The nations weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Thursday, December 29, 2011.

Active weather will continue across the northern tier of the nation on Thursday as a very active jet stream sends more disturbances across the North. A cold front extending through the Pacific Northwest and moist westerly flow will move through the Northern Intermountain West, bringing showers, periods of heavy rain, high elevation snowfall, and strong winds to parts of Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming Wednesday night through Thursday. Snow accumulations in the mountains are expected to range from about 10 to 20 inches, while snow totals of about 2 to 8 inches are expected in the lower valleys. Sustained winds of 25 to 45 mph with gusts to 60 mph may accompany precipitation in Montana and Wyoming. These conditions may create periods of blowing and drifting snow, reduced visibilities, slick roads, and ultimately hazardous road conditions for travelers. Precipitation from this system is expected to spread into the Dakotas and Nebraska Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, precipitation will continue in the Pacific Northwest through the day, before the next and last system in this series of storms arrives Thursday night into Friday. Expect wet and windy weather with locally heavy rainfall and significant snowfall above 3,500 feet to accompany this system.

In the Midwest, a clipper will slide across North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Lake Michigan with a mix of rain, freezing rain, and snow through the afternoon. Areas of snow will be possible in parts of North Dakota in the morning and in Michigan. Snowfall amounts from this system are not expected to be very impressive. Up to 1 to 2 inches will be possible in parts of northern Michigan.

In the East, a cold blustery day is expected in the Northeast on Thursday as cold air continues to surge in on brisk west winds. Precipitation in region should taper off as high pressure builds in Thursday. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday have ranged from a morning low of -13 degrees at Grand Marais Airport, Minn. to a high of 80 degrees at Ramona, Calif.

Chavez discusses America's hottest export: cancer ? RT

Hugo Chavez (AFP Photo / Juan Barreto)

America has troops on the ready outside North Korea, has spy drones stationed to enter Iran and has God knows how many other secrets up its sleeves. What else could the US be up to? If you ask Hugo Chavez, it?s cancer.

The creation and spreading of cancer over Latin American leaders.

That?s what Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Wednesday this week while addressing troops at a military base, a speech that was televised across the country. Speaking only a day after Argentina President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was diagnosed with the disease, Chavez suggested ? and he stressed, he only suggested ? that the toll of neighboring leaders diagnose with cancer seems almost too odd to be true. Chavez recently had a tumor removed from his pelvis and Fernandez and he join a list of Latin American figurehead with the disease that also includes Paraguay's Fernando Lugo, Brazil's Dilma Rousseff and former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

?It?s a bit difficult to explain this, to reason it, including using the law of probabilities,? said Chavez, who called the coincidence ?very, very, very strange.?

"It would not be strange if they had developed the technology to induce cancer and nobody knew about it until now ? I don't know. I'm just reflecting," said Chavez.

Speaking to the troops, the leftist leader and longtime opponent of American policy said that another Latin American leader, Fidel Castro, warned him years earlier of what the US is capable of. "Fidel always told me, 'Chavez take care. These people have developed technology. You are very careless. Take care what you eat, what they give you to eat ? a little needle and they inject you with I don't know what,?? insisted Chavez.

Not included on the checklist of Latin American leaders with cancer is Bolivian President Evo Morales, but Chavez warned him Wednesday that he could be next. Don?t worry, though. Chavez says he?s got his back.

"We'll have to take good care of Evo. Take care Evo!" said Venezuela?s president.

Also sparred ? so far ? is Ecuador?s Rafael Correa.

?Evo take care of yourself, Correa, be careful, we just don?t know,? added Chavez.

2012: Fear no supernova

ScienceDaily (Dec. 28, 2011) ? Given the incredible amounts of energy in a supernova explosion -- as much as the sun creates during its entire lifetime -- another erroneous doomsday theory is that such an explosion could happen in 2012 and harm life on Earth. However, given the vastness of space and the long times between supernovae, astronomers can say with certainty that there is no threatening star close enough to hurt Earth.

Astronomers estimate that, on average, about one or two supernovae explode each century in our galaxy. But for Earth's ozone layer to experience damage from a supernova, the blast must occur less than 50 light-years away. All of the nearby stars capable of going supernova are much farther than this.

Any planet with life on it near a star that goes supernova would indeed experience problems. X- and gamma-ray radiation from the supernova could damage the ozone layer, which protects us from harmful ultraviolet light in the sun's rays. The less ozone there is, the more UV light reaches the surface. At some wavelengths, just a 10 percent increase in ground-level UV can be lethal to some organisms, including phytoplankton near the ocean surface. Because these organisms form the basis of oxygen production on Earth and the marine food chain, any significant disruption to them could cascade into a planet-wide problem.

Another explosive event, called a gamma-ray burst (GRB), is often associated with supernovae. When a massive star collapses on itself -- or, less frequently, when two compact neutron stars collide -- the result is the birth of a black hole. As matter falls toward a nascent black hole, some of it becomes accelerated into a particle jet so powerful that it can drill its way completely through the star before the star's outermost layers even have begun to collapse. If one of the jets happens to be directed toward Earth, orbiting satellites detect a burst of highly energetic gamma rays somewhere in the sky. These bursts occur almost daily and are so powerful that they can be seen across billions of light-years.

A gamma-ray burst could affect Earth in much the same way as a supernova -- and at much greater distance -- but only if its jet is directly pointed our way. Astronomers estimate that a gamma-ray burst could affect Earth from up to 10,000 light-years away with each separated by about 15 million years, on average. So far, the closest burst on record, known as GRB 031203, was 1.3 billion light-years away.

As with impacts, our planet likely has already experienced such events over its long history, but there's no reason to expect a gamma-ray burst in our galaxy to occur in the near future, much less in December 2012.

Argentina adopts wide definition of terrorism (Reuters)

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) ? Argentina enacted a law on Wednesday providing a wide definition of terrorism that critics fear will allow the state to jail people for up to 15 years for activities as diverse as marching in protests or pulling money out of banks.

The law, approved by Congress last week, seeks to punish anyone who "terrorizes" the population, leaving the definition of the term open.

The government of recently re-elected President Cristina Fernandez says the measure is needed to meet anti-money-laundering standards set forth by the Financial Action Task Force, a multinational policy-making body.

Argentine anti-money-laundering chief Jose Sbatella said recently the measure sought to prevent "any group of economically powerful people from working in concert to wipe out the country's reserves or from terrorizing the population in a way that it induces them to withdraw all their deposits."

Legal experts in Argentina says the law's language leaves the definition of terrorism so open that local courts are sure to strike it down.

"The problem is in the ambiguity," constitutional lawyer Felix Lon told Reuters.

"It could refer to social protests or a headline published by a newspaper," he added. "A run on the banks could be considered terrorism."

Earlier this year, the government slapped controls on foreign currency purchases, widely seen as an effort to stem capital outflows.

Analysts criticized the measure as counter-productive, since it made many depositors nervous and thus more likely to seek safety in U.S. dollars.

In another policy widely criticized as heavy-handed, economists who publish inflation data at odds with the government's widely discredited monthly consumer price figures are fined by the Fernandez administration.

The president won re-election in October, promising to deepen the unorthodox policies that have made her popular among recipients of generous welfare spending. But business leaders complain about state intervention in the economy.

New Hampshire Primary Beckons GOP Candidates Jan. 10 (ContributorNetwork)

The Iowa caucus will help decide the 2012 GOP race for the presidential nominee. A week later, the primary election for New Hampshire is Jan. 10, one week after Iowans make their choice.

Here is some background information regarding the New Hampshire primary election.

History

The History Channel states New Hampshire first held a presidential primary in 1952. Primaries for choosing presidents often didn't come into popular use until the 1970s in the United States. New Hampshire was one of the first states to implement such an election for choosing presidents of the United States.

New Hampshire's official almanac states the first victor in the New Hampshire primary was Dwight D. Eisenhower. The former general was so popular, he never once campaigned in the state and won on reputation alone. He was elected president after Harry S. Truman left office.

Richard M. Nixon holds the records for most victories in the New Hampshire primary. From 1960 to 1972, he won three contests. In the 1960 race, there were only 15 states that held presidential primary elections.

Results

Every incumbent president who has run unopposed in New Hampshire has won a second term in office, going back to Eisenhower in 1956. More recently, New Hampshire has played a bigger role in national politics. In 2000, Democratic vice president Al Gore won with nearly 76,900 votes. Sen. John McCain of Arizona won the Republican side with 115,600 votes in a seeming landslide over George W. Bush. Bush came back later in the primary season to become the nominee and win the general election.

McCain won again 2008 after coming in a distant fourth place in the Iowa caucus. The New York Times noted the Arizona Republican garnered just 15,559 votes in Iowa and then picked up nearly six times as many in New Hampshire. Despite an early loss in Iowa, McCain went on to become the GOP nominee.

Current State of Affairs

In the 2008 primary, there were nearly 234,000 votes cast for GOP candidates. The ballot for the New Hampshire primary has 30 names on it as opposed to just seven mainstream candidates. Herman Cain is still listed despite suspending his campaign. Many of the names on the ballot are not known on a national level such as Michael J. Meehan from St. Louis and Christopher V. Hill from Prospect, Ky.

The Boston Globe reports Mitt Romney still holds a sizable lead over his competition. Independent voters may be the key in the presidential primary. Romney holds a slim lead with undeclared voters in New Hampshire in recent polls conducted by the Globe.

As the political clock counts down to the New Hampshire presidential primary, the election is still anyone's to win.

Japan probe finds nuclear disaster response failed (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan's response to the nuclear crisis that followed the March 11 tsunami was confused and riddled with problems, including an erroneous assumption an emergency cooling system was working and a delay in disclosing dangerous radiation leaks, a report revealed Monday.

The disturbing picture of harried and bumbling workers and government officials scrambling to respond to the problems at Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant was depicted in the report detailing a government investigation.

The 507-page interim report, compiled by interviewing more than 400 people, including utility workers and government officials, found authorities had grossly underestimated tsunami risks, assuming the highest wave would be 6 meters (20 feet). The tsunami hit at more than double those levels.

The report criticized the use of the term "soteigai," meaning "outside our imagination," which it said implied authorities were shirking responsibility for what had happened. It said by labeling the events as beyond what could have been expected, officials had invited public distrust.

"This accident has taught us an important lesson on how we must be ready for soteigai," it said.

The report, set to be finished by mid-2012, found workers at Tokyo Electric Power Co., the utility that ran Fukushima Dai-ichi, were untrained to handle emergencies like the power shutdown that struck when the tsunami destroyed backup generators ? setting off the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

There was no clear manual to follow, and the workers failed to communicate, not only with the government but also among themselves, it said.

Finding alternative ways to bring sorely needed water to the reactors was delayed for hours because of the mishandling of an emergency cooling system, the report said. Workers assumed the system was working, despite several warning signs it had failed and was sending the nuclear core into meltdown.

The report acknowledged that even if the system had kicked in properly, the tsunami damage may have been so great that meltdowns would have happened anyway.

But a better response might have reduced the core damage, radiation leaks and the hydrogen explosions that followed at two reactors and sent plumes of radiation into the air, according to the report.

Sadder still was how the government dallied in relaying information to the public, such as using evasive language to avoid admitting serious meltdowns at the reactors, the report said.

The government also delayed disclosure of radiation data in the area, unnecessarily exposing entire towns to radiation when they could have evacuated, the report found.

The government recommended changes so utilities will respond properly to serious accidents.

It recommended separating the nuclear regulators from the unit that promotes atomic energy, echoing frequent criticism since the disaster.

Japan's nuclear regulators were in the same ministry that promotes the industry, but they will be moved to the environment ministry next year to ensure more independence.

The report acknowledged people were still living in fear of radiation spewed into the air and water, as well as radiation in the food they eat. Thousands have been forced to evacuate and have suffered monetary damage from radiation contamination, it said.

"The nuclear disaster is far from over," the report said.

The earthquake and tsunami left 20,000 people dead or missing.

AT&T drops T-Mobile bid, Microsoft tries to nix antitrust case

AT&T has dropped its bid to take over T-Mobile USA for $39 billion in the wake of opposition from government regulators who say the deal would violate antitrust laws.

The move by AT&T -- announced Monday afternoon -- was a stunning outcome for the telecom giant that had sought to buy Bellevue-based T-Mobile USA -- an American subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom. AT&T had underestimated the opposition it would face from government regulators and from competitors who feared what would become of the highly competitive wireless industry if the merger went through. The deal would have created the nation's largest carrier.

AT&T's decision to scrap its merger plan leaves T-Mobile in limbo. T-Mobile USA?s parent, Deutsche Telekom, is getting $3 billion in cash by the end of the year. And T-Mobile USA will get what Deutsche Telekom calls a ?large package of advanced wireless solutions spectrum? and a seven-year national roaming agreement that will allow T-Mobile to bring faster service to Seattle and other big cities.

The deal gives T-Mobile more time to figure out its future, including upgrading its network and finding a new partner.

Microsoft says that Novell Inc. has insufficient evidence to reasonably support its antitrust lawsuit against the Redmond software giant now that a jury has failed to reach a verdict in the case.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has used the annual Consumer Electronics Show as a platform for CEO Steve Ballmer to showcase his company?s latest hardware and software offerings.

But times are changing, and apparently Ballmer and Microsoft no longer need the exposure from the big tech trade show that it has dominated in the past with presentations and exhibits. Microsoft will make the upcoming 2012 CES show its last because it is relying more heavily on its own marketing campaigns and retail stores to reach its customers.

Here are a few things I am catching up on this week:

The Seattle Mariners are valued at $641 million, according to a Seattle divorce trial judge handling the case of Mariners minority owner Chris Larson, who made his fortune as a programmer at Microsoft

The Seattle Times reports that based on the $593 million sale of the Texas Rangers and $610 million sale of the Houston Astros this year, King Count Superior Court Judge William Downing estimated the Mariners were worth $641 million, considerably higher than the $449 million estimate by Forbes earlier this year.

Amazon?s Lovefilm division and Sony Pictures Television inked a content arrangement giving Lovefilm members in the UK exclusive streaming access to new and upcoming Sony Pictures titles like "The Social Network? and ?Salt.?

The deal between Lovefilm and Sony is the latest in a series of content deals in the UK. Others involve Warner Bros., Entertainment One, STUDIOCANAL, Disney, Momentum and Lionsgate.

Canada?s First High-Ranking Delegation Visits Kurdistan

The visiting Canadian officials Encouraged to Strengthen Political and Economic Relations With Kurdistan Region

Canada?s new Ambassador to Iraq and Jordan, ?Mark Gwozdecky, marked the first Canadian official to visit the Kurdistan Region of Iraq(KRG) ?late last week where ?he was received by ?the Kurdistan Region?s leadership, including ?Kurdistan President, Masoud Barzani, according to a press release published on KRG website.

The Canadian Ambassador said that many of his colleagues have spoken ?very highly of the progress and development in Kurdistan, and ?added that he was glad to be able to witness these developments firsthand. ? ?The KRG statement mentioned. ??I am very happy to hear you are getting on with the business of developing your region notwithstanding the problems around you, moving ahead to make life better for your people. That?s what the people want and that?s what they deserve after all those years of instability and sometimes misery.? ?The Canadian official said.

The Canadian Government warns ?Canadians against all travel?to Iraq, ?except for the areas administered by the Kurdistan Regional Government (the provinces of Dahuk, Erbil, and Sulaymaniyah). Except for those in the Kurdistan region, Canadians currently in Iraq should leave,? ?according to the Canadian Foreign Affairs Ministry website?s ?Warning and Recommendations.??

The Canadian high-ranking officials visit to Kurdistan Region?aimed to? discuss ?potential areas of cooperation in both the public and private sectors.? ?Kurdish statement said. The Canadian Ambassador also spoke of the large Kurdish communities that reside in Canada, many of whom fled the hardships that they had to endure under the previous regime. He added that these communities will play an important role in helping establish stronger relations between Canada and the Kurdistan Region.

The Kurdistan Region President on behalf?of the Kurdish people conveyed thanks via the Ambassador for ?Canada?s support and assistance to the Kurdish people? ?during the now defunct ?regime of Iraq, and hoped that Kurdistan and Canada can develop relations that ?based on mutual understanding and interests.?

There are some Canadian companies that are already active in the Kurdistan Region, mainly in the oil and gas sector. However, Canada has kept its distance from Iraq and Kurdistan Region since the 2003 US-led?invasion?of Iraq which toppled the former Iraqi dictator. ?In March 2004 post-war Iraq, when the ?former Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister?had a plan to discuss Canadian Policy with Canadian-ethnic communities, Kurdish community?Representative?of Vancouver,?Aram Azez,?suggested?establishing Canada-Kurdistan relation committees that would?strengthen bilateral relations, based on common interests and values in political,?economic and cultural ties between Canada and Kurdistan Region.??However, then Liberal?Government?of Canada?s foreign minister didn?t show ?interest in?establishing relationships with the Kurdish region or Iraq at all.

Kurdistan Minister of Foreign Relations,?Falah Mustafa, ?also ?encouraged the ?Canadian ?Ambassador ?and the?delegation?accompanied him?to consider establishing a representative office in Kurdistan to join the other 23 diplomatic and foreign representations already present in Kurdistan. The?Canada?delegation was included the ?Ambassador?Deputy Head of Mission Mr Yves Duval, and the Embassy?s senior Trade Commissioner Mr John Ormond, according to KRG statement.

EC antitrust officials not swayed by NYSE-Deutsche Boerse (Reuters)

FRANKFURT/NEW YORK (Reuters) ? European Commission antitrust officials on Wednesday showed no sign of being swayed by Deutsche Boerse and NYSE Euronext's last-ditch arguments to save their $9 billion deal, sources said, making it increasingly likely the exchange operators will have to take their campaign directly to the commissioners.

A meeting with members of the EC antitrust case team was factual and cordial, two people familiar with the meeting said, but executives and regulatory officials appeared to remain at loggerheads over their views about the derivatives market.

Deutsche Boerse and NYSE Euronext will now likely center their lobbying efforts on bypassing the views of the antitrust case team, to focus on antitrust commissioner Joaquin Almunia himself, or on the so-called college of 27 commissioners, these people said.

The exchanges are likely to make a case for why their deal to create a pan-European exchange operator -- and the world's largest -- would be good for the European Union at a time when the continent is dealing with a deep crisis.

"There are big stakes for Europe here at a time when Europe's problems are front and center but no one is paying attention to this deal," one of the sources said.

The latest meeting between executives and regulators follows weeks of terse negotiations during which European Union staff made clear their reservations about approving a combination of Deutsche Boerse's Eurex and NYSE Euronext's Liffe on concerns the merged entity will have a monopoly over European listed derivatives trading.

Both Boerse and NYSE Euronext have said they will not pursue the merger if they are asked to divest either Eurex or Liffe. A formal decision by the European Commission is not expected until January or early February.

The exchanges have argued their control over the derivatives segment is much lower if the vast over-the-counter (OTC) market is included in the assessment of the global derivatives market.

But their merger plans were dealt a blow when the European Union decided to exclude OTC derivatives from its review of the merger.

In a bid to assuage regulatory concerns, Deutsche Boerse and NYSE Euronext this week offered to cap fees on trading in their European derivatives contracts for three years, and to sell the entire single stock equity derivatives business of NYSE Euronext's Liffe unit.

The latest offer came after a first set of concessions made in November failed to address the European Commission's competition concerns while opponents have criticised the second batch of proposals offered last week as only incremental adjustments.

Deutsche Boerse and NYSE declined to comment. Antitrust officials could not be reached for comment late on Wednesday.

Terry Reed, that man on President St.

Terry Reed asks me to remove the cash-filled cardboard coffee cup from the split-hook prosthetic claw that serves as his right hand. "Just put it in my coat pocket, please," he says, as breezes from the brisk traffic along President Street add some wind chill to the dropping temperature.

President Street is where Terry Reed does most of his panhandling, and he's hard to miss ? a thin man who stands on the solid white line that marks the left-turn lane. He wears a dark blue winter coat and a pair of pants that stop at his knees, revealing chocolate-colored prosthetic limbs below that. The first time you see him, you might be given to muttering, "Lord, have mercy."

It's a little after 8 o'clock on Saturday night, and the downtown streets are filled with families and young couples, many of them in festive outfits, coming from or going to holiday events at the Inner Harbor and at Market Place. Mr. Reed has been panhandling at the busy intersection of President and Lombard; his cup is full of bills. As requested, I slip it into his coat pocket.
"Are you hungry?" I ask.

"Yes," he says, and he suddenly seems eager to get something to eat. "I'll tell you my story," he says, and we cross Lombard Street against traffic and walk to Market Place.

Mr. Reed says he was born in 1965 without legs below his knees, and without forearms. His right arm has an elbow, his left does not.

He wears prosthetic equipment that looks outdated ? lower legs encased in brownish plastic once meant to match Mr. Reed's skin tone, with Nike running shoes on the feet, and a brace of metal and leather for his thighs. The forearms are of wood-grained plastic and metal. On this night, Mr. Reed has removed the prosthesis from his left arm; it dangles on a strap. He grimaces and mentions pain in the shoulder above it.

At the Subway in Market Place, I order him a foot-long sub, and he asks for the strangest combination I'd ever heard of: "Meatball with tuna, with mayonnaise." The Subway sandwich-builder obliges with five scoops of tuna salad, then a layer of meatballs and sauce, four slices of provolone, and a long, generous squirt of mayonnaise.

"Could I have two double chocolate cookies, too?" Mr. Reed asks.

We sit down. He asks me to unwrap the sub and place half of it on its wrapping near the edge of the table. Mr. Reed adjusts the angle of the sub with the split hook on his right hand, then leans down and eats the sub off the table, devouring it in just a few minutes. He then asks me to unwrap the second half.

"I'm hungrier than I thought," he says.

I buy him a cup of sweet ice tea.

"A motel on North Avenue," Mr. Reed says when I ask where he lives. "And sometimes I stay in a house where they charge $50 a night."

Mr. Reed says he lived with his mother, whom he described as a "chronic alcoholic," until her death 10 years ago. After that, he says, he was on his own, and apparently became estranged from five of his six older siblings. He has his mail delivered to a sister's house in West Baltimore.

Mr. Reed says he receives about $900 a month from a federal disability benefit. That's half of what he needs to keep from being homeless. So he panhandles on President Street to pay for housing and for food. He's out there, he says, "every day that I have the strength."

He also presumably needs money for his heroin habit. Mr. Reed says he uses the drug, but, at 46, would like to stop. "I was clean for a while once," he says. "I would like to get clean again."

I give him a little advice: Go to Health Care for The Homeless (HCH), just a few blocks away on the Fallsway. They have a Housing First program, and the whole idea is to get people like Terry Reed off the street so they have a place to stay while they deal with other problems. It's the opposite of the "housing ready" approach that requires people to be in treatment before getting a place to live. Housing First is proving to be far more successful at getting people out of the cycle of homelessness, according to HCH.

Mr. Reed will likely fail if he tries to get clean while hustling every day for hotel and heroin money.

He grimaces again as we speak. It's the pain in his left shoulder.

"I have an abscess there the size of a tennis ball," he says, and he suggests the infection came from a needle. "I'm going to the hospital tonight."

He finishes eating, then we step outside. Market Place is full of young men and women heading to night clubs and parents and children heading home from holiday events. I put Mr. Reed in a cab and send him off.

By Sunday afternoon, he's in an operating room at Union Memorial Hospital. I stop by and see him on Monday, and he seems to be doing a lot better; he's in good spirits as he heals from the infection.

"I told you I'd get to the hospital," he says.

"You did the right thing," I add.

Mr. Reed asks me to slide a piece of chocolate cake across a bed tray so he can lean forward and eat it. "And can you please get me my Bible?" he asks, nodding toward the shelf along the window in his room. I find a paperback edition of the King James Bible there, dog-eared and crinkly from having been wet. It's among Terry Reed's few possessions. I position the Bible against the bed tray as my visit ends. I tell him I'll look into housing and maybe an electric-powered wheelchair. I'll make some calls.

I'll let you know how this turns out.

Official: 3 die in north Nigeria school attack (AP)

KWA, Nigeria ? An official says assailants have shot dead three officers after attacking a boarding school in northern Nigeria.

Air Commodore Sani Ahmed told journalists Friday that a fourth officer sustained bullet wounds during Thursday night's attack.

The gunmen targeted a school near the northern city of Kano that is run by military officers. The attackers did not enter the hostel housing more than 100 pupils.

Authorities are treating the case as an armed robbery because some items were stolen, Ahmed said without elaborating.

Residents, though, fear it could have been a Boko Haram attack. The feared radical sect is responsible for a series of attacks that have targeted security officers in northern Nigeria.

Gingrich says rivals' criticism taking a toll (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Newt Gingrich tried to quiet unrelenting campaign criticism that he acknowledged had taken a toll as Mitt Romney stepped up insider attacks Saturday in hopes of regaining front-runner status with the first presidential vote little more than two weeks away.

Gingrich, the former House speaker enjoying a late surge in the polls, pledged to correct what he said were his rivals' inaccurate claims about him. Romney, the ex-Massachusetts governor looking for a rebound, portrayed Gingrich as a well-heeled lobbyist since his service in Congress and predicted that conservative voters will reject Gingrich as they learn more about his lengthy Washington record.

"I'm going to let the lawyers decide what is and what is not lobbying, but when it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, typically it's a duck," Romney said.

With the Iowa caucuses Jan. 3 up for grabs, most candidates are redoubling their efforts heading into the holidays, when voters generally tune out the race.

Gingrich is their prime target. Last week alone, anti-Gingrich ads from a Romney ally outspent Gingrich by an 8-to-1 margin on television.

Gingrich cited "the extraordinary negativity of the campaign" during a call from Washington with Iowa supporters. He said he was inclined to hold teleconferences every few days so people can discuss ideas and his campaign can "encourage them to raise any of these things that you get in the mail that are junk and dishonest."

"I'll be glad to personally answer, so you're hearing it from my very own lips," he said in the forum. "We don't have our advertising versus their advertising, but you get to ask me directly."

Romney campaigned in early-voting South Carolina, where tea party activists have given Gingrich a strong lead in polls. Romney told reporters that many voters now are just beginning to pay attention to the race and will turn on Gingrich after they learn about his time in Washington and his role with mortgage company Freddie Mac, a quasi-government agency.

Gingrich's consulting firm collected $1.6 million from the company. Gingrich insists he did not lobby for them and only provided advice.

"I think as tea partyers concentrate on that, for instance, they'll say, `Wow, this really isn't the guy that would represent our views,'" Romney said after a town hall meeting with South Carolina Rep. Tim Scott. "Many tea party folks, I believe, are going to find me to be the ideal candidate."

Gingrich said the attacks on his record have been brutal, but he insisted they are exaggerated.

"I just want to set the record straight," Gingrich told his Iowa backers. "We were paid annually for six years, so the numbers you see are six years of work. Most of that money went to pay overhead ? for staff, for other things. It didn't go directly to me. It went to the company that provided consulting advice."

It's a distinction without a difference, his rivals have said. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann continued to criticize his tenure as a consultant and Texas Rep. Ron Paul continued an ad accusing him of "serial hypocrisy" for taking Freddie Mac's checks.

During a Friday appearance on Jay Leno's late-night television show, Paul also turned on Bachmann.

"She doesn't like Muslim. She hates them," said Paul, who routinely clashes with his rivals over foreign policy. "She wants to go get them."

Bachmann told reporters in Estherville that was not true.

"I don't hate Muslims. I love the American people," she said. "As president of the United States, my goal will be to keep America safe, free and sovereign."

Texas Gov. Rick Perry rumbled through rural Iowa on a bus tour. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum stuck to a plan that has won him the honor of spending the most time in the state, yet has not yet translated into support in polls.

Iowa's largest newspaper, The Des Moines Register, announced it would publish its presidential endorsement in Sunday editions. In 2008, the paper backed Sen. John McCain, the eventual GOP nominee who came up short in Iowa's caucuses.

Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who early on decided against competing in Iowa, was campaigning in New Hampshire. Huntsman, who also served as President Barack Obama's ambassador to China, has kept his focus on New Hampshire, where independent voters are the largest bloc and can vote in either party's primary.

As the Iowa vote neared, Gingrich's decision to take the weekend off from campaigning raised eyebrows given his rivals' busy schedules. Gingrich called the decision "pacing."

Gingrich has prided himself on a nontraditional campaign, but his advantages in the polls could shift if the only exposure to Gingrich comes through rivals' negative ads.

Gingrich's campaign manager noted the onslaught in a fundraising pitch to donors.

"With Newt's opponents spending $9 million on attack ads in Iowa, we need to quickly ramp up our messaging," Michael Krull said Saturday.

Anti-Gingrich ads, courtesy of Romney allies, dominate in Iowa. The Restore Our Future political action committee on Friday spent an additional $1 million on airtime, and broadcast almost $790,000 in commercials against Gingrich last week alone. Gingrich, by comparison, spent roughly 100,000 on broadcast and cable ads.

That looked to continue into the final week before the Christmas holiday.

Romney, who has kept Iowa at arm's length after investing heavily here four years ago only to come up short. His advisers note they have kept in touch with supporters of his 2008 campaign that came in second place in Iowa.

The week's buzz: We aren't the median

Brandon Thibodeaux for msnbc.com

Megan and Sam Moss, pictured here with their baby daughter Mary Margaret, are living on the nation's median household income of around $50,000 a year.

By Allison Linn

?

For the last couple of weeks, Life Inc. has been exploring what it?s like to be in the exact midpoint of the nation?s economic spectrum.

The We are the median project prompted thousands of readers to share their stories and thoughts on what it?s like for to live on the nation?s household median income of around $50,000 a year. And it also prompted lots of you to tell us about what it?s like to be much worse off.

Many readers told us they can only hope to bring home $50,000 a year.

?$50,000 would be great to make a year. Single mom with 2 kids and I bring home less than $35,000. Took a cut in hours to keep my job,? one reader wrote in response to our profile of a mom and son who are struggling with a drop in income.

Another profile, of a young couple bringing home around $50,000 a year and juggling high student loan bills, also prompted some to tell us that people need to pay more attention to those who have it much worse.

?Why is this news? We make less than $27K, I have over $80K in student debt. My dream is a nightmare and we are family of 4,? one reader wrote.

Although some readers told us?they are doing just fine?on incomes below $50,000 a year, others said it?s very hard to make ends meet on a lower income. In a post this week about a family choosing to live a very simple life on about $20,000 a year, many readers questioned whether low-income living is really ?living well.??

But some found the story inspirational.

?It's gratifying to hear stories of real people. I applaud this young family and see their lot improving, over time. My husband and I struggled in our early life, with young children and little money. ? Our kids are not scarred because of this, they are all hard working, successful contributors to society. We have always had to be smart about our money and now that we have more, we are still frugal,? one commenter wrote.

Apparently that?s not a lesson many parents are passing on to their children. In a post about a young couple getting a good financial start in life, about 40 percent of our readers said they hadn't learned much from their parents about how to manage money.

?My parents didn't tell me anything about budgeting. It's a hard lesson I now know and am passing this on to my kids,? one reader wrote.

How much would you have to bring home to be free of money worries? More than half of our readers said they would have to make $250,000 or more per year in order to feel rich.

For some, the more money, the better.

?As much as possible. You're never secure in this country unless you are the 1%,? one reader wrote.

Still, some readers said they would settle for much less.

?I would be thrilled with that (to me) mythical $50,000 per year..........!? one reader wrote.

What's the minimum annual income your household could live on?

Trapped workers rescued from Idaho mine

By msnbc.com and news services

Updated at 3:25 a.m. ET

MULLAN, Idaho - Seven miners who were trapped underground in a northern Idaho silver mine were rescued late on Wednesday.

NBC News?station KHQ reported that all 20 miners were safe, and that the the most serious injury was a broken leg. The seven miners who had been trapped were transported by air and ambulance to local hospitals, the Spokesman-Review reported.

The Shoshone County sheriff's office received a report that miners had been trapped at 7:51 p.m. (10:51 p.m. ET), Capt. Holly Lindsey said according to the Spokesman-Review.

Melanie Hennessy, a spokeswoman for the Hecla Mining Co., which owns the mine, said the miners had been trapped 5,900 feet underground.

Two Lucky Friday miners have died in separate instances this year.

A roof collapse in a tunnel more than a mile underground trapped a 53-year-old silver miner in April. Crews recovered Larry Marek's body nine days later.

Last month, miner Brandon Gray was buried in rubble after trying to dislodge a jammed rock bin. He died from his injuries two days later.

Shortly after Gray's death, Mine Safety and Health Administration regulators criticized Hecla for safety failures that led to Marek's death. The mine received four citations and faces nearly $1 million in penalties, the Spokesman-Review of Spokane, Wash., reported.

The investigation report cited Lucky Friday management for failing to install adequate ground support systems and neglecting to test the stability of the area where the collapse that killed Marek occurred.

The mine is currently undergoing a $200 million project to deepen it nearly 9,000 feet to increase access to deeper silver deposits. Hecla officials expect the project to be completed by 2014.

This is a breaking news story. Please check again for more updates.

Online game maker Zynga prices IPO at $10 a share

NEW YORK (AP) ? Zynga is poised to harvest some cold hard cash in its initial public offering. Who knew that selling virtual cows and digital corn on Facebook would create a $7 billion company?

The online game developer best known for "FarmVille" priced its initial public offering late Thursday at $10 per share.

That's at the top of its expected range of $8.50 to $10, a sign that investors are eager to get a piece of the latest in a series of high-profile tech IPOs this year. Zynga is selling 100 million shares and giving its underwriters the right to buy another 15 million shares. The company stands to raise slightly more than $1 billion from the offering, before subtracting for expenses.

Thursday's pricing gives San Francisco-based Zynga a market value of about $7 billion.

Zynga will begin trading Friday on the Nasdaq Stock Market under the ticker symbol "ZNGA." That's when "Main Street" investors will get a chance to buy the stock. The offering rounds out a busy week for IPOs, the likes of which the market hasn't seen since before the 2008 financial meltdown.

Founded in 2007 and named after CEO Mark Pincus' dog, Zynga Inc. follows online deals site Groupon Inc. and professional network LinkedIn Corp. in going public. A bevy of smaller Internet startups, such as reviews site Angie's List Inc. and Pandora Media Inc., have also taken the plunge. They're the soup, salad and appetizer to the main course: Facebook's public debut, expected sometime after April. The social network could rake in as much as $10 billion.

Pincus and Zynga's 2,300 employees have built a business charging small amounts of money ? a few cents, sometimes a couple of dollars ? for virtual items in online games. The games themselves free to play. These items range from crops in "Farmville" to buildings in "CityVille," its most popular Facebook game. This so-called "free-to-play" business model assumes that most people won't want to pay anything to build virtual castles in "CastleVille" or take down rival mob bosses in "Mafia Wars."

But with a large enough player base and a few loyal spenders, Zynga was able to earn a net income of $90.6 million in 2010. Though not unheard of, it's unusual for a tech startup to turn a profit before going public.

Zynga has been criticized for being too dependent on Facebook and its 800 million users. Facebook takes 30 percent cut from what people spend on outside applications through its site. In the July-September period, 93 percent of Zynga's revenue was generated through the world's largest online social network.

That said, there's no denying that Facebook's vast user base and widespread popularity are directly responsible for Zynga's meteoric rise. As of Thursday, Zynga's games had more than 223 million monthly users on Facebook. If those gamers could form their own nation, its population would be roughly on par with Indonesia and Brazil.

Zynga's growth has also been helped by the simple fact that its games are addictive. Just last week, actor Alec Baldwin got booted off a plane because he wouldn't stop playing "Words With Friends," Zynga's Scrabble-inspired mobile phone game. Zynga is focusing on mobile gaming as a way to expand beyond Facebook.

Baldwin's flight fiasco offers proof that mobile games present the biggest growth opportunity for Zynga, according to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter. International expansion and getting people who already play Zynga games to spend money are other ways the company can grow.

Zynga is not without rivals. Its main competitor on Facebook is Electronic Arts Inc., the more old-school video game publisher best known for console games such as "Madden" and "The Sims." Recently, EA has been focusing on its mobile and online business. Its Facebook version of "The Sims" has created a healthy rivalry with Zynga.

Though not a direct competitor, another similar company is Japan's Nexon Co., which went public on the Tokyo Stock Exchange this week, raising $1.2 billion. Originally from South Korea, Nexon pioneered the free-to-play revenue model that has led to Zynga's success. But where Zynga caters to the Facebooked masses, Nexon's focus is on more complicated games that can take hours, not minutes to crack. Valued at $7.2 billion after Wedneday's IPO, Nexon has about 77 million monthly active users.

Owen Mahoney, chief financial officer of Nexon and a former EA executive, believes several trends are contributing to the popularity of gaming companies like Nexon and Zynga. Namely, higher broadband Internet speeds are making it easier to download games; consumers are looking to try before they buy; and they are spending money in smaller amounts per purchase ? not unlike when music fans began buying individual digital songs, as opposed to entire albums.

"The same forces that affected the entertainment business are affecting the video game business," Mahoney said.

Not everyone is big on Zynga, though. "FarmVille" and its ilk annoy some Facebook users who get tired of their crop-harvesting friends asking for help with their virtual farms.

There are naysayers on Wall Street too. Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia took the unusual step of putting an "Underperform" rating on Zynga this week, days before the company was scheduled to go public. The analyst set a price target of $7 for Zynga's yet-to-be traded stock, below even the low end of its expected IPO pricing range, citing concerns about the company's growth rate. Bhatia said he wanted to provide an "independent view" of Zynga at a time when its bankers and the company will be selling the deal to clients.

"It's not to say the stock can't do well initially," he said.

Wedbush's Pachter, meanwhile, said it's "really premature" to call the death of a four-year-old industry.

"No one has enough data to say growth is stalled," he said.

A slew of popular apps suddenly are 10 cents in the Android Market

Minecraft for 10 cents

Something interesting is going on in the Android Market this morning. A bunch of our favorite apps are suddenly going for a dime, with no real rhyme or reason for the discount. @dirkyd3rlc and @Pat_Huey on Twitter alerted us to SwiftKey and Minecraft on sale for 10 cents, and we've found others. (Update: And in the UK, the apps are going for 10p each, not 6p, which would be converted from 10 cents U.S. We definitely smell a trend here.)

Here's the list as it stands.

There may be others. (Sing out in the comments if you spot any.) Can't tell if this is a glitch (which seems a tad unlikely), or some sort of coordinated effort. Regardless, might as well take advantage.
