GM signs 5-year deal to sponsor Manchester United

DETROIT (AP) ? General Motors is still working out how it will spend the money it is saving by scrapping ads on Facebook and pulling out of the Super Bowl.

But it has decided that at least some will go toward a five-year deal to make Chevrolet the official automotive sponsor of the popular British soccer club Manchester United.

GM formally announced the partnership on Thursday, saying that it's part of the plan to make Chevy an iconic brand across the globe.

The company wouldn't say how much the deal will cost, and Paul Edwards, its executive director for global marketing strategy, said it has nothing to do with GM's decisions earlier this month to scrap a $10 million advertising spend on Facebook and to pull out of next February's Super Bowl.

Manchester United claims to be the most popular sports franchise in the world. According to research done for the team, its fan base has doubled in the past five years to 659 million people, nearly one tenth of the world's population. Half of the fans are in Asia, especially in China, where GM sells more cars than in any other country.

While the deal should help Chevy globally, GM will keep strong ad campaigns and sponsorships in each of its regions, including sporting events and concerts in the U.S., Edwards said.

"That doesn't mean we're walking away from Major League Baseball here in the U.S., or the National Football League," he said. "We're still deeply engaged with those sports for the U.S. audience."

GM, he said, is still working out its 2012-2013 advertising campaigns, but it will have a heavy presence in the U.S. during the upcoming Summer Olympics being held in London.

"That is a U.S. media buy that we're leveraging because we see the value in terms of the audience we get," Edwards said.

The Detroit automaker said earlier this month that it would pull its advertising dollars from Facebook because they were not effective. GM said it will no longer pay for ads on the right side of Facebook pages, but it would continue to have pages for its cars, trucks and brands. Facebook doesn't charge for those pages, but GM spends millions on videos and other content for them.

The company also said it realizes the Super Bowl has a huge audience, but it pulled out after CBS, the network airing next year's game, raised prices. The Nielsen Co. said an estimated 111.3 million people in the U.S. watched the New York Giants beat the New England Patriots in this year's Super Bowl, slightly more viewers than in 2011.

GM, Edwards said, will spend the Super Bowl money in more places more often to attract a big audience. "We can invest that money and better engage our consumers in a deeper and sustained way," he said.

Shunning Facebook and the Super Bowl brought criticism of GM from the advertising and auto industries, and it left many wondering about GM's strategy. For instance, the Super Bowl audience would have been a perfect for the company, which will introduce new pickup trucks next year.

But Edwards said GM will reach truck customers with other events such as the Olympics and football and baseball games leading up to the Super Bowl that last a whole year rather than just one day.

GM still plans to spend $4.5 billion globally on advertising this year, the same amount as last year. Edwards said regional spending also will remain steady.

Manchester United got its fan base data from the Kantar research firm, which surveyed 54,000 people in 39 countries. A similar survey in 2007 indicated that Manchester United had 333 million fans, based on 27,000 responses.

Exclusive 'That's My Boy' Clip: Hot For Teacher

Are you ready for the raunchiest, most inappropriate-yet-hilarious father/son comedy of the year? Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg are hoping so with Sandler's first-ever R-rated comedy, "That's My Boy."

MTV News premiered the film as part of our second annual Sneak Peek Week ahead of the 2012 MTV Movie Awards, and a slew of the film's stars were on hand to help present an exclusive clip to the lucky audience: Samberg, Vanilla Ice, Will Forte, Ciara, Milo Ventimiglia and Eva Amurri.

The film revolves around deadbeat dad Donny (Sandler), who got his teacher pregnant when he was just a teenager and raised his son Han Solo Berger (Samberg) as a single parent until Han turned 18. After a financial mishap, Donny reappears in Han's life on the eve of his wedding. As Donny tries desperately to reconnect with his son, who has changed his name to Todd, Donny must face the consequences of his terrible parenting.

The clip provides the background — or an explanation of sorts — for how teenage Donny ended up sleeping with his teacher. In a nutshell, the teacher started it. We see teenage Donny (Justin Weaver) sitting in what appears to be detention for writing an inappropriate note about his teacher (Amurri), who asks if he has a crush on her. Donny looks visibly uncomfortable with the question, particularly after she says, "So, you don't want me?" and takes her hair out of a ponytail and twirls it around her fingers.

"No!" says Donny. "Yeah? I don't know what I'm supposed to say right now!"

"Is that gum in your mouth, Donny?" she asks, putting her hand in front of Donny's mouth so he can spit the gum out, which naughty teacher puts into her mouth and begins to chew.

As is the case with many a Sandler comedy, the scene is both funny and gross at the same time.

Election Battlegrounds: Was 2008 a Blip, or the Leading Edge of Change?

When Barack Obama sailed past the requisite 270 electoral votes to a decisive win in the 2008 presidential election, many hailed the emergence of a new electoral map?one marked by the blurring of the sharp red and blue lines that had carved up the country for 10 years.

North Carolina and Virginia, once Southern vanguards of conservatism, helped elect a Democratic president for the first time in decades. Similarly, deep-red Indiana gave Obama the edge by a tiny, 0.9 percent margin.

The new battleground encompasses 16 states, many of them put into play for the first time four years ago and one more, Arizona, that?s only recently been added to the list. How Obama and Republican Mitt Romney fare this year will help answer the question of whether the larger competitive map from 2008 was a fluke arising from a nationwide outburst of discontent with the party in power, or perhaps something more permanent, rooted in changing demographics.

?The most striking thing about the 2012 map compared to the 2008 map is how similar it is,? said Alan Abramowitz, professor of political science at Emory University. ?There?s a great deal of consistency, which reflects the divisions in the country which are very stable. That said, there are certainly two or three states that could flip.?

The 2012 map puts into focus the way that demographics are roiling the old campaign playbook. Traditional swing states, like Ohio and Florida, remain critical, but they now share the stage with a new breed of battlegrounds?places like North Carolina, Colorado, Nevada?where an influx of minority and youth voters has transformed the political landscape.

Part of the Obama campaign?s success in 2008 can be attributed to effectively recognizing those shifts and wooing new constituencies. The question in 2012 remains whether the president can stitch together those constituencies again or whether those blocs will defect to Romney in the wake of protracted post-recession misery.

Among the states that are likely to flip, most agree that Indiana, which no Democrat had won in more than four decades before Obama, is likely to go back in the Republicans? column without much of a fight. Meanwhile, Missouri, where Obama and John McCain waged a fierce battle four years ago before the senator from Arizona prevailed by 4,000 votes, is trending GOP. Both states are populated with the working-class whites who have been slow to feel the effects of the economic recovery and among whom the president has seen his approval ratings plummet. At this point the Obama campaign isn?t expected to compete seriously in either state.

North Carolina and Virginia are similarly rich targets for the Romney campaign?Virginia had not helped vault a Democrat to the White House since Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, North Carolina not since Jimmy Carter in 1976. Both became competitive relatively late in the game, but don?t expect such stunners in other states this time around. The White House already has its hands full.

?That?s a lot of territory to defend,? said Larry Sabato, director of the Center of Politics at the University of Virginia, regarding the president?s winning roster of states from 2008.

Arizona, however, falls on the opposite end of the spectrum? it?s the one state the president could conceivably carry in 2012 that he couldn?t in 2008, now that native son McCain won't be on the ballot. In the past decade, Arizona?s Latino population has grown an astonishing 46 percent, according to Census figures?a trend that has boded well for Democrats in the Mountain West, where states like New Mexico and Nevada have grown bluer over the years.

Hispanic voters favor Democrats nationally by a 2-to-1 margin, and a recent survey by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press found that Obama leads Romney among Latinos 67 percent to 27 percent, even as both parties signal the bloc?s importance to their coalitions.?

The Obama campaign has made rumblings in the Grand Canyon State?s direction, dispatching volunteers in aggressive voter-registration drives. Moreover, if SB 1070, Arizona?s controversial immigration law, is upheld, it has the potential to motivate Hispanic voters to turn out like never before.? Still, most prognosticators rate Arizona a long shot for the president.

States such as Michigan and Minnesota bring welcome news for the Obama team. Romney would have to break the Democrats' nine-going-on-10 winning streak in Minnesota to bring that state into the GOP fold. In his birthplace, meanwhile, he?s running against one of the Obama administration?s signature accomplishments: the bailout and revival of an auto industry on the ropes.

Daron Shaw, a University of Texas political scientist and Republican pollster, said he?s most struck by Obama's resilience in places in places like New Mexico, Nevada, and Colorado?states where economic pessimism prevails yet voters are still supportive of the president. "But the stickiness of the economy in the upper Midwest poses a particular problem for Obama among blue-collar workers," he said.

Each side has a battleground strategy designed to put the nominee over the top in what is universally viewed as a very tight race. For Romney, the critical states are Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, and Virginia, says Republican pollster Glen Bolger. ?I don?t know that the math works unless a Republican wins at least three out of those four and one out of the Colorado-Nevada-New Mexico trio, and you can throw New Hampshire in as well,? he said.

Democratic pollster Mark Mellman said the expanded battleground means Obama could win reelection even if he loses states like Ohio and Florida that were must-wins in the past. "There's a lot of ways for the president to get to 270," Mellman said. ?It?s not any one state. It?s looking at this whole group of states that form different routes.... That?s really the key.?

We have been a stable family...married almost 23 years. Three daughters 20 (college) 17 1/2 (high school senior) and 5 year old.

We have really never had any major problems or issues with the girls. Little things here and there. Our oldest is very school/career oriented and always has been. Hard worker, very good student, very involved. However she has gotten into trouble. When she was in high school and working at a local business at night - she one time snuck out late and drove to her boyfriends house to give him a present and I found that she was not home - called her which made her speed home and get a ticket) She lied to us and got a ticket - but I get that kids are going to do stupid things sometimes.

Our middle daughter has always been materialistic (we have never handed her anything on a platter).
We preach hard work and respect all the time. She is more street smart than book smart. We believe if she puts her mind to it - she could be an honor roll student - however she has maintained merit roll status. Mostly a B student. She says that she wants to go to college. We have not pressured her to do that. I tried to gear her toward a community college - but she really wants to go away (about an hour and half away) and was accepted. We were thrilled.

She recently started working during the end of her senior year. A job she seems to like and she makes good money. She was very excited about concerts she was going to go to, grad parties etc. Her prom was two weeks ago. The day after her prom she drove out to a picnic prom party and was stopped for speeding. She immediately called me to tell me. My husband and I were disappointed but understood and did not freak out.

Well then - last night - I got a call from the local Sheriff's office that they have her there because she was picked up for shoplifting. She was out shopping for things to go to a concert and tried shoplifting two bathing suit tops.

Needless to say I am beyond disappointed. I am hurt and sad. My husband has not even spoken to her yet. However we told her that her phone is gone, computer is gone, concert is gone, she goes to school and to work and that is it. No parties, no friend's houses....and she has to write a letter of apology to the store.

She still has to go get fingerprinted and get her mug shot and then go to court. I told her that she needs to do these things herself as my husband and I both work. I just don't get it. I don't understand why - when this was going to be "HER" summer of fun.....why would she be acting out like this.

I can't talk to her. I try - but she has never been much of a talker - wants to figure things out herself. But as odd as it sounds, I do consider us close. I just have knots in my stomach.

McGill University student plan provides healthcare to rural areas with Windows Phone and Win 8

Those of us living in metropolitan areas don't think twice about our ease of access to medical care, but those in rural areas don't enjoy such easy access to a doctor. Abhijeed Kalyan and Shravan Narayan from McGill University in Canada are aware of this problem, and came up with a way for doctors to diagnose and treat patients from afar. Called Project Neem, it's got a hub and spoke organizational structure that puts a healthcare worker in every village and leverages the power of Windows Phone to connect them with medical staff in distant cities.

Participating healthcare workers are given basic medical training and a handheld loaded up with a custom app that identifies patients by scanning their national ID card and stores their pertinent medical info -- from temperature and blood pressure readings to a variety of symptoms. The app has a virtual human body on board that lets users tap parts of the anatomy to bring up a series of symptoms that can be selected to provide treating physicians with the info they need. That information is stored in the cloud and accessed by doctors through a Windows 8 app, who then can relay appropriate treatments to the local healthcare worker. Now all we need is someone to make a real-world tricorder, and we'll truly be able to bring medical care to the masses, wherever they may be.

Facebook launches iPhone camera app

Facebook's rocky initial public offering hasn't stopped life at the world's biggest online social network. On Thursday, the company unveiled a camera app for the iPhone.

The app can be downloaded from Apple's App Store and works like most other camera applications for smart phones.?

To take a photo, you tap a camera icon in the upper left corner of your screen, aim and shoot. You can then add filters, crop or tilt your photo, and share it on Facebook.?

The new app is similar to Instagram, the photo-sharing app Facebook is in the process of buying for $1 billion. The acquisition, however, has not yet been completed, and Instagram's employees did not work on the photo app. Facebook has said it expects the Instagram acquisition to close sometime this year.

Facebook didn't give details on when it might release a version of the app for phones that run on Google's Android operating system. In a statement, Facebook said it is "carefully looking at what might make for a good Facebook photos experience across Android devices."?

Factors behind past lemur species extinctions put surviving species in 'ecological retreat'

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) ? New research on the long-term impact of species extinctions suggests that the disappearance of one species does not necessarily allow remaining competitor species to thrive by filling now-empty niches.

Instead, in University of Cincinnati-led research on lemur extinctions over the past 2,000 years, findings suggest that one likely result of changes that lead to species' extinctions is that remaining species go into "ecological retreat." And that retreat can result in new selective and ecological pressures that then increase the extinction risk of surviving species, potentially creating an "extinction cascade."

These conclusions are found in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, in an article titled "Extinction and Ecological Retreat in a Community of Primates" by lead author Brooke Crowley, assistant professor of anthropology and geology at UC.

Co-authors are Laurie Godfrey, professor of anthropology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst; Thomas Guilderson, research scientist, and Paula Zermeno, scientific associate, both of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Paul Koch, professor of earth & planetary sciences at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and Nathaniel Dominy, associate professor of anthropology at Dartmouth College.

Using radiocarbon and isotope analysis from fossils of eight large-bodied lemur species that have died out in Madagascar since the arrival of humans to the island 2,000 years ago, the research team was able to determine the type of habitat in which lemurs in the past lived, their diets, when they died out and whether other still-extant species filled vacated environmental niches.

Findings show that prior to extensive human disturbance, lemurs were very common in open habitats of wooded savannah and spiny thicket on Madagascar, which constitutes the majority of southwestern Madagascar today.

But after the larger-sized lemurs that once inhabited those regions went extinct, related species -- that existed then and are still extant today -- could not fill the empty niches. Instead, still-extant lemur species have shown, over time, an increasing reliance on habitats with dense forest cover.

Said UC's Crowley, "The reasons behind the increased reliance on densely forested habitats are uncertain, but it's likely that low hunting and logging pressures in forest reserves are contributing factors."

She added that while forested areas have experienced human disturbance, even greater disturbance has been documented in the unprotected open, drier areas where lemur species once flourished but have gone extinct.

According to UMass' Godfrey, it's not that lemur species of the past two millennia did not live in forested areas at all nor that today's species live only in forested areas. Rather, lemur species were once very common in other, drier and more open habitats in Madagascar and so, species were not so heavily reliant on forest habitat as they are today.

Our fossil analysis shows that lemur species once preferred a much wider, more distinctive habitat range, which may mean that modern lemurs prefer the densely forested areas simply because these areas offer greater protection. The forest is more of a refuge."

If so, this could help explain other researchers' previously reported findings regarding "mismatches" between lemur anatomy and observed behavior of modern lemurs in the dense forest environments.

And such mismatches could be indications that today's lemurs are in ecological retreat and at risk if conservation and environmental management efforts don't take into account what were once, and may likely still be, their preferred habitats.

"In other words," explained Crowley, "We now have long-term historical data, a broadened historical perspective indicating that what lemurs are doing today -- preferring densely forested areas -- is not representative of their ecological niche over past millennia. That's an indication that we need to rethink our assumptions on their current habitat choices and on our own conservation efforts. And this form of historically informed research can also be applied to other locales and animals to benefit threatened species."

The nine participants who had the biggest Heschl's gyrus managed to identify the pseudo-words at a rate of 97%. The rest of them scored a 63%. Some of them needed to listen to the words 18 times to recognize the sounds. PHOENIX (AP) - After two Tommy John elbow surgeries, a 6-1 start to the season is especially sweet to Chris Capuano.

"I couldn't be having any more fun playing the game right now," he said.

Matt Treanor, Andre Ethier and James Loney homered to give Capuano more than enough support and the Los Angeles Dodgers won their fifth straight by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-1 on Monday night.

Capuano (6-1) allowed one run on four hits in six innings, striking out five and walking one.

"He's an outstanding guy, obviously," said Treanor, his catcher. "Anytime somebody, you know how hard they work to get back in the game and get back in the big leagues, to be able to perform at a high level, that's a tribute to him and his work effort. You can't feel nothing but good for him."

Treanor gave the Dodgers left-hander all the runs he needed with his first homer of the season, a two-run shot off Patrick Corbin (2-3) in the second.

"It's funny, when you least expect it, it happens," Treanor said. "I was just trying to stay in the middle part of the field and get the barrel out. I hit it and I really didn't think it was going to leave the ballpark, but I hit it good and it ended up going out."

Ethier's solo home run into the swimming pool area in right-center came off reliever Craig Breslow in the seventh and raised his NL-best RBI total to 38.

Loney added a two-run homer deep into the right-field seats off Bryan Shaw in the eighth. It came one pitch after Justin Sellers' first career triple brought in the Dodgers' fourth run of the night.

The Diamondbacks have lost eight of nine home games and 13 of their last 16. The NL West-leading Dodgers have their third winning streaks of at least five games and are 5-2 since Matt Kemp went on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.

"Right now, it's just momentum," manager Don Mattingly said. "You get momentum, get rolling, then you're playing with a purpose. That's all."

Arizona catcher Miguel Montero sustained what the Diamondbacks termed "a mild right groin strain" when he chased a foul ball to the screen in the sixth. He finished the top of the inning, but was lifted in favor of Henry Blanco when his time to bat came in the bottom of the sixth.

Jerry Sands led off the second with a single. After Ivan De Jesus struck out, Treanor hit the first pitch he saw into the left-field seats and the Dodgers led 2-0.

Capuano was perfect through three innings before Willie Bloomquist led off the fourth with a line shot off the wall in left-center, about a foot below the home run line, for a triple. Aaron Hill followed with an RBI single up the middle to cut the lead to 2-1. Chris Young, in his first home game since returning from the disabled list (bruised right shoulder), singled with two outs to put runners at first and second, but Capuano nabbed Jason Kubel's line drive up the middle, an ice cream cone grab with the ball sticking out of the top of his glove, to end the inning.

"It's more self-defense than anything," Capuano said of the play. "I was just happy that I looked in my glove and I had it."

De Jesus singled off Shaw to lead off the eighth, then scored when Sellers tripled to the gap in right-center. Loney, who entered the game in a double-switch in the seventh, hit his second home run of the season.

Corbin gave up two runs on six hits in 5 1-3 innings, striking out three and walking two.

"Basically that one pitch, a fastball, I just left it up a little bit," he said, referring to Treanor's homer. "I was trying to get ahead with the fastball. I left it up a little bit more than I would like and he put a good swing on it."
