Limbaugh doesn't back down on criticizing student

When conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh used offensive words to describe a law student who supports mandated contraception coverage it set off a firestorm of criticism. NBC's Anne Thompson reports.

By Msnbc.com, NBC News and and news services

Despite an outcry that has crossed political lines, conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh did not back down Friday from his criticism of a Georgetown student who advocated for the availability of birth control at a recent?hearing before congressional Democrats.

During his latest show, he mocked the fact that Sandra Fluke received a phone call from President Barack Obama, insisting that given her testimony about birth control, she should "disconnect the phone. I'd go into hiding and hope the media didn't find me."

Limbaugh also denied he was opposed to birth control, according to a transcript of his show. ?This is about expanding the reach and power of government into your womb, if you're a woman. This is about the Democrat Party wanting more and more control over you.? What was early feminism all about? Emancipation, individuality, freedom, liberation, all of these things. Now here comes Danica Patrick out and she says, "I'm perfectly comfortable letting the government make my health decisions for me." Well, folks, I'm gonna tell you: Right there, that's the death and the end of feminism.?

The furor was sparked by Limbaugh's comments on Wednesday, when he branded Fluke a "slut" for her support of the administration's new policy on contraception. The radio show host repeated the charges on Thursday, saying: "Well, what would you call someone who wants us to pay for her to have sex? What would you call that woman? You'd call 'em a slut, a prostitute or whatever."

Vitals: Women roar back at Rush's rhetoric

Religious-affiliated organizations, the Roman Catholic Church and social conservatives have protested an administration policy requiring contraception coverage in health insurance provided by religious-affiliated institutions?as an infringement on religious liberty. An effort by Republicans in the Senate to overturn it failed this week.

A call from Obama
Fluke has spoken out against the Republican effort and advocated making contraception available to all women, drawing fire from Limbaugh and some other conservative commentators.

However, she has drawn broad support from Democrats. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California decried Limbaugh's comments as "outside the circle of civilized discussion and that unmask the strong disrespect for women held by some in this country." The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee additionally sought donations as a result of the outrage.

The Georgetown University law student reacts to Rush Limbaugh's comments and reveals that President Barack Obama called her offering encouragement, support and thanking her for speaking out for women's rights.

"I think my reaction was the reaction that a lot of women have had when, historically, they've been called these types of names and that really I think ... and that was initially, to be stunned by it, but then to quickly feel outraged and very upset by it," Fluke said about Limbaugh's remarks Friday on the TODAY show.

On Friday, the White House?got involved.

"The president called her to thank her for speaking out ... and expressed his disappointment that she had been subjected to these kinds of attacks," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters.

Obama spoke with Fluke for several minutes from the Oval Office, Carney said, making clear the president was troubled by the remarks.

Woman called 'slut' by Limbaugh is 'stunned, outraged'

"He thinks they were reprehensible, they were disappointing," Carney said. "It is disappointing that those kinds of personal and crude attacks could be leveled against someone like this young law school student, who was simply expressing her opinion on a matter of public policy."

The president?s policy, which requires all employers that provide health insurance -- except for houses of worship and churches -- to provide coverage for women's contraceptives, has created a election-year firestorm. Non-employer-sponsored health insurance policies would also have to cover them.

Obama subsequently tweaked the policy so that religiously affiliated employers like hospitals, universities and charities would not be required to cover the cost, which would fall instead on insurers. That did not satisfy the Catholic Church, whose official policy rejects the use of artificial contraceptives.

GOP criticism
Limbaugh's comments have also been criticized by Republican leaders.

Speaker John Boehner did not approve of the radio host's language, his spokesman Michael Steel said Friday. "The speaker obviously believes the use of those words was inappropriate, as is trying to raise money off the situation." Steel was referring to the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which has started a campaign characterizing the debate over women's ?contraception as "the Republican War on Women."

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said Limbaugh was "being absurd" in his comments, describing the radio host as an "entertainer" taking an absurd point of view.

Meantime, advertisers have come under pressure to withdraw their ads from his show and?at least three companies, Quicken Loans and bedding retailers Sleep Train and Sleep Number, bowed to the pressure.

25E: The Cut Energy Bills at Home Act | Green Spaces Real Estate

This is very exciting news that I came across on the blog from San Francisco-based Efficiency First, ?a national nonprofit trade association that unites the Home Performance workforce, building product manufacturers and related businesses and organizations in the escalating fight against global warming and rising energy costs.? Their page ?Introducing 25e: The First Performance Based Tax Credit for Homes? includes links to the actual text of the Senate bill, a quick reference fact sheet, and a webinar from December that discusses it in detail, as well as software and contractor credentials.

The brief description is:

The Cut Energy Bills at Home Act has been introduced in the Senate with bipartisan support. If passed, the bill would create a new 25e tax credit ? the first residential performance-based tax credit given to homeowners who make energy efficiency improvements. The proposed bill would provide performance-based tax credits of up to $5,000 per project for homeowners who install qualified energy efficiency measures

I signed the petition in support of this important new bill, saying:

As a Realtor and EcoBroker I support any smart legislation that will create a market-driven change to building quality and energy consumption. 25E could create a revolution in bottom-up energy conservation by individual power users, from east to west, north to south. As someone born in the same year as Earth Day and seeing improvements at a pace slower than the destruction occurring on our planet, I consider it a personal mission to educate my clients, friends, and family about indoor air quality and energy usage in their homes.

If you also feel this is important, please endorse this new legislation by signing their petition to add your support to this important effort! Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

CodeRunner leads iPhone Games of the Week (Appolicious)

This week?s best mobile video game almost isn?t. CodeRunner, the leading title from the last seven days, uses your iPhone?s GPS capabilities to create a game that takes place in the real world, requiring you to play a secret agent who spies on, tails and hacks other agents. Of course, they?re all make believe, but that doesn?t mean CodeRunner won?t have you moving around your neighborhood or another public space, pretending to be in pursuit of the bad guys. Read about it and four other great titles below.

CodeRunner (iPhone, iPad) $2.99

In CodeRunner, the world around you is the video game, which is a cool concept indeed. The game leverages your iOS device?s GPS capabilities and sends you on something of a make-believe scavenger hunt to real locations in your area. Once there, you?ll receive bits of story and information about your ?mission,? which is often to follow imaginary operatives and hack imaginary systems. It?s a great concept that lets you pretend to be a secret agent in a public place, without looking like a crazy person. CodeRunner is a very cool idea with a good sense of humor, high production values and a smile-inducing execution ? it?s kind of like playing with Nerf guns and other trappings of childhood.

Martian caves sprawl before you, diving deep into the crust of the red planet. You?re charged with exploring it in 2-D side-scroller Waking Mars, a platformer that allows you to navigate using a jetpack and your wits. In each stage of Waking Mars, you?ll need to solve puzzles by planting Martian seeds and spreading life. Waking Mars has a pretty interesting story, strong production values and lots of sci-fi cred to keep players exploring the depths of Earth?s nearest counterpart in the solar system.

The basic premise of AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! has players throwing themselves off buildings to score points. That?s already pretty cool. In each level you plummet at incredible speeds, using tilt controls to fly close to buildings and score points by grabbing ?score panels? along the way. And in each level, you?ll need to be careful to deploy your parachute at the right moment to avoid breaking bones as you finish each base jump. Formerly a PC title, AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! works extremely well as an iOS title, leveraging tilt and touch controls and bringing a lot of high-speed impacts to players on the iPhone and iPad.

Ziggurat (iPhone, iPad) $1.99

ZigguratAliens have killed off all humans except for you, and in a daring final stand with an energy cannon, you have to take down as many as you can. Ziggurat is pretty simple ? shoot aliens until they overwhelm you ? but it has a lot of cool little touches that make it a game you?ll keep coming back to. Aiming is done either in a slingshot fashion as in Angry Birds, or by sliding your finger along the bottom of the screen. The strength and speed of each shot is determined by how long you hold your finger down to charge it, which means you can?t just tap away madly. Instead, every shot counts, and the enemies move in some difficult-to-predict patterns that can make Ziggurat highly challenging. It?s tough, but you get to brag about your alien body count on Facebook and Twitter, and that definitely helps make up for it.

Circadia (iPhone, iPad) $0.99

Puzzler Circadia makes great use of simplicity. Each level of the game is set on a black background with a simple mandate that has players attempting to time shockwaves as they cross the screen. Each level has a white dot on it and colored spots. Each colored spot releases a shockwave when tapped, and the color of the spot determines the speed at which it moves. The goal is to make the shockwaves hit the white dot at the same time by timing your taps on the screen. Levels get more and more complex with additional spots, moving white dots and other variables, but despite its simplicity, Circadia is an addictive and elegant title.

Voter Photo ID Gets MN Senate Finance Scrutiny | The UpTake

The voter photo ID constitutional amendment gets a hearing before the Minnesota Senate finance committee. Opponents have been asking for more public testimony on the bill because it now includes provisional balloting. Public testimony on provisional balloting hasn?t been allowed the last two hearings.

In the bill?s last hearing, chair Senator Mike Parry (R-Waseca) seemed to indicate that the public would have a chance to speak on the bill.

The committee voted 9-6 to send the bill to the Senate Rules committee.

Pint-Sized Party Ideas: 3 Fun Games to Make Your Kid's Birthday ...

Posted by Eren Mckay on February 29, 2012 ? 1 Comment?

So your kid?s birthday is coming up and you?ve already started preparing for this exciting day. While the food and the decorations are essential parts to any celebration, the games are where the real heart of the party happens.

Games are always a great way to bring your guests together and make each child feel included. If you choose the right games, they will create an environment for bonding. You always want all of the guests to leave feeling like they had a really fun time.

3 Awesome Birthday Party Games for Kids

Birthday Party Game #1: Messy Egg Relay Race

One thing that all kids have in common is that they love making messes. So why not kick off your kid?s party with the messy egg relay race?

The best place to play this game is outside in the yard. Separate the kids into two teams. Each team will line up and have up to 10 players each. Each team will have a bowl with 15 raw eggs placed on a chair next to the first person in line. On the opposite side of the yard, there should be a large table with two empty bowls where the kids will put their eggs.

Each player will have to balance a raw egg on a spoon to the other side of the yard. If they let the egg fall they need to go back and get another egg. There are 5 extra eggs in the bowl for this purpose. When they reach the table, they will place the egg in the bowl without cracking it. Then they run back to their team and tag the next player in line.

The first team to fill the bowl with 10 eggs wins. If you would like to play this game indoors, then you?ll have to previously boil the eggs so that when they fall on the ground, they won?t create a mess.

Birthday Party Game #2: Treasure Hunt

It?s amazing how kids love those little prizes that we can find for cheap prices. When you?ve taken the day to run errands, stop by a Dollar Store and purchase lots of cute prizes such as tiny cars, masks, fairy wands, candy, chocolates, whistles, and even soap bubbles.

You can also buy them in the theme that you chose for your party. So if you chose a theme like Backyardigans, you can buy backyardigans party supplies and favors that can be used during the treasure hunt. Before any of the kids arrive, hide all of the prizes in different corners of the house and out in the yard if you have good weather.

When it?s game time, each child will receive a small plastic sack for them to put all of the trinkets that they find. Kids will have 10 minutes to find as many prizes as they can. The child with the most prizes in their sack will win an extra special grand prize.

Birthday Party Game #3: Playdough Sculpture Competition

Stimulate the artist in each child by having a playdough competition. To tie this game in with the theme that you?ve chosen for the party, have them make sculptures out of the main characters.

For example; if you?ve decided to throw a disney cars birthday party, have them make scupltures of Lightning McQueen. Give each child 3 colors of playdough. They could also make a second creation of whatever they felt like doing.

Have different categories so that everyone can win. For example: the funniest, most unique, most creative, prettiest, etc. Buy prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. By doing this everyone will end up winning something and feeling happy about it all.

The Progress Review ? Governor Branstad Proclaims March Flood ...

On March 1 several state agencies will kick off a month-long Flood Awareness Month campaign to assist Iowans in preparing for and remaining safe during flood events. Flood awareness is particularly important when considering the damage caused by flooding in 2008, 2010 and 2011. Even with promising projections by the National Weather Service for a generally low risk of widespread flooding this year, localized floods can occur anywhere and anytime. This campaign will make Iowans aware of their risk exposure and provide ways to address that risk and prepare an emergency plan. id="0">id="1">

Governor Terry Branstad has signed a proclamation officially declaring March Flood Awareness Month. Flood-related information and safety tips will be shared throughout March with the media and the public by officials from the Iowa Insurance Division, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division. id="2">id="3">

State officials advise people to begin assessing their flood risk by being aware of whether they live in or near a flood plain, discussing flood preparations with their families, and considering whether flood insurance would be a good choice for them. Iowans who rent or own a home or business should also be aware of the availability of flood insurance. Iowans want to consider looking into the insurance as soon as possible, because unlike homeowner?s insurance, there is a 30-day waiting period before flood insurance begins once a person purchases a policy. Iowans can find out more by visiting the Iowa Insurance Division?s flood awareness Web site at www.DontTestTheWatersIowa.gov. id="4">id="5">

Another helpful Web site for Iowans to refer to is www.FloodSmart.gov. Homeowners, renters and small business owners can estimate their premiums, calculate their flood insurance rate and find a local insurance agent qualified to sell flood insurance on this site. There are currently 19,155 policies in 604 Iowa communities that participate in the National Flood Insurance Program, up almost 2,000 in the last year and 74 percent from the time prior to the 2008 floods. id="6">id="7">

Lastly, Iowa?s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division (HSEMD) offers three simple steps for Iowans to protect themselves and their families before a flood or disaster occurs: id="8">id="9">

Learn about and stay aware of flood risks in your community. id="10">id="11">

Work with family members to put together a family emergency and evacuation plan. id="12">id="13">

Put together an emergency kit before a disaster strikes. id="14">id="15">

Iowans can learn more about flood safety tips, evacuation plans and how to prepare for a disaster at HSEMD?s Web site www.BeReady.iowa.govid="16">id="17">
