it at all.

"They quickly discovered, once the store opened and got very, very busy, that it wasn't so easy to stay on top of comments or to find the time to post," Natale says. "In a retail operation like ours, there isn't anyone sitting at a PC or checking a mobile device throughout the day. It's a fast-paced business that requires our people to be on the floor serving customers."

Oil up toward $95 amid Algerian hostage standoff

The price of oil rose closer to $95 a barrel on Thursday as Islamic militants took hostages at a natural gas plant in Algeria and U.S. crude supplies fell unexpectedly.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark oil for February delivery was up 42 cents to $94.66 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 96 cents to close at $94.24 a barrel on Wednesday.

While at least 50 Algerian and foreign hostages have reportedly managed to escape from the gas plant 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) south of Algiers, the capital city, dozens more are still being held. The plant in the Sahara desert has been surrounded by the Algerian army.

"Algeria is not only a leading gas producer; it also produces 1.2 million barrels of crude oil per day," said analysts at Commerzbank in Frankfurt. "Even if supply risks have taken a back seat of late, they may flare up again at any time, resulting in a renewed risk premium on the oil price."

New figures showed oil stocks fell by 1 million barrels, or 0.3 percent, to 360.3 million barrels in the United States last week, while analysts had forecast a rise of 2.5 million barrels.

Despite the drop, supplies of oil and gasoline are above average for this time of year, with crude inventories nearly 9 percent higher than a year ago and gasoline levels more than 3 percent higher.

U.S. production of crude, at more than 7 million barrels a day, is the highest in 20 years.

"Compared to a year ago, the U.S. has added to the world more crude oil than it has taken out" with the sanctions it has led against Iran because of the Islamic Republic's nuclear program, said Olivier Jakob of Petromatrix in Switzerland.

Traders are waiting for China's growth data Friday to help assess the strength of the global economy. China will release fourth-quarter growth data for 2012 as well as overall GDP figures for the year.

Meanwhile, brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, was up 57 cents to $110.25 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline was up 1 cent to $2.7485 a gallon.

? Natural gas lost 4.7 cents to $3.388 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil added 2.15 cents to $3.0139 a gallon.

What the Manti Te'o Hoax Says about Big-Time College Sports

NEW YORK, NY - DECEMBER 08: Heisman finalists...

Heisman finalist linebacker Manti Te'o (Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife)

There are no virgins in big-time collegiate athletics.

That?s a favorite phrase of a good friend of mine who grew up in the collegiate athletic world and knows it well. Let me add one caveat.

Except for Manti Te?o. Until now.

Only days ago Te?o was hailed as what collegiate athletics is supposed to be all about ? a gifted athlete, team leader, good student as well as one who radiated true character. He also may turn about to be, if not a fraud, then less than truthful.

Last September the story about the death of his girlfriend and his grandmother within days of one another but did not deter Te?o from playing. After their deaths Te?o?s play improved and that kick started talk of him winning ?the Heisman Trophy.

Throughout the fall Te?o gave interviews about his late girlfriend who had the misfortune of being in a serious car accident then being diagnosed with leukemia. Te?o stood by her virtually. The operative word being virtual since they conversed over the phone and via text. The two never met but Te?o, a devout Mormon, claimed upon her death that she was the love of his life.

Sad, but untrue. Totally. The story was a hoax, according to Deadspin, the only outlet that bothered to investigate it. Every other media outlet from the TV networks and?Sports Illustrated to major newspapers as well as the South Bend Tribune took Te?o at his word and ran with it.

Was Te?o complicit in this hoax? Notre Dame claims he was not as does Te?o, but questions arise about why he never saw the young woman, never visited her, or attended her funeral yet pledged undying love. He did reveal in interviews that the two would meet again, presumably in heaven. Or now as it turns out maybe some place else, because the voice he was speaking to all this time is still alive. She called him last December, and that?s when he blew the whistle on the hoax to Notre Dame.

The media has been beating itself up over not being more vigilant in probing the story for accuracy. To me that?s not the real issue, the bigger issue that this story, as an article in the Washington Post pointed out, was enhanced and spun by an organization that knows all about spinning. Notre Dame. No other school knows how to blow its own trumpet as well as the Golden Domers do.

Notre Dame?s athletic director, Jack Swarbrick, has backed Te?o?s story. In a recent press conference, Swarbrick claims that an investigation was conducted and shows that Te?o was telling the truth about the hoax. Swarbrick also said, with a catch in his voice, ?There?s a lot of tragedy here. There?s a lot of sorrow here. But the thing I am most sad of [is]? that the single most trusting human being I?ve ever met will never be able to trust in the same way again in his life.?

Cynics might call what Te?o underwent, if he is truly a victim, growing up. Good news is that fictional story died. The tough news is that Te?o and Notre Dame officials must face the music.

But this story is far bigger than egos at Notre Dame. It hits on a theme that gets at the heart of collegiate athletics. Image building, or in reality image pimping.

We ? and by that I mean schools, fans and the media ? want to turn these kids into things they are not. We want to paint them as heroes overcoming incredible odds to excel on the fields of play. But that?s not enough. We want to portray them as humanitarians, too.

Players are encouraged to visit children in hospitals and do volunteer work in their spare time ? that is, when they are practicing, attending class, and exercising in the weight room. To their credit, many athletes do wonderful work in their communities, but that does not make up for the hoax that is collegiate sports.

The real fraud in collegiate athletics is the idea that schools care about their athletes.

What they really are is pawns in a system. Too many football and basketball players at big-time programs never graduate. The schools use them to further their economic ends but care little for the student when eligibility is over. (Note: Notre Dame?s graduation rate for its football players is among the highest.)

And this does not cover the legacy of injuries (bad knees, weak shoulders, arthritic hips, etc.) that football players will carry for the rest of their lives.

As my friend says, there are no virgins in collegiate athletics, but there may be plenty of pimps. We simply call them by another name ? university administrators.

Amiigo smart fitness bracelet identifies more than 100 exercises

There are quite a few wearable sensors designed to provide some high tech help getting fit, such as larklife and Fitbit. But a team of designers from Salt Lake City in the U.S. is convinced there?s room for their Amiigo, a fitness bracelet project currently going the crowdfunding route. Considering how fast the project has attracted support it seems that, yes, there is room for another player in this niche.

Like other similar products, Amiigo is a combination of software and the hardware. The hardware comprises two components: a bracelet and shoe clip, both of which are waterproof. The micro-adjustable bracelet is worn on the wrist to capture the movement of the upper body, while the shoe clip, which slides onto any shoe lace and even some shoe straps, enables detailed tracking for cycling, leg exercises, and other activities where arm movement is not present. While the shoe clip can be stored or carried around as an attachment to the bracelet and each component can function independently, to get the most of the system it?s a good idea to use both.

The designers behind Amiigo promise it can track and identify over one hundred different activities and track specific data such as exercise type, reps, sets, duration, speed, and intensity. This translates into a more personalized experience and allows users to create and record their own exercise routines.

Amiigo also captures heart rate, blood oxygen and skin temperature data to calculate overall activity level, and number of calories burned, which gives users a better idea of how the activity affects the body.

?Amiigo is unique because we've created a gesture recognition technology. This allows the device to track much more than overall activity. It can identify things like bicep curls, squats, cycling, elliptical training, etc. so users can track more detailed activities,? said David Scott, who designed Amiigo with Abe Carter.

It gets even more personalized and creative as users can come up with their own unique routines. Once they are recorded, the device will recognize them in future workouts. Users can also set goals and compare their performance with friends. The social aspect is, in fact, at the center of Amiigo?s concept ? as the name of the product alludes to (amigo is friend in Spanish and Portuguese; the extra i pumps up the cute factor).

The designers believe exercising should be a fun and social activity. The system enables sharing performance information on social networks, organizing competitions with friends ? or amigos ? and earning points, regardless of the type of physical activity in question. It could be running, swimming, cycling, weight-lifting, or just about any other fitness pursuit.

Both hardware components use Bluetooth 4.0 to connect to iOS devices (iPhone 4S and newer) and Android devices supporting BLE. However, Amiigo's memory can store data for hours, so a constant Bluetooth connection isn't necessary and you don't have to carry your phone while working out if you don't want to.

The Amiigo team also welcomes hackers to ?play around? with the system with an open-source SDK available.

After only a couple of days on indiegogo the device is already closing in on its funding goal with the Early Bird tier that offered an Amiigo in black for US$89 having already been filled. Backers will need commit a minimum of $99 to secure one of the devices, which is still a nice saving since the product is set to retail at more than $125.

The design team details the Amiigo in the indiegogo pitch video below.

New nanoscale coating won't get wet; Repels most liquids

Jan. 16, 2013 ? A nanoscale coating that's at least 95 percent air repels the broadest range of liquids of any material in its class, causing them to bounce off the treated surface, according to the University of Michigan engineering researchers who developed it.

In addition to super stain-resistant clothes, the coating could lead to breathable garments to protect soldiers and scientists from chemicals, and advanced waterproof paints that dramatically reduce drag on ships.

Droplets of solutions that would normally damage either your shirt or your skin recoil when they touch the new "superomniphobic surface."

"Virtually any liquid you throw on it bounces right off without wetting it. For many of the other similar coatings, very low surface tension liquids such as oils, alcohols, organic acids, organic bases and solvents stick to them and they could start to diffuse through and that's not what you want," said Anish Tuteja, assistant professor of materials science and engineering, chemical engineering and macromolecular science and engineering.

Tuteja is the corresponding author of a paper on the coating published in the current issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

She and her colleagues tested more than 100 liquids and found only two that were able to penetrate the coating. They were chlorofluorocarbons -- chemicals used in refrigerators and air conditioners. In Tuteja's lab, in a demonstration, the surface repelled coffee, soy sauce and vegetable oil, as well as toxic hydrochloric and sulfuric acids that could burn skin. Tuteja says it's also resistant to gasoline and various alcohols.

To apply the coating, the researchers use a technique called electrospinning that uses an electric charge to create fine particles of solid from a liquid solution. So far, they've coated small tiles of screen and postage-stamp-sized swaths of fabric.

The coating is a mixture of rubbery plastic particles of "polydimethylsiloxane," or PDMS, and liquid-resisting nanoscale cubes developed by the Air Force that contain carbon, fluorine, silicon and oxygen. The material's chemistry is important, but so is its texture. It hugs the pore structure of whatever surface it's being applied to, and it also creates a finer web within those pores. This structure means that between 95 and 99 percent of the coating is actually air pockets, so any liquid that comes in contact with the coating is barely touching a solid surface.

Because the liquid touches mere filaments of the solid surface, as opposed to a greater area, the developed coating can dramatically reduce the intermolecular forces that normally draw the two states of matter together. These Van der Waals interaction forces are kept at a minimum.

"Normally, when the two materials get close, they imbue a small positive or negative charge on each other, and as soon as the liquid comes in contact with the solid surface it will start to spread," Tuteja said. "We've drastically reduced the interaction between the surface and the droplet."

With almost no incentive to spread, the droplets stay intact, interacting only with molecules of themselves, maintaining a spherical shape, and literally bouncing off the coating.

One classification of liquid that this coating repels is the so-called non-Newtonian category, which includes shampoos, custards, blood, paints, clays and printer inks, for example. These are liquids that change their viscosity depending on the forces applied to them. They differ from the Newtonians, such as water and most other liquids, whose viscosity stays the same no matter the force applied. Viscosity is a measure of a liquid's resistance to flow on the application of force, and it's sometimes thought of as its thickness.

"No one's ever demonstrated the bouncing of low surface tension non-Newtonian liquids," Tuteja said.

Austin Sales Training, Presentation Skills, and Meeting Facilitation

Davis / Hill Solutions LLC is a training and consulting firm designed to assist companies in Austin, Texas (and beyond) with staff?development?courses in sales, leadership, business development, communications, and presentation skills.

When I began speaking professionally four years ago I assumed that I would have a robust training component to my business. ?However, in the midst of the recession many companies suspended their employee training programs (thus, I built my business around speaking at conferences and individual coaching). While I often was asked to create in-house corporate classes by those who had seen me speak, it was not an active part of my early business focus.

Today there is a renewed interest in customized classes to educate, inspire and motivate employees. ?Additionally, many companies and law firms are finding it useful to bring in outside facilitators to create better engagement in their planning sessions. ?I have always enjoyed this component of my work, and am excited to work with a?variety of companies across several?industries.

Davis / Hill Solutions is a distributor of DiSC Workplace Assessments, and much of the DiSC training methodology and?course-ware?are utilized in the classes we offer. ?Every class is designed with the client's unique staffing framework, and half and full day instruction are available. ?

We will be working with a variety of experienced trainers to make sure each client?receives?the ideal instruction. ?Additionally there is a series of public classes being developed in?conjunction?with local incubators and co-location facilities for entrepreneurial companies and solo-preneurs (more information coming soon!). ?

If your team is ready for education and facilitated discussions to move your company closer to their potential, I look forward to talking with you soon.

Have A Great Day.
