Biological time-keeper linked to diabetes

ScienceDaily (Jan. 30, 2012) ? Sleeping disorders have been known for some years to increase the risk of diabetes. A French-British team coordinated by Philippe Froguel from the Genomics and Metabolic Diseases Laboratory (CNRS/Universit? Lille 2/Institut Pasteur, Lille, EGID Research Federation) (1) working with Ralf Jockers' team (Institut Cochin, CNRS/Inserm/Universit? Paris Descartes, Paris),) has just linked a gene that plays a key role in synchronising biological rhythms to type 2 diabetes. Researchers in Lille and Paris demonstrated that mutations in the melatonin receptor gene (melatonin or the "hormone of darkness" induces sleep) lead to an almost sevenfold increase in the risk of developing diabetes.

This research, which was published in Nature Genetics on 29 January 2012, could contributed to the development of new drugs for the treatment or prevention of this metabolic disease.

Type 2 diabetes is characterised by excess blood glucose and increased resistance to insulin. It is the most common form of the disease and affects 300 million people in the world, including 3 million in France. This figure should double in the next few years, driven by the obesity epidemic and the disappearance of ancestral lifestyles. It is known that genetic factors, combined with a high-fat, high-sugar diet and lack of exercise, can also contribute to the onset of the disease. Furthermore, several studies have shown that sleeping disorders that affect the duration and quality of sleep are also high risk factors. Shift workers, for example, are at greater risk of developing the disease. No previous research has described any mechanism linking the biological clock to diabetes.

The researchers focused their attention on the receptor of a hormone called melatonin, which is produced by the pineal gland (2) as light fades. Melatonin, also known as the hormone of darkness, can be seen as a biological "time-keeper," synchronising biological rhythms with nightfall. The teams sequenced the MT2 gene, which encodes its receptor, in 7600 diabetics and persons with normal glycaemia. They found 40 rare mutations that modify the protein structure of the melatonin receptor, 14 of which made the receptor in question non-functional. The team went on to demonstrate that the risk of developing diabetes is nearly seven times higher in people affected by such mutations, which make them melatonin-insensitive.

It is known that the production of insulin, the hormone responsible for controlling blood glucose levels, drops at night to prevent any risk of hypoglycaemia. Insulin production starts up again, however, to avoid excess blood glucose during the day, which is when most people eat.

This study could lead to new drugs aimed at preventing or treating diabetes. Researchers could, for example, adjust MT2 receptor activity to control the metabolic pathways associated with it (3). The work also highlights the importance of genome sequencing as a means of personalising treatment for diabetic patients. There are many genetic causes for diabetes and the therapeutic approach needs to be adapted to the metabolic pathways concerned by each patient's particular disorder.

Obama plays up auto industry success story

(AP) ? President Barack Obama wears his decision to rescue General Motors and Chrysler three years ago as a badge of honor, a move to save jobs in an industry that helped create the backbone of the middle class more than a half-century ago.

For Obama, the auto bailout is a case study for his efforts to revive the economy and a potential point of contrast with Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney, who opposed Obama's decision to pour billions of dollars into the auto companies. If Romney wins the Republican nomination, expect to hear a lot about the car industry.

"The American auto industry was on the verge of collapse. And some politicians were willing to let it just die. We said no," Obama told college students last week in Ann Arbor, Michigan. "We believe in the workers of this state."

Obama was expected to visit the Washington Auto Show on Tuesday, giving him another forum to talk about GM and Chrysler, along with the administration's attention to manufacturers and efforts to boost fuel efficiency standards. The White House has taken every opportunity to highlight its efforts to rebuild the auto industry, pointing to GM's reemergence as the world's largest automaker and job growth and profitability in the U.S. auto industry.

The president's campaign views the auto storyline as a potent argument against Romney ? who, even though he is the son of a Detroit auto executive, opposed the bailout. As the industry was collapsing in the fall of 2008, the former Massachusetts governor predicted in a New York Times op-ed that if the companies received a federal bailout, "you can kiss the American automotive industry goodbye." Romney said the companies should have undergone a "managed bankruptcy" that would have avoided a government bailout.

"Whether it was by President Bush or by President Obama, it was the wrong way to go," Romney said at a Republican presidential debate in Michigan in November. Romney said the nation has "capital markets and bankruptcy ? it works in the U.S. The idea of billions of dollars being wasted initially, then finally they adopted the managed bankruptcy. I was among others that said we ought to do that."

Both the Bush and Obama administrations found themselves in uncharted territory in the fall of 2008 and early 2009. GM and Chrysler were on the verge of collapse when Congress failed to approve emergency loans in late 2008. Bush stepped in and signed off on $17.4 billion in loans, requiring the companies to develop restructuring plans under Obama's watch.

The following spring, Obama pumped billions more into GM and Chrysler but forced concessions from industry stakeholders, enabling the companies to go through swift bankruptcies. Obama aides said billions in aid ? about $85 billion for the industry in total ? was necessary because capital markets were essentially frozen at the time, meaning there was no way for GM and Chrysler to fund their bankruptcies privately.

Without any private financing or government support, they argued, the companies would have been forced to liquidate.

Three years later, Obama is trying to turn the tough decision into a political advantage in Ohio and Michigan, which Obama carried in 2008 and where unemployment has fallen of late. During last week's State of the Union address, Obama said the auto industry had hired tens of thousands of workers, and he predicted the Detroit turnaround could take root elsewhere.

Yet Obama's poll numbers in places like Ohio and Michigan remain in dangerous territory, under 50 percent, and the auto industry argument carries some inherent risks.

A Quinnipiac University poll in Ohio released Jan. 18 found Obama locked in a virtual tie with Romney in a hypothetical matchup, with about half the voters disapproving of Obama's performance as president. A poll in Michigan released last week by Lansing-based EPIC-MRA found 48 percent supporting Obama and 40 percent backing Romney in a potential matchup.

Republicans say the bailout still remains unpopular and the government intervention was hardly a cure-all. "The industry was bailed out but a lot of people lost their jobs," said David Doyle, a Michigan-based Republican strategist.

In a nation still soured on bailouts, the government owns more than a quarter of GM. The Treasury Department estimates the government will lose more than $23 billion on the auto bailout: GM is trading at $24 a share, well below the $53-per-share mark needed for the government to recoup its investment in the company.

Romney, facing attacks from Democrats on his work at private equity firm Bain Capital, has tried to use the GM and Chrysler cases to insulate himself against charges his firm gutted companies and fired workers. "How did you do when you were running General Motors as the president?" Romney said in a December debate. "Gee, you closed down factories. You closed down dealerships. And he'll say, well I did that to save the business. Same thing with us, Mr. President."

Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and others say the decision, while unpopular, saved an estimated 1 million jobs throughout the Midwest and say the industry is coming back.

As a result of the restructuring, the companies can make money at far lower U.S. sales volumes than in the past. Industry analysts predict U.S. sales will grow by at least 1 million this year over last year's 12.8 million units as people replace aging cars and trucks. And North American operations at GM, Chrysler and Ford are thriving, boosting their companies' earnings ? all signs that Democrats say will make the difference in the Midwest.

"I don't know how any reasonable person can fail to acknowledge that this rescue plan worked and the country has benefited," said former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, a Democrat.

Amazon Kindle Fire?s Apple-like blitz scorches Samsung (Appolicious)

Amazon?s Kindle Fire fourth quarter sales threw Samsung Galaxy into a pyre, as Android-based tabs made their moves against the dominant Apple iPad.

Strategy Analytics reported that that 27 million units of tabs shipped in the fourth quarter. Apple and its iPad owned 58 percent of the market.

But Google Android-based tabs increased their share to 39 percent of the global tablet market, up 10 percentage points from the same quarter a year earlier. Shipments of Android tabs tripled to 10.5 million, as Amazon, Samsung, Asus and others busted a move, said Neil Mawston, SA?s executive director.

?Android is so far proving relatively popular with tablet manufacturers despite nagging concerns about fragmentation of Android?s operating system, user-interface and app store ecosystem,? he said.

Mobile app analysts Flurry?s Peter Farago said, ?Overall, Android tablets are growing aggressively as a category.?

But the big surprise was the success of e-tailer and upstart device-maker Amazon and its Kindle Fire against established device giant Samsung. The Fire scorched Samsung?s breakfast, lunch and dinner, according to Flurry.

Farago added: ?Amazon?s launch of Kindle Fire had more in common with an Apple-style launch than it did with aligning with the Android system. To date, the Android world has focused on marketing the operating system and the ?power? of the devices, with quality of content and the consumer experience subordinated in priority. With Google managing the Android Market, which lacks content control and a seamless commerce experience, inertia pushes those developers who choose to build for the platform toward advertising models.?

He said following the holiday season?s boom in Kindle Fire sales, significant downloads driven from the Amazon App Store ?resulted in a massive surge in session usage that just edges out the Galaxy Tab.?Unrounded, Kindle Fire represents 35.7 percent of sessions and Galaxy Tab represents 35.6 percent.?Remarkably, and from a standing start, the Kindle Fire overtook the Galaxy Tab in just a few short months.?

Can Amazon Kindle Fire?s scorched Earth path close the huge gap to take on ?Apple?s iPad? Let?s revisit this a year from now.

Man rescued after being stuck in NM mud for 3 days (AP)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? A homeless man who was stuck in thick mud near the Rio Grande river in Albuquerque for three days was rescued Saturday after some high school students on a field trip heard him yelling for help, authorities said.

However, the man's newfound freedom wasn't going to last. Police said he was wanted on a felony warrant, and they planned to arrest him after he was treated at a local hospital.

A group of La Cueva High School students and their biology teacher heard the man yelling Saturday morning from a marshy wetlands area in the Oxbow Open Space Preserve, the Albuquerque Fire Department and police officials said.

The students were in the area ? about two miles north of Interstate 40 in Albuquerque ? doing a school project. They called authorities and told them that the man said he'd been stuck in the river for three days and could not move, according to a police report.

Fire crews and preserve officers responded and found a "male subject stuck on a reed island about a hundred yards from the west bank of the river," the report said.

Crews deployed an air boat and used a pulley system to lift the man from the mud and water, and up a hill.

Police later identified the man as Clayton Senn, a transient who'd been living near the river.

Authorities said they discovered a warrant for Senn's arrest on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a felony. Senn was taken to an Albuquerque hospital for treatment and was to be booked on the warrant upon his release, police said.

Details on Senn's condition were not immediately available.

European Startup Accelerators Gradually Revealing Data ? But We Need Much More

Startup-SaunaWith the rise of numerous accelerator programs in Europe one cannot help but wonder whether jumping through the application process hoops, sweating through the mentoring sessions and flirting with investors at demo days are all worth a founders? time. When I attended the recent Startup Sauna demo day in Helsinki in December 2011, I met teams not only from Finland but also from Russia, Poland and the Baltic Rim. I was amazed how young many of the participating entrepreneurs were. So when the performance stats from Startup Sauna hit my mailbox I was curious to learn what actually happens to all those startups after they complete the seven-weeks-long coaching program in the startup co-working space Aalto Venture Garage.

(AP) ? Joe Paterno's family along with former players and assistant coaches made their way Wednesday to a campus spiritual center for the revered coach's funeral service, a moment of private mourning during a week in which thousands from Penn State were saying goodbye.

Paterno's family arrived just after 1 p.m. on two blue schools buses, the same kind the coach and his team rode to home games on fall Saturdays. His wife, Sue, was first off the bus, followed by his son and former assistant, Jay.

Another bus, a charter, carried more guests. Paterno's defensive coordinator Tom Bradley walked down the sidewalk with Penn State and NFL great Franco Harris.

The funeral, to be followed by a procession to a nearby cemetery for burial, was to culminate the second of three days of events for Paterno. Penn State will host a public memorial Thursday at its basketball arena.

Paterno, who died of lung cancer Sunday at 85, served as the school's head football coach for 46 years and won two national titles before being fired in November in the wake of a child sex-abuse scandal involving a former assistant.

The last few months have been emotionally wrenching for the school's students and alumni, but mourners over the past two days have focused on the inspiration Paterno provided to them, his accomplishments both on and off the field and his philanthropy.

Thousands of people indicated on a Facebook page that they intended to line the streets of State College as Paterno's funeral procession went by.

Two days of public viewing that ended about noon Wednesday drew many more, despite a wait that lasted hours. Members of Penn State's rugby team handed out hot chocolate Wednesday morning and took donations for the Special Olympics and the student run dance marathon fundraiser ? the two efforts Paterno's family requested receive donations in lieu of flowers.

First in line for Wednesday's viewing was David Brown, who left his home in Greensburg at midnight and drove more than two hours to State College, then prepared to wait a few hours outside until the doors opened.

"I wouldn't have been surprised if there were 1,000 people here," he said.

Behind him was John Myers, 70, who drove more than two hours from Tamaqua to arrive at 5 a.m. ? three hours before the viewing was scheduled to begin.

"It's worth it," Myers said. "Joe was one of the best, if not the best, football coaches ever."

Yet he was ousted just days before learning of his diagnosis. Paterno's son, Scott, has said his father was not bitter and remained upbeat until the end of his life.

Jerry Sandusky, the former assistant coach at the center of the abuse scandal, has been charged with molesting 10 boys over a period of 15 years. He has pleaded not guilty and is on bail, awaiting trial. Paterno was criticized in the days after Sandusky's arrest for not going to authorities outside campus when he was told of an allegation against the retired assistant in 2002. Paterno did notify two of his superiors at Penn State.

Mike McQueary, the then-graduate assistant who told Paterno about the alleged assault, went both to the public viewing and the funeral. Also at the service was former Athletic Director Tim Curley, who along with former university official Gary Schultz, is accused of perjury and failure to notify authorities about the McQueary allegation.

Most mourners, however, did not want to focus on the final days of Paterno's career.

Tom Haack, a small business owner from Camp Hill, took off work to pay his respects to Paterno at the viewing. The 59-year-old Haack said he chose Penn State to get his master's degree in business in the late 1980s, partly due to his admiration for the coach.

"His ethics, doing things the right way, excellence in everything you do, all of that attracted me and attracted many others to Penn State," he said. "I think his influence made it a better school and helped make it what it is today."

Inside the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center, the coach's body lay in a brown hardwood casket topped by a spray of white roses. About six feet away sat a stylized black-and-white picture of the man who became lovingly known on campus as "JoePa," smiling and peering out through his trademark thick-rimmed glasses.

Paterno's casket had an "honor guard" of two Penn State players ? one past and one present. Some mourners stopped for a moment of reflection, or to genuflect in the interfaith hall.

Others fought back tears and sniffles. The only other sounds were the occasional clicks of news photographers taking pictures.

Paterno won 409 games ? a record for major college football ? in a career admired by peers as much for its longevity as its success. Paterno also took as much pride in the program's graduation rates, often at or close to the top of the Big Ten.

"The passion, the love that he gave almost gave you a sense that you wanted to give it back to him," Penn State men's basketball coach Patrick Chambers said after escorting his team to the worship hall Tuesday evening. "We're forever indebted to him and we will continue to work as hard as we can."

Chevy Volt caught in Washington?s crossfire

The Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle is shown.

By msnbc.com news services

The Chevy Volt became a political punching bag on Wednesday, with Republicans accusing the Obama administration of hiding fire risks from the public, and General Motors saying its signature electric vehicle unfairly got caught in political crosswinds.

Jim Jordan, chairman of the House Oversight regulatory subcommittee, said it was disturbing that U.S. safety regulators waited six months to open a formal investigation after their own crash tests uncovered fire risks.

He speculated that the administration may have been preserving its own interests. President Barack Obama has heavily promoted electric vehicles like the Volt, and his administration oversaw a U.S. government bailout and bankruptcy restructuring of GM in 2009.

GM Chief Executive Dan Akerson had his own theories about how politics influenced the probe. He told the hearing that the Volt got "disproportionate scrutiny" because it became a surrogate for election-year politics and commentary on GM's business and Obama administration policy.

"We did not engineer the Volt to be a political punching bag. And that, sadly, is what the Volt has become," Akerson said.?

After the hearing, GM Chief Executive Dan Akerson told CNBC that he welcomed the chance to get the company?s point of view on the record, adding that the automaker would now have to reconstruct the car?s public image.?

?We are making good products and cars the market loves, whether it?s the volt or other cars,? he said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an investigation on November 25 into the safety of the Volt's battery pack after its own repeated tests uncovered fire risks.

The fires occurred after NHTSA crash tests or other tests where the car's lithium-ion batteries were purposely damaged, and GM has stressed that no "real world" incidents have been reported.

NHTSA closed its two-month investigation last week without finding any defects and expressing satisfaction with GM's remedies to better protect the lithium-ion battery pack.

David Strickland, the agency's administrator, said investigators first needed to analyze why the fires occurred. He said the agency had no real-world data on Volt fires and used "every second" over a six-month period for engineers to perform a thorough investigation.

Strickland said there was no unreasonable risk to public safety and said he would have sounded a public alarm had there been a reason to do so.

"We pulled no punches," he said under withering questioning from Jordan and other Republicans on the committee. "The Chevrolet Volt is safe to drive."

Akerson, who owns a used Volt, said he knew of no pressure from the Obama administration to squelch any public discussion of the fires. He said the administration has no seat on the board and no influence over business decisions. Taxpayers owned a majority stake in GM after its $50 billion bailout and bankruptcy in 2009, a stake that was reduced to a third through the company's public share offering in 2010.

The Volt is the centerpiece of GM's efforts to lead on fuel efficiency. Its development has been supported by Obama, who envisions electric cars as a game changer in reducing oil imports and tailpipe emissions.

The administration has aggressively backed more than $2 billion in funding of suppliers and other research that spurred development and production of the $40,000 Volt and battery systems designed for other electric vehicles. Volt owners are eligible for a $7,500 tax credit for buying a the vehicle, a benefit Obama has sought to sweeten without success.

There are roughly 8,000 Volts on the road today and another 6,500 have been manufactured. All will undergo retrofits to better protect the battery from damage in crashes. GM will also take steps to reduce chances of coolant leaks, which can trigger fires.

Democrats, including Elijah Cummings and Dennis Kucinich, were aggressive in challenging Jordan and Darrell Issa, the chairman of the full Oversight panel. The Democrats said it was the prerogative of Congress to look at the issue, but that the investigation had gone off track.

"I'm concerned that the intended effect of this hearing is to undermine technology that is critical to both protecting the environment and ensuring the success of the U.S. auto manufacturing industry," Kucinich said.

The Oversight Committee has spearheaded the congressional investigation of Energy Department loan programs, including financing of bankrupt solar panel company Solyndra.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Young Breast Cancer Survivors Face Psychological Distress A new study discovers that cancer treatments can significantly hinder the quality of life of younger breast cancer survivors.

Researchers discovered younger women with breast cancer experience a decrease in their health-related quality of life. They also may experience increased psychological distress, weight gain, a decline in their physical activity, infertility and early onset menopause.

The study is published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in women, and is the leading cause of death in women under 50 in the U.S.

Researchers note that although the survival rate for younger women with breast cancer has improved over the last two decades, their cancer treatments, despite their effectiveness, can seriously affect quality of life and other health outcomes.

In the study, researchers sought to determine the impact of cancer treatment on the quality of life of younger breast cancer survivors. Patricia A. Ganz, M.D., and colleagues reviewed studies that focused on overall quality of life, psychosocial effects, menopause and fertility-related concerns, and behavioral outcomes related to weight gain and physical activity.

The studies were published between January 1990 and July 2010. Of the 840 titles and abstracts reviewed, they focused on 28 with the most relevant data.

Investigators found that overall quality of life was compromised in younger breast cancer survivors, with the mental issues more severe than the physical problems.

Depression was also a problem as young women were also more depressed compared to the general age-matched population of women without cancer or women over 50 with breast cancer.

Premature menopause, infertility and menopause-related symptoms were more common and contributing factors to the level of distress in women 50 or younger after treatment.

Weight gain and physical inactivity were common health outcomes in younger women, although exercise rates generally increased after treatment.

Researchers believe the findings demonstrate the need for personalized treatment for breast cancer, especially among young women.

?By tailoring [treatment] and giving cytotoxic therapy only to those who may benefit, we can mitigate some of these side effects, but the long life expectancy for these younger women also provides a window of opportunity for cancer prevention and health promotion activities.?

Joe Paterno???s Coaching Career, by the Numbers (ContributorNetwork)

Former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno died Sunday, mere months after being fired following a child sex abuse scandal among his program's coaching staff. ABC News reports Paterno died due to complications of lung cancer at the age of 85.

Here's a look at Paterno's coaching career, by the numbers.

46: Years Paterno was the head coach at Penn State. Whereas many programs switch coaches often, Paterno's legacy of consistent winning kept his job security intact. Paterno was 8-1 in 2011 before he was fired.

5: Losing seasons Penn State had in Paterno's tenure. Four of those seasons came since 2000. During his first year in 1966 Paterno's team went 5-5. Every season from that point to 1987 had a nonlosing record.

5: Undefeated seasons Penn State had under Paterno. His first undefeated season was in 1968, his third year on the job. Penn State went 11-0 and won the Orange Bowl. A year later, he did the same thing.

37: Bowl games in which Paterno coached in his 46 years. From the 1971 season to the 1983 season, Penn State appeared in 13 straight bowl games, winning nine.

24: Bowl game victories for Paterno. The victory total and appearances in bowl games are NCAA records for coaching.

409: Wins for Paterno. He only had 136 losses and three ties. His .749 winning percentage is 31st all time.

7: Times Penn State made it to No. 1 in the Associated Press poll in Paterno's career during one season. The Nittany Lions finished their season on top of the AP poll twice, in 1982 and 1986.

19: Seasons Paterno coached Penn State as a member of the Big Ten conference. Until 1993, the football program played as an independent.

805: Wins all time in Penn State's football program, dating to 1889. Over half of those wins were earned by Paterno.

4 million: Dollars that Paterno and his wife donated back to the university. A library and spiritual center were named in his honor.

600,000: Dollars of Paterno's annual salary.

Bachmann speaks at St. Paul anti-abortion rally

(AP) ? Rep. Michele Bachmann predicted Sunday that the November elections will end abortion as she made her first public appearance in Minnesota since dropping out of the Republican presidential race.

Bachmann spoke to hundreds of people opposed to legal abortion who traveled on school buses from across the state Sunday to mark the 39th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, Minnesota Public Radio reported (http://bit.ly/zIPAwh ). The annual rally was sponsored by Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life, which said in a statement that the event drew more than 4,000 people.

Bachmann said the Supreme Court decision should be repealed within the next year.

"Here on our watch we will stand, we will stand for life, we will never forget, we will never give up, and next year we will gather in a day of celebration when we have finally ended abortion in this all important election," she said. "Join me this year. Choose life."

Bachmann has appeared at few public events in Minnesota in the past half-year, when her focus was on her GOP presidential campaign. She dropped out of the race after finishing sixth in Iowa's leadoff caucuses in early January.

She hasn't said if she'll run for a fourth term in Congress, representing suburbs north and east of the Twin Cities. In response to a question from a reporter, she said she'll give interviews soon on the subject.

Republican Reps. Erik Paulson, Chip Cravaack and John Kline also spoke at the event.

Planned Parenthood officials said they'll oppose any action that limits women's access to health care and legal abortion.

Myanmar holds new cease-fire talks with Kachin

(AP) ? Myanmar's government and ethnic Kachin rebels met Thursday for cease-fire talks to end several months of armed clashes near the northern border with China.

After two days of negotiations, a high-level government team and members of the Kachin Independence Organization agreed to continue talks later and in the meantime to inform the other side before deploying troops, according to an official at the talks who declined to be named.

The talks were the latest efforts by Myanmar's new, nominally civilian government to end the country's long-running ethnic conflicts, one of many reforms under way after years of military rule.

Stopping ethnic clashes is a key demand of Western governments that are weighing lifting sanctions imposed during the junta's rule. Last week, the government signed a cease-fire pact with Karen rebels in eastern Myanmar, in a major step toward ending one of the world's longest-running insurgencies. Other talks are reportedly taking place with the Shan, Karenni and Chin.

A prominent Kachin mediator, Rev. Saboi Jum, told The Associated Press that talks were held across the border in Ruili in China's Yunnan province.

The next round of negotiations would be held in Myanmar, according to the official who spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to disclose details of the talks.

The Kachin Independence Organization reached a peace deal with the country's former ruling junta in 1994, but the truce broke down in 2010 after the group rejected a call by the junta to transform its troops into border guards under the government's leadership.

The Kachin have been fighting the government since June, when the army tried to break up some of their militia strongholds. Thousands of ethnic Kachin have fled their homes to avoid the fighting.

Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has described an end to the fighting with ethnic guerrillas as a national priority, and last month said she would be willing to help with peace negotiations.

The Nobel laureate and former political prisoner sent a letter to the Kachin people expressing compassion, particularly for the women and children who have been uprooted by the fighting, said Saboi Jum.

She "expressed her hope that one day the effected population would be able to come home and live in peace," he said, saying that Suu Kyi's message "lifted our spirits and we are very happy."

Suu Kyi's enormous popularity with the poor and disenfranchised majority is expected to propel her to her first seat in parliament during April by-elections.

Summary Box: Europe debt auctions lift stocks (AP)

DEBT SALES: Auctions of short-term debt by Spain, Greece and Europe's bailout fund drew strong investor demand on Tuesday, despite recent credit rating downgrades by Standard & Poor's. Many had feared the downgrades would prevent them from obtaining funds and worsen the debt crisis.

CHINA GROWTH: The Chinese government said its economy slowed less dramatically in the fourth quarter than analysts had feared. Demand from China is key to sustaining the global economy.

MIXED EARNINGS: Stocks rose on the encouraging news from abroad, despite mixed earnings reports from big U.S. banks.

CTL refreshes 2go Classmate PC range with new convertible tablet, laptop models

It's been quite a while since we've seen a new Classmate PC from the folks at CTL, but the company's now back at CES with a pair of new models. Those include the 2go Classmate PC NL3 convertible tablet (above), and the 2go Classmate PC E12, which takes on a more traditional laptop form-factor. Both models pack a 10.1-inch screen (with the NL3 employing a resistive touchscreen to accommodate a stylus), and each boast some relatively similar specs across the board, including a 1.6GHz Atom N2600 processor, 1GB of RAM, and your choice of either a standard hard drive or SSD for storage -- plus the same ruggedness found on the company's earlier Classmate PCs. Look for both to be available early next month, with the NL3 starting at $499 and the E12 coming in at $349. Videos of each are after the break.
